Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Makima

Makima (マキマ) serves as the primary antagonist throughout the Public Safety Saga. Occupying the role of the Chief Cabinet Secretary’s Personal Devil Hunter, she took Denji under her wing, treating him as her human pet.

As the narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that Makima is actually the Control Devil (支し配はいの悪あく魔ま Shihai no Akuma), a powerful entity that embodies the fear associated with control and domination. She is also recognized as one of the Four Horsemen, a significant group within the devil hierarchy. After her demise, Makima is reincarnated as Nayuta, marking a notable shift in her character’s journey.

Power is a delicate dance, isn’t it? Most people believe it’s about strength, but true power lies in control—the ability to bend others to your will without them even realizing it. I have my own vision for this world, and I’ll shape it however I see fit. If you want to stand in my way, that’s your choice. But remember, I always get what I want in the end. So, tell me, do you really understand the consequences of defiance?

Makima’s full apperance in human form.

Makima appears as a strikingly youthful woman in her twenties, possessing a slender physique and standing at an above-average height. Her hair is long and light red, almost bordering on pale auburn, typically styled in a casual braid. She has bangs that graze her eyebrows, complemented by longer side strands that elegantly frame her face. The most notable feature of her appearance is her eyes; they are a mesmerizing yellow, adorned with multiple red rings, providing a hint of her otherworldly essence.

In her role as a Public Safety Devil Hunter, Makima opts for a refined yet professional outfit, consisting of a fitted white long-sleeved blouse and a sleek black tie. She pairs this with tailored black trousers and polished brown shoes, exuding authority and confidence. In earlier story arcs, she often adds a long black trench coat to her ensemble, which dramatically cloaks her figure, leaving only her tie visible and enhancing the air of mystery that surrounds her.

Personality

Makima presents herself as a warm, approachable woman, often adorned with a serene smile that belies the chaos around her. Her demeanor is relaxed and composed, even in the most challenging situations, and she communicates with her colleagues in a professional and reassuring tone. Despite her human-like appearance, she cleverly conceals her true identity as a Devil, maintaining the guise of a mere human with a contract to a Devil rather than revealing her actual nature. This polished exterior serves as a mask to pursue her ultimate ambitions.

However, beneath this facade lies a Machiavellian strategist who views those around her as mere pawns—”dogs” to be commanded and manipulated at will. Following Aki Hayakawa’s death, her interactions with Denji begin to peel back the layers of her character, revealing her true self. Makima is exceptionally cunning and ruthless, employing threats of annihilation alongside promises of affection to maintain control over Denji. Her cold, calculating nature allows her to prioritize her goals above the welfare of others, disregarding the very lives she is meant to safeguard.

Acknowledging her own moral ambiguity, Makima regards herself as a “necessary evil,” functioning as a weapon for the Japanese government, similar to how the Gun Devil serves American interests. Unfazed by potential setbacks, she adapts her plans with a chilling pragmatism, often achieving her desires regardless of the outcomes.

An avid admirer of Chainsaw Man, whom she refers to as the “Hero of Hell,” Makima is captivated by his unique ability to consume and obliterate Devils. Her ultimate ambition is to bring him under her control to construct a world devoid of fear, death, and subpar cinema. Interestingly, she holds no aversion to failure, viewing the prospect of being devoured by Chainsaw Man as a noble end.

At her core, however, Makima harbors a longing for connection and companionship, particularly with Pochita. Her true desire is to forge a genuine bond and experience a familial love that has eluded her throughout her existence as the Control Devil, leaving her incapable of forming deep, meaningful relationships.

Relationships

Pochita
Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, stands out as the singular figure towards whom Makima exhibits genuine interest and affection. Unlike others, she does not perceive Pochita as inferior; rather, she reveres him for his legendary prowess and status. Her admiration runs so deep that she meticulously crafted a strategy to sever the bond between Pochita and Denji. This involved systematically undermining Denji’s spirit, aiming to drive him away from his aspirations and ultimately force him to relinquish his contract with Pochita. Makima harbored the intention of defeating Chainsaw Man to exert dominance over him, yet paradoxically, she accepted the possibility of being devoured by Pochita as a noble outcome, viewing it as a mark of honor.

Denji
At first glance, Makima appears benevolent towards Denji, offering him a position as a Devil Hunter and allowing him to reside with Aki and Power, fostering a sense of familial camaraderie. She seems to indulge Denji’s desires and aspirations, crafting an illusion of freedom and happiness. However, this kindness is a mere ruse, a carefully orchestrated facade designed to lead Denji into a state of despair. Her ultimate goal is to dismantle the bond between him and Pochita, thereby regaining control over Denji’s body. Throughout their interactions, Makima displays no genuine affection for Denji, as evidenced by her inability to remember his scent—an indication of her complete emotional detachment.

Aki Hayakawa
Makima projects an image of respect towards Aki, recognizing his skills and placing him in charge of Denji and Power. She appears to trust him implicitly, assigning him to safeguard their well-being in her absence. However, this perceived respect is deceptive; Aki is merely another piece on her chessboard, utilized to further her grand designs involving Pochita. She sees him not as an ally, but as a tool to manipulate in the pursuit of her ultimate objectives.

Abilities

Makima is recognized as one of the most formidable beings within the Chainsaw Man universe, boasting a combination of physical prowess, supernatural capabilities as a Devil, and a deeply manipulative nature. Her fearsome reputation precedes her, instilling dread in humans, Fiends, and Devils alike, which in turn amplifies her own power. The President of the United States has remarked that other nations have resigned themselves to the futility of opposing her.

Devil Capabilities
As a Devil, Makima wields all the conventional abilities associated with her kind, including the capacity to forge contracts with humans. Her unique ability to exert control over others allows her to compel individuals into making contracts with her, exemplified by her pact with the Prime Minister of Japan. This contract grants her a remarkable defensive mechanism: any lethal damage inflicted upon her is redirected to an illness affecting a random citizen of Japan. For instance, after being shot in the head, Makima appeared unharmed, claiming to have merely been grazed. Despite enduring fatal attacks—including one from the Gun Devil—she demonstrated an uncanny ability to survive, having been killed twenty-six times prior to the Gun Devil’s assault. During their climactic battle, she faced repeated deaths at the hands of Pochita.

Ultimately, Denji discovered a means to circumvent the conditions of her contract by ending her life, perceiving it as an act of love rather than aggression. Upon being consumed by him, she was transported back to Hell and subsequently reincarnated as Nayuta in China, thanks to the revival capabilities inherent to Devils.

Physical Abilities
    • Immense Strength: Makima possesses extraordinary physical strength, enabling her to engage effectively in hand-to-hand combat without the need for assistance from her subordinates. Her power was substantial enough to overpower Pochita in his weakened state, even shattering his chainsaws with her strikes.
    • Enhanced Smell: She has an acute sense of smell, allowing her to identify individuals based on their scent. This was evident when she discerned Pochita’s lingering presence within Denji during their first encounter. However, she struggles to visually distinguish between humans, similar to how humans may find it difficult to tell dogs apart.
Supernatural Abilities
    • Control (支配 Shihai): Makima embodies the fear of control and domination, a reflection of her nature. Her core ability allows her to manipulate those she deems inferior, encapsulated in her assertion that she can control any being she perceives as lesser. This brainwashing power extends to humans, animals, Devils, Fiends, and Hybrids, with no apparent limit to how many she can control simultaneously. Victims under her influence lose memories of their actions both prior to and during their subjugation.
    • Chain Summoning: She can summon and channel the powers of those she controls via chains linked to her body. This ability enables her to harness the skills of individuals such as the Angel Devil, Future Devil, Snake Devil, Punishment Devil, Spider Devil, and Zombie Devil—even those who have passed away can be summoned in this manner. This level of control suggests she can not only exert dominance but subtly alter the personalities of her subjects.
    • Remote Hearing: Makima can utilize the senses of small animals she controls to eavesdrop on conversations from virtually anywhere, even potentially extending to Hell itself. She exploited this ability to spy on Denji’s discussions with Reze and Kishibe’s talks with Quanxi.
    • Animal Travel: By controlling large groups of rats, Makima can traverse distances instantaneously, allowing them to coalesce into a human shape for her transport. She can also use the Spider Devil’s zippers to travel between Earth and Hell or other locations.
    • Voice Command: She can compel others to hear her voice by placing her hand on their head, even reaching those who have died. This enables her to exert influence over the Devils with whom the deceased held contracts.

Force Manipulation
Makima exhibits the capability to manipulate an unseen force, akin to the Darkness Devil. This power can be utilized offensively, such as inflicting internal damage on her weaker opponents simply by gazing at them. Some notable applications include:

    • Crushing Attacks: By using a combination of altitude, the name of her target, and a human sacrifice, she can crush opponents from a distance. This technique obliterates the target’s body while leaving nearby objects and individuals unharmed, though those involved are blindfolded during the ritual. She once used this from Kyoto to eliminate members of Sawatari’s gang.
  • Direct Force Projection: Makima can project invisible force onto specific targets, demonstrated by her ability to heavily damage the Darkness Devil, kill Power instantly, and launch an empowered Chainsaw Man into the atmosphere through repeated use of this technique, typically accompanied by her signature declaration, “Bang!” (バン!).
  • Decapitation: She has also displayed the capability to remove the heads of targets within her vicinity using a sword, reminiscent of her ability to crush targets from afar, with witnesses around her covered to prevent seeing the attack.
Other Abilities
    • High Alcohol Tolerance: Makima possesses an extraordinary tolerance for alcohol, able to outdrink both Aki Hayakawa and Himeno without exhibiting signs of impairment. However, it is likely that the consequences of her drinking are mitigated by her contract with the Japanese Prime Minister, redirecting any adverse effects to a random citizen.
    • Hand-to-Hand Combat: Though not frequently depicted in combat, Makima is a highly skilled fighter, capable of defeating a weakened Pochita using only her martial prowess. She was even able to extract Pochita’s heart after restraining him.
    • High Intelligence: Makima is characterized by her sharp intellect and cunning, allowing her to manipulate situations to her advantage. She demonstrates an acute understanding of human desires, leveraging this knowledge to control Denji throughout much of Part 1. By making him feel loved and valued, she simultaneously orchestrates events to isolate him emotionally, instilling guilt over the losses he endures.

    • Fujimoto has cited FLCL as a significant influence on the female characters inChainsaw Man, suggesting that Makima shares similarities with Haruko, a character known for her manipulative and unpredictable nature.
    • According to Fujimoto, if you drop the “ki” from Makima’s name, you’re left with “Mama,” which resonates with Denji’s ongoing quest for maternal connections, as he lost his mother at a young age.

    • Her connection with pests may relate to interpretations of the Conquest Horseman as the Horseman of Pestilence. This reinterpretation arose because scholars felt that Conquest was too similar to War; Pestilence became a suitable alternative due to the historical association of poisoned bows and arrows with this Horseman. Although Makima’s hand gestures resemble a gun, her “Bang!” ability can also be likened to shooting an arrow.
    • The halo around Makima’s abdomen often symbolizes the crown traditionally worn by the Conquest Horseman.
