Lucy Maud Montgomery (ルーシー・モード・モンゴメリ, Rūshī Mōdo Mongomeri) is a former member of the American organization known as the Guild. She wields the ability Anne of Abyssal Red and plays a critical role in the organization’s activities before its eventual dissolution. Following the Guild’s collapse, Lucy’s journey leads her to a new chapter, reflecting her resilience and resourcefulness.
Personality

Appearance as Waitress
Lucy Maud Montgomery’s personality is shaped by the hardships she endured during her time at the orphanage and the dismissive treatment she received as a mere tool within the Guild. These experiences contributed to her twisted and cynical outlook on life. To mask her vulnerability, Lucy often presents herself as haughty and rude, using this facade as a shield to protect her true, more fragile nature.
Despite her harsh exterior, a softer side of Lucy emerges after her defeat by Atsushi Nakajima. His genuine kindness and concern for her well-being deeply affect her, suggesting that she may have developed feelings for him. Atsushi’s empathy and willingness to see her as more than just a pawn in a larger game reveal the potential for Lucy to grow beyond the bitterness fostered by her difficult past. This duality in her character makes her a compelling figure, balancing her defensive demeanor with glimpses of hope and emotional depth.
Appearance
Lucy Maud Montgomery is a petite girl with pale skin, green eyes, and long crimson hair styled into two thick braids, accompanied by choppy bangs. A white flower hairpiece adorns the left side of her head, adding a delicate touch to her otherwise striking appearance. She also wears braces, emphasizing her youthful look. A notable feature is the scar on her right arm, a painful reminder of her time at the orphanage, inflicted by a hot iron poker.
When working as a waitress, Lucy dons an apron and a white triangular headpiece, reflecting her humble role. In moments requiring discretion, such as at the Airtram terminal, she opts for a straw hat and sunglasses as a disguise to covertly assist Atsushi and Kyōka Izumi on their way to the Sky Casino without drawing attention. These varied outfits showcase her adaptability and determination in navigating different scenarios.
Background
Lucy Maud Montgomery endured a harsh upbringing in an orphanage, where she was subjected to relentless labor and mistreatment. Her daily routine involved washing dishes for hours on end with aching hands, and she had to wear the same clothes, pieced together from patched-up leftovers, for an entire year. These conditions reflected the neglect and lack of compassion she faced during her formative years.
Her ability, Anne of Abyssal Red, further alienated her from those around her, leading others to label her a “freak.” This ostracization deeply affected Lucy’s self-perception and interactions with others. Eventually, her unique ability caught the attention of the Guild, which recruited her into their ranks. While this opportunity gave her a new sense of purpose, her time with the Guild also underscored her value as a mere tool in their schemes, leaving her with a lingering sense of bitterness and mistrust.
Ability
Lucy’s ability, Anne of Abyssal Red (深淵の赤毛のアン, Shin’en no Akage no An), allows her to create an alternate reality known as Anne’s Room. This space functions as a prison where individuals are trapped through a game of hide-and-seek with Anne the Monster. Inside Anne’s Room, there are two significant doors: the Exit Door and the Prison Door. The Exit Door leads back to the real world and is accessible to anyone; however, leaving through this door erases all memories of the time spent inside Anne’s Room. In contrast, the Prison Door leads to a confinement area where Lucy keeps her captives. This door is locked and requires a special key to open. When someone is captured by Anne, giant hands emerge from the Prison Door and drag the individual inside.
Within the prison, captives remain unconscious and cannot escape through force, as the hands securely restrain them. Only by unlocking the door with the elusive key or Lucy ending the ability can the detainees be freed. The key itself is exceptionally difficult to use, morphing whenever someone attempts to operate it. Lucy has stated that she does not fully understand how to utilize the key, and it has yet to be successfully employed. Central to her ability is Anne, a giant, monstrous entity with immense strength and speed. Anne captures targets without inflicting physical harm, ensuring their confinement within the prison. Lucy can summon at least two copies of Anne simultaneously, although the full extent of Anne’s powers remains unclear.
Lucy’s ability showcases her cunning and the psychological nature of her tactics. By trapping individuals in an alternate reality where escape is nearly impossible, Anne of Abyssal Red serves as both a strategic weapon and a testament to Lucy’s resourcefulness.
Role in Bungo Stray Dogs
During her time with the Guild, Lucy played a significant role in its operations, using her ability to trap enemies and turn the tide of battle. Her loyalty to the Guild was rooted in her gratitude toward Fitzgerald, who offered her a sense of purpose and belonging.
Lucy’s relationship with Atsushi is a pivotal aspect of her character arc. Initially an adversary, she later forms a bond with Atsushi, who offers her understanding and encouragement. This relationship helps Lucy begin to confront her insecurities and strive for a better future.
After the Guild’s fall, Lucy begins a journey of self-discovery, seeking to establish her own identity and purpose beyond the organization. Her efforts to change and grow highlight her resilience and determination to overcome her past.
