Makoto Narumi (鳴海 真琴, Narumi Makoto) is a supporting character in the anime and manga series Seraph of the End (Owari no Seraph). A squad leader and sergeant of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, Narumi plays a significant role in the second half of the Seraph of the End: Battle in Nagoya arc. Tasked with exterminating high-ranking vampires, Narumi leads his squad alongside Shinoa Hīragi’s in a critical mission to target and destroy vampire nobles, including Lucal Wesker, the fifteenth progenitor.
Appearance
Appearance in Manga
Narumi is a tall, well-built man with long brown hair, which he ties back into a ponytail. His bangs frame his face and reach down to his jawline, and he has a beauty mark under the outer corner of his right eye. Narumi’s brown eyes are accentuated by heavy upper eyelids, giving him a distinctive appearance.
He wears the standard uniform of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army (JIDA), consisting of a long-sleeved black coat with light green details, including shoulder epaulettes. His uniform also features a brown Sam Browne belt with an additional strap crossing over his chest in an X shape. The coat has two rows of gold buttons on the front, and Narumi rolls up his sleeves for a more practical, slightly relaxed look. To complete his attire, he wears white gloves, a white web belt with a gold waist-plate, and black boots that fit over the leggings of his uniform trousers.
Personality
Narumi has a serious and no-nonsense attitude, especially when it comes to his responsibilities as a leader. He is not afraid to voice his concerns, often speaking his mind without waiting for permission, and his stern demeanor can occasionally turn hostile. For example, he once pushed his commanding officer, Shinya, against a fence in frustration over the state of their mission. Despite his tough exterior, Narumi is also capable of breaking from this seriousness, especially when the mission is a success. He is genuinely pleased when the squad completes a mission with no casualties, though his celebration can sometimes come off as insensitive, particularly when he tries to lighten the mood for Aihara, who was grieving the loss of her own squad members. Narumi’s confidence sometimes leads him to boast about his own leadership skills, treating those he respects as equals and others with a more dismissive attitude.
Narumi is also a man who, when faced with emotional distress or the death of comrades, remains calm and collected. Despite the death of two of his team members, he was able to comfort Rika and express his sense of responsibility by saying that Shinoa’s blood should be on his hands. However, Narumi is not afraid to act on his own whims, even if it means stepping outside the chain of command. He has suggested drastic actions like shooting hostages to spare them from torture and abandoned a mission on his own. He also intervened to prevent corporal punishment against Shinoa, as he felt a sense of duty to protect his squad.
When confused or frustrated, Narumi often raises his voice and makes assumptions. He is quick to react, as seen when he questioned whether the purpose of their mission was to die, and he was willing to defy orders without hesitation. Despite his occasional emotional outbursts, Narumi understands the harsh reality of their world and aims to do what he believes is best for his squad. His leadership is driven by the desire to keep as many people alive as possible, and while he can be haughty and emotional, he still gives credit where it’s due. Narumi’s emotions and strong convictions often lead him to take drastic measures, such as when he attacked Lieutenant General Kureto of the Demon Army.
Role in the Story
Narumi leads his squad as part of the one hundred Moon Demon Company soldier mission to eliminate vampire nobles in the city of Nagoya. Collaborating with Shinoa’s squad, Narumi plays a critical role in the strategy to target Lucal Wesker, the fifteenth progenitor.
Narumi and his team work alongside Shinoa’s squad to confront and defeat Lucal Wesker. Their combined efforts showcase their teamwork and determination to overcome the superior strength of the vampire nobles.
Throughout the mission, Narumi acts as a stabilizing force, offering guidance and support to Shinoa’s squad while maintaining focus on the larger objectives of the mission.
Powers and Abilities
Narumi’s Genbushin ability is a specialized skill unique to him as a member of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. It allows him to manifest a powerful fighting spirit or “mind’s eye” that enhances his combat abilities. This technique allows him to enhance his perception and mental acuity, making him faster and more efficient in battle. By tapping into this heightened state, Narumi can perceive the movements of his opponents more clearly, allowing him to anticipate attacks and react with increased speed.
Additionally, the Genbushin ability improves his reflexes, making him capable of executing swift and precise strikes that would otherwise be impossible for a typical soldier. His physical strength is also amplified while using this ability, allowing him to engage in battles with formidable foes, including vampires and demons, more effectively. This heightened sense of awareness and power gives Narumi a significant advantage in combat situations, although it also puts a heavy strain on his mental and physical state, as maintaining such a state requires intense focus and energy.
Narumi has honed the Genbushin ability over time, making him a formidable force on the battlefield, especially when coordinating with his team or executing critical maneuvers. His skill with this power is a testament to his leadership and combat proficiency, allowing him to lead his squad through dangerous missions and difficult confrontations.
