Magane Chikujoin

Magane Chikujōin (築城院 真鍳, Chikujōin Magane), is a major antagonist in Re:Creators. She originates from the fictional light novel and anime series Record of the Night Window Demon (夜窓鬼録, Yasōkioroku), where she is a student at Korougamine Academy and a notorious serial killer who has taken the lives of numerous classmates. Unlike many of the other “Created” characters who are warriors or heroes, Magane is a manipulative trickster, using lies, deception, and psychological warfare to achieve her goals.

After being summoned into the real world, Magane takes full advantage of her newfound freedom, choosing to cause chaos for her own amusement rather than align with any particular faction. Her playful yet sadistic nature makes her one of the most unpredictable and dangerous characters, as she operates entirely on her own terms, reveling in the confusion and destruction she leaves in her wake.

Background

Appearance in anime

In Record of the Night Window Demon, Magane was a high school student with a twisted personality who murdered numerous students at her academy. Known for her silver tongue and manipulative skills, she was feared by those around her, though her true nature remained shrouded in mystery. Her psychopathic tendencies and love for twisting words made her a formidable and disturbing villain within her original story.

After being transported to the real world, Magane quickly adapts to her new surroundings, embracing the freedom from her narrative constraints. Unlike other “Created” characters who seek purpose or guidance, Magane revels in the absurdity of her existence, treating everything as a game of manipulation and deceit. Instead of aligning with Altair or the other factions, she plays both sides for her own entertainment, choosing to watch events unfold with gleeful amusement.

With no loyalties and no moral compass, Magane is one of the most unpredictable forces in Re:Creators, acting purely out of personal amusement rather than ideology or vengeance.

Appearance

Magane is a tall, slender girl with long black hair tied into two low ponytails. Her sharp, cat-like eyes and mischievous smirk perfectly convey her playful yet sinister personality. She wears a modified school uniform, consisting of a short-sleeved blouse, a short pleated skirt, and detached sleeves, giving her a stylish yet unsettling presence.

Her casual and almost carefree demeanor is contrasted by her piercing gaze, which often betrays her malicious intent. Unlike other “Created” characters who display grand heroism or noble ambitions, Magane’s lax and almost lazy posture reflects her complete disregard for rules, structure, or authority.

Personality

Magane is a pathological liar, a sadistic trickster, and an opportunistic manipulator. She enjoys twisting words, bending truths, and deceiving others purely for the joy of watching people squirm. She views life as a giant joke, treating every interaction as a game of wit and deception where she always seeks the upper hand.

Her detached and playful nature makes her uniquely dangerous, as she is not driven by revenge, justice, or ideology she simply enjoys chaos for chaos’s sake. This makes her an unpredictable wild card, as she can switch allegiances on a whim if it means gaining amusement or power.

Despite her playful speech and constant jokes, Magane is incredibly intelligent, able to read people instantly and exploit their weaknesses. She takes pleasure in psychological manipulation, often tricking others into making fatal mistakes. Unlike traditional villains who seek power through brute force, Magane plays mind games, proving that words can be just as lethal as weapons.

However, her greatest weakness is her own arrogance because she underestimates those around her, she often fails to anticipate when the tables turn against her.

Role in the Story

  • A Neutral Wild Card
Unlike the other “Created” characters, Magane does not take sides in the conflict. She refuses to follow Altair, seeing her as too dramatic and self-righteous, but she also has no desire to help the real-world creators. Instead, she watches from the sidelines, treating everything like a form of entertainment.

  • Manipulating and Betraying Others
Throughout the series, Magane continuously betrays and deceives those around her, using her charm and intellect to manipulate situations to her advantage. She enjoys spreading misinformation and planting seeds of distrust, ensuring that no one ever truly knows whose side she is on.

  • Encounter with Sōta and Selesia
At one point, Magane crosses paths with Sōta and Selesia, toying with them and testing their resolve. Though she could have easily aligned with Altair, she chooses instead to act on her own, creating chaotic situations for no reason other than to see what unfolds.

    Clashing with Other “Created” Characters
Due to her unpredictable nature, Magane frequently clashes with other characters, particularly those who value honor and morality. She sees figures like Alicetaria and Selesia as naive, mocking their heroic ideals while proving how easily they can be exploited through lies and deception.

    Final Actions and Fate
By the end of the story, Magane remains one of the few characters who neither aligns with Altair nor fully opposes her. Unlike others who fight for a cause, she simply enjoys the ride, walking away from the chaos she helped create as if it were just another game.

Relationships

Altair
While Altair represents vengeance and destruction, Magane sees her as too serious and self-important. She finds Altair’s mission boring, as it lacks the kind of playful chaos that Magane enjoys.

Sōta Mizushino
Magane sees Sōta as an amusing toy, constantly provoking him and testing his limits. Unlike Altair, who sees Sōta as a symbol of guilt, Magane views him as entertainment, using him as a pawn in her games.

Alicetaria February
Alicetaria’s strong sense of justice clashes with Magane’s chaotic nature. Magane enjoys taunting and deceiving her, proving how easily a knight’s honor can be twisted into a weapon against them.

Trivia

    • Her name, “Chikujōin,” includes the kanji for “fortress” (築城), which contrasts her destructive and chaotic nature.
      • Her personality is based on traditional trickster archetypes, such as Loki or the kitsune (fox spirit) in Japanese folklore.
      • She is the only major antagonist who survives without being defeated, simply walking away from the battle.

    Legacy

      • Magane Chikujōin is one of Re:Creators’ most unpredictable and entertaining antagonists. As a chaotic trickster, she thrives in disrupting order, bending reality, and turning truth into lies. Her lack of allegiance, combined with her immense intelligence, makes her a wild card that keeps both the characters and audience guessing until the very end.
