Luna (ルナ, Runa), is the enigmatic force at the center of Casshern’s journey, known as “the Sun that was Named Moon” and the life of the planet. Once regarded as a savior who opposed Braiking Boss, Luna was seen as a source of hope and renewal, standing against the tyranny of the robotic empire. Her presence was a direct challenge to Braiking Boss’s rule, prompting him to send his strongest warrior, Casshern, to assassinate her. However, her death did not bring victory to Braiking Boss it triggered the Ruin, an apocalyptic event that caused all life to decay and threw the world into irreversible despair.
Yet, Luna’s story did not end with her death. Because her blood of life mixed with Casshern’s blood of death, she was reborn, but not as the same benevolent figure she once was. Instead of offering salvation through death, the new Luna sought to erase all life that had been consumed by Ruin, turning her from a beacon of hope into a cold, merciless force of false eternity. In Casshern Sins, she serves as a hidden antagonist, embodying the conflict between life, death, and the consequences of immortality.
Background

Appearance in anime
Before the Ruin, Luna was seen as a goddess-like figure, a being capable of sustaining life and reversing death. Many believed that she held the key to eternal existence, and those who followed her saw her as the last hope for a dying world. Her ability to oppose Braiking Boss’s rule made her a threat to the robotic overlord, leading him to order Casshern to eliminate her.
However, rather than restoring order, Luna’s assassination shattered the balance of life and death, leading to the slow decay of all living things. Robots and humans alike began to crumble into dust, their bodies unable to sustain themselves. This tragic event marked the beginning of the Ruin, a world where immortality had become a curse rather than a gift.
When Luna was reborn, she was no longer the same entity that had once been worshipped as a savior. Instead, she became a goddess of false life, believing that true salvation did not come from the acceptance of death, but from erasing those who were no longer pure. Her rebirth placed her in direct opposition to Casshern, as she now sought to purge the world of those who had been tainted by the Ruin.
Appearance
Luna has an elegant yet ethereal appearance, resembling a divine being untouched by time or decay. She has pale skin, long flowing blonde hair, and deep, sorrowful eyes, exuding an aura of both warmth and cold detachment. Her dress is simple yet regal, reinforcing her image as a sacred figure.
Unlike others who crumble under the effects of the Ruin, Luna remains perfectly preserved, making her seem almost inhuman. This further separates her from the suffering beings of the world, symbolizing how she has become an untouchable force beyond mortality.
Personality
Luna’s personality shifts dramatically between her past self and her reborn form, reflecting her dual nature as both a savior and a destroyer.
Before her death, Luna was seen as a warm, compassionate figure, embodying hope and renewal. She represented the cycle of life, offering her followers the choice to accept death as a natural part of existence. Her defiance against Braiking Boss showed her unwavering will, proving that she valued life above all else.
However, after her rebirth, Luna became detached, emotionless, and almost mechanical in her ideology. No longer the goddess of salvation, she rejected the concept of death entirely, believing that those who had succumbed to the Ruin should be erased rather than allowed to wither away. This turned her into a cruel, unfeeling force, determined to wipe away all who no longer fit her vision of a pure world.
Her new philosophy directly contrasts with Casshern’s, as he comes to understand that mortality gives life meaning, while Luna seeks to eliminate suffering through control and stagnation. This fundamental difference puts them at opposite ends of the battle for existence, with Luna standing as the ultimate representation of false salvation.
Role in the Story
-
The Catalyst for the Ruin
Luna’s assassination by Casshern is the single most important event in the story, marking the beginning of the Ruin. Her death, rather than bringing stability, leads to an apocalyptic decay where all living beings, both human and robotic, begin to wither away. -
Her Rebirth as a False Goddess
When Luna returns, she is no longer the savior that the world once revered. Instead, she has adopted a new purpose, one that no longer accepts the inevitability of death. Rather than allowing life to exist naturally, she seeks to erase all who have fallen into decay, ensuring that only those untouched by the Ruin remain. -
The Conflict with Casshern
Casshern, who has spent his journey searching for redemption, comes to realize that Luna’s new ideology is a perversion of what she once stood for. While she seeks to remove suffering by eliminating the ruined, Casshern understands that life and death must coexist for true meaning to exist. This puts them on opposite ends of the philosophical struggle Luna stands for false eternity, while Casshern represents the painful yet necessary acceptance of mortality. -
The Final Confrontation
As the story progresses, Casshern is forced to face Luna, questioning whether her new existence is truly salvation or just another form of destruction. The ultimate battle between them is not just a physical conflict, but a battle of ideologies, forcing Casshern to make the most difficult choice of his existence.
Relationships
Casshern
Casshern was once Luna’s executioner, but after her rebirth, they become rivals in ideology. Casshern comes to regret his actions and sees Luna’s new purpose as a perversion of life, forcing him to oppose her despite once believing in her power.
Braiking Boss
Luna was one of the few beings capable of defying Braiking Boss, making her his greatest enemy. Though he succeeded in ordering her assassination, the Ruin that followed marked the beginning of his own downfall, showing that her influence extended beyond life and death.
Dio and Leda
While Luna’s influence shaped the world itself, her rebirth also affected Casshern’s former siblings, Dio and Leda. Dio, who seeks to surpass Casshern, ultimately represents the destructive nature of rivalry, while Leda, who craves control, mirrors Luna’s newfound ideology of selective existence.
