Loid Forger

Striving To Live Up to One’s Ideals Is an Admirable Thing, of Course, but When Those Ideals Start to Constrict You, It’s Easy To Lose Sight of Who You Are and Where Your True Strengths Lie.

— Loid Forger

Loid Forger (ロイド・フォージャー,Roido Fōjā?) is one of the main protagonists of theSPY x FAMILYseries. He has completely discarded his past to serve as an undercover spy for the country ofWestalis, operating under the codename“Twilight”(〈黄昏たそがれ〉,Tasogare?). His real name remains a mystery, and he assumes the aliasLoid Forger.

For his latest mission, he is required to marry and have a child. To fulfill this, he forms a marriage withYor Briarand becomes the adoptive father ofAnya Forger.

Appearance

Yor’s full appearance.

Loid Forger is a strikingly handsome man with short, ruffled blond hair, sharp blue eyes, and a light complexion. His hair is usually styled in a slicked-back fashion, though he often leaves it slightly tousled depending on the situation. His eyes, often narrowed and intense, reflect his sharp intelligence and steely focus. Standing tall with a lean yet muscular build, Loid exudes a commanding presence that matches his reputation as the skilled spy “Twilight.” Though his exact age remains a mystery, his appearance and history suggest he’s in his late twenties to early thirties.

Loid’s natural charm doesn’t go unnoticed—his looks have earned him plenty of admirers, with many falling for his dreamlike appearance. Even Anya’s best friend, Becky Blackbell, openly gushes about how “dreamy” he is.

When on duty, Loid is typically seen in his signature light green three-piece suit, accompanied by a red tie, a crisp white shirt, and polished black leather shoes. A key detail is the WISE pin on his left lapel, shaped like a dagger, symbolizing his allegiance to the Westalian intelligence agency. Depending on the mission, Loid complements his outfit with various accessories, including different hats, trench coats, and gloves, or occasionally a watch on his left wrist.

For covert operations, Loid adopts a more tactical look, donning all-black attire designed for stealth. This includes a long-sleeved shirt, boots, fingerless gloves, and a mask that conceals his lower face, all while maintaining his signature WISE pin. He sometimes adds goggles and a beanie-like hat for extra anonymity during missions.

At home, Loid’s style shifts to comfort. He’s often seen in simple T-shirts in neutral colors paired with long pants or blue jeans, occasionally layering with a vest or sweater. As a psychiatrist at Berlint General Hospital, he wears a professional lab coat over his usual shirt and tie, reflecting the dual life he leads as both a spy and a family man.

As a child, Loid’s innocent appearance was marked by a white button-down shirt, black shorts with suspenders, and crew socks—a far cry from the hardened spy he would later become. When he joined the Westalian Army during the Second East-West War, his transformation began as he donned the standard military uniform, setting the stage for the man who would later become Twilight.

Personality

Loid’s kind nature.

Loid Forger’s personality is a study in contrast, befitting his life as the top spy of Westalis. As “Twilight,” Loid can seamlessly adapt to any situation, projecting whatever persona is necessary to accomplish his mission. On the surface, he appears cold, methodical, and entirely focused on achieving his objectives. This ruthlessness extends to joining terrorist organizations, dating targets, or even becoming a father, all in the name of success. For Loid, everything is a logical means to an end.

However, beneath this calculating exterior, Loid hides a surprising depth of kindness and empathy, especially when it comes to his new family—Anya and Yor. While his relationships with them started as part of Operation Strix, Loid’s genuine concern for their well-being slowly reveals itself. Despite the stakes of his mission, Loid finds himself invested in their happiness and safety, even going so far as to take risks that could jeopardize his goals.

His abilities as a spy are second to none. Loid excels in both physical combat and mental strategy, disarming entire squads of enemies and devising complex plans on the spot. His greatest asset, though, may be his knack for reading people. Loid can analyze a person’s entire personality, predict their reactions, and tailor his responses to manipulate them—all while keeping an intricate web of information in his head. Still, he admits that women and children are enigmas to him. His struggles with understanding Yor’s emotions and Anya’s unpredictable behavior often lead him to overthink and misinterpret their actions.

A prime example of this is when Loid planned an elaborate date with Yor, assuming she was upset with him, and created over 862 potential strategies to cheer her up. Unbeknownst to him, Yor was simply in pain from being shot the night before during an assassination mission. Loid’s plans all failed as a result of his misunderstanding. Similarly, he remains oblivious to the romantic feelings of Fiona Frost, his colleague, and even the innocent crush Becky has on him.

Loid’s dedication to his missions is unwavering, driven by an intense sense of responsibility. He is willing to go to any lengths to ensure the success of Operation Strix but is deeply averse to putting innocent people, even pawns, in harm’s way. This was evident when he rescued Anya from the clutches of a crime boss but initially planned to move her to a safer orphanage to avoid involving a child in his mission. Even when it comes to animals, Loid shows compassion, saving a bomb-strapped dog during a mission rather than killing it, eventually rescuing the dog, who would become part of the Forger family as Bond.

Loid’s strict upbringing and military background have ingrained in him a strong sense of discipline. This extends to how he tutors Anya, insisting on strict study sessions and often being tough on her when she struggles. However, under Yor’s influence, he softens, realizing the need for balance between discipline and leniency. The same can be said of his approach to training Bond, where he initially scolded the dog for mistakes but later changed tactics, opting for kindness.

Loid’s cold demeanor stems from a traumatic past. As a war orphan who lost everything during the Second East-West War, Loid was forced to fend for himself in the streets. To survive, he “shut off” his emotions, believing that attachment, love, or hate would only hinder his work as a spy. Despite this, the tragic memories of war, and the hope of creating a world where children don’t have to suffer as he did, motivate him. He dreams of a world without war—a stark contrast to the violence and bloodshed that shaped him into the man he is today.

Yet Loid’s past weighs heavily on him. His early naivety led him to blindly hate the Ostanians, Westalis’ wartime enemies, believing them to be the sole cause of the war. But encounters with an Ostanian deserter named Franky, who later became his trusted informant, and the discovery that his childhood friends had survived the war, forced him to reconsider his beliefs. He realized that his ignorance and blind hatred had led him astray. Since then, Loid has vowed to never again let false beliefs or unchecked emotions cloud his judgment.

Despite his strict, cold, and isolated demeanor, Loid’s interactions with Yor, Anya, and Bond have slowly started to thaw his heart. Though the Forger family is a facade for his mission, Loid finds himself growing attached to them, building bonds that he never expected. He sympathizes with Yor’s sacrifices for her family, supports Anya in her quest for love and acceptance, and has even confided in Bond about his life as a spy. Loid’s lonely, reclusive existence is gradually giving way to something new—an unexpected, yet welcome connection to a family he never planned to keep.

Abilities and Skills

Loid Forger, known by his codenameTwilight, is an exceptional spy with over ten years of experience, after initially serving in the Westalian military. He possesses an extraordinary range of abilities and skills, making him an invaluable agent for WISE. His expertise encompasses physical prowess, intelligence, and adaptability, establishing him as a “jack of all trades.” His skillset includes expertise in hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship, and masterful disguises.

  • Genius-level Intellect: Twilight’s intelligence is one of his most powerful assets. He exhibits feats of intellect that can be described as genius-level. His nearly photographic memory allows him to recall vast amounts of information, such as recognizing over 200 penguins’ names and dietary habits after skimming a list. He has memorized intelligence manuals, recognized subtle clues in complex environments, and even mastered reading lips from afar. His remarkable observational skills enable him to notice minute details, like detecting a raid on his apartment or distinguishing a tennis court’s panels.

Twilight’s fast thought process and complex analytical skills allow him to assess situations within mere seconds, which at times overwhelms his daughter Anya’s telepathic abilities. His tactical foresight was demonstrated when he anticipated clothing mishaps during the Eden Academy interview or wore a bulletproof vest during an underground tennis match.

  • Trap Mastery: Twilight is proficient at devising and setting traps that are undetectable by even the most skilled foes, such as the SSS. His traps are designed to gain tactical advantages in combat.

  • Master of Disguise: One of Twilight’s defining traits is his mastery of disguise. He can convincingly impersonate individuals of different body types, and his skill in mimicking others’ voices and mannerisms is so precise that Ostanian Intelligence has no idea what he truly looks like. His disguises have allowed him to escape dangerous situations, and he has also created convincing disguises for others, such as Franky and Fiona. His aptitude extends even to adopting the guise of a sumo wrestler, despite his significantly smaller physique.

  • Enhanced Speed and Agility: Loid’s athletic ability is exceptional. He can perform parkour, evade trained dogs, and execute acrobatic stunts. During a tennis match, he dodged rubber bullets fired by snipers, demonstrating agility far beyond the average human.

  • Enhanced Senses: Twilight possesses heightened senses, allowing him to detect hidden observers, discern the tiniest WISE symbol in a crowded space, and even sense the presence of colorless, odorless gas. He can also recognize suspicious individuals in a crowd or listen for subtle audio cues, such as footsteps.

  • Enhanced Strength: Loid’s physical strength is extraordinary. He has pulled an obese child out of a gutter using only one arm, shattered wooden tables with his fists, and hurled a bomb far into the sea to prevent a ship from exploding. His strength has also been demonstrated in various life-threatening situations, such as barricading doors with dumpsters and stopping large debris from falling.

  • Enhanced Durability and Endurance: Despite experiencing car crashes, concussions, and direct assaults, Twilight is able to continue his work with minimal interruptions. He has withstood multiple hits fromYor, who is known for her superhuman strength, demonstrating impressive resilience.

  • Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Twilight excels in unarmed combat, swiftly dispatching armed thugs and trained agents alike. His ability to improvise in battle allows him to use everyday objects like cans or belts as makeshift weapons.

  • Expert Marksman: Twilight’s proficiency with firearms is exceptional. He can shoot with precision in high-pressure situations, such as during close-quarters combat or when neutralizing a bomb attached to a dog.

  • Vehicular Expertise: Twilight is skilled in piloting various types of vehicles, including automobiles and aircraft, showcasing his adeptness in high-speed chases and piloting missions.

  • Master Polymath: Twilight has a near-superhuman ability to learn and master any skill in an incredibly short amount of time. This includes bomb defusing, lockpicking, lip reading, and even cooking. He has convincingly played the part of a professional tennis player, sumo wrestler, and doctor. He also mastered new hobbies like horseback riding and building intricate sandcastles for Anya.

  • Alcohol Tolerance: Twilight has a high tolerance for alcohol, making it difficult for others to intoxicate him. This has allowed him to outsmart others, such as when Yuri tried to get him drunk.

  • Intimidation: Twilight can easily instill fear in his opponents with his presence or through verbal threats. He once scared a powerful opponent in a tennis match with just his aura and has used information to manipulate others effectively.

  • Weapons and Equipment: Twilight’s primary weapon is a pistol, resembling a Luger, equipped with a silencer. His equipment also includes a miniature telescope for surveillance, a suitcase containing spy gear, a radio transmitter, listening devices, and explosives.

  • Teaching: Loid has been a proficient mentor, training Fiona Frost to become a highly skilled secret agent.

  • Cooking: Loid is a skilled chef, capable of preparing meals that delight his family. He once worked undercover as a world-class chef and can cook anything from complex gourmet dishes to everyday meals.

Twilight’s unique combination of intelligence, combat ability, and versatility make him one of the most formidable agents in the WISE organization.

Weaknesses

Overassessment:Loid’s primary weakness is his tendency to overanalyze situations. His serious dedication to maintaining peace as a spy often leads him to suspect potential threats, causing him to overthink matters that may be simpler than they appear. For instance, upon discovering thatYuriwas a member of the SSS, Loid began to suspect thatYormight also be involved in intelligence work and could even be aware of his identity as a spy. Despite conducting a background investigation that cleared her, Loid chose to follow her and secretly placed a listening device on her dress to monitor her conversations. He even disguised himself as an SSS lieutenant to interrogate her further. After confirming that she was unaware of both her brother’s true job and his role as a spy, Loid felt guilty for doubting her.

This overanalyzing behavior extends to his interactions withAnya, where Loid often assumes that her actions are influenced by past traumas. However, Anya’s actions are usually innocent and motivated by her own interests, particularly in hiding her telepathic abilities. Occasionally, Anya uses Loid’s concern to her advantage or tries to ease his worries.

Relationships

Family

Anya Forger

Anya is the adopted daughter of Loid Forger. Despite being young, she possesses the unique ability to read minds, though Loid is unaware of this. Anya admires Loid deeply, seeing him as a strong and capable father, and is eager to help him succeed in his secret missions, though she sometimes misunderstands his true intentions. Their bond grows stronger over time as Loid, originally adopting her for the sake of his mission, becomes more protective and caring toward her.

Yor Forger

Yor is Loid’s wife in their fake marriage, arranged for mutual benefit. While Loid married her to maintain the façade of a normal family, Yor sees their relationship as a way to cover her own secret life as an assassin. Despite the marriage being based on deception, they grow closer, showing genuine care for each other. Yor’s naive and kind-hearted nature often contrasts with Loid’s calculated personality, but this balance helps maintain harmony within the family.

Bond Forger

Bond is the Forger family’s dog with the ability to see into the future. Loid takes a liking to Bond, appreciating his intelligence and loyalty. Bond becomes an important part of the family dynamic, especially to Anya, who uses his ability to help them in various situations. Loid, despite being highly focused on his mission, shows moments of affection toward Bond as the dog continues to play a significant role in the family’s adventures.

Yuri Briar

Yuri is Yor’s younger brother and a dedicated officer working for the State Security Service (SSS). He is overly protective of his sister and suspicious of Loid, seeing him as unworthy of Yor’s affection. Although Yuri is unaware of Loid’s true identity as a spy, his loyalty to his sister creates a tense relationship with Loid, who must constantly maintain his cover while interacting with Yuri. Despite the tension, both men share an underlying desire to protect Yor.

Loid’s Mother

Loid’s mother is only briefly mentioned in his past, but she had a strong influence on his sense of morality and responsibility. Her caring nature helped shape the man Loid became, though the specifics of their relationship remain largely undisclosed in the series.

Loid’s Father

Loid’s father is depicted as a strict and authoritative figure, particularly when it came to education and discipline. His relationship with Loid seems strained due to these high expectations, but Loid’s respect for his father’s teachings can be seen in his meticulous and diligent approach to his spy work. The pressures of his childhood influence his current emotional distance and lack of attachment.

Allies

Sylvia Sherwood

Sylvia, known as Handler, is Loid’s direct superior in WISE, the Westalian Intelligence. She plays a critical role in assigning Loid his missions and acts as his link to headquarters. Their relationship is professional but built on mutual respect. Sylvia often provides Loid with strategic advice, though she also shows concern for his well-being, understanding the immense pressure he faces.

Fiona Frost

Fiona Frost, code name “Nightfall,” is a fellow WISE agent who works alongside Loid. She admires Loid professionally and personally, harboring romantic feelings for him. Fiona sees herself as a more suitable partner for Loid, both in missions and in life, though she remains unaware of Loid’s growing attachment to his current family. Their interactions are marked by her unwavering dedication to both their missions and her desire to be by his side.

Franky Franklin

Franky is Loid’s informant and often provides him with crucial intel for his missions. Though they have a professional relationship, Franky is one of the few people Loid allows himself to be somewhat relaxed around. Franky often provides comic relief, and while he admires Loid’s skills, he occasionally offers his own (often misguided) advice on Loid’s personal life. Despite his playful nature, Franky is reliable and loyal.

WISE Agent

The various WISE agents that Loid interacts with are highly competent and serve the Westalian cause. Loid’s interactions with them are mostly professional, and he is regarded as one of the best agents within the organization. These agents provide Loid with the necessary support to complete his missions, ranging from gathering intelligence to assisting in undercover operations.

Loid & Anya Original Design Sketches.

    • During the development pitch, Twilight’s code name was originally “Mirage” (〈蜃気楼ミラージュ〉?) to reflect the mystery surrounding his real face. “Twilight” was initially a placeholder name that stuck.
    • In the design phase, Twilight’s current persona was supposed to be named “Oscar.” His original characteristics included making kids smile as a magician during the war and being invulnerable while in his fake persona.
    • Tatsuya Endo always intended for Loid’s cover job to be a high-paying profession, initially considering either a doctor or a lawyer. Due to Endo’s affinity for psychology, Loid was made a psychiatrist.
    • Loid’s design appears to take inspiration fromGath, the protagonist of Endo’s previous one-shotIshi ni Usubeni, Tetsu ni Hoshi. Early sketches of Loid showed him with a slightly broader and more muscular build.
    • The lapel pin on Loid’s clothing is his organization’s symbol, which also appears on various outfits throughout the series, usually on his torso.
    • Twilight is highly regarded within his organization, with many WISE agents eager to see him in person. Some agents even rushed to the castle upon hearing his name and wanted his autograph.
    • Twilight often chooses names for his personas that start with “L” or “R” (e.g., “Loid,” “Robert,” “Lionel,” “Lawrence,” “Roland”). In Japanese, the distinction between “L” and “R” sounds is minimal, with both being transcribed using “r.”
    • Loid’s fake last name, Forger, is a nod to the “forged family” dynamic he’s playing a part in. In the Campbelldon,Nightfallselected the last name Foney, reflecting their “phony couple” arrangement.
    • Loid’s name was originally romanized as “Lloyd” until Chapter 10, when it was officially licensed by Viz Media.

    • The alias Twain Foney, used in the Campbelldon, is derived from his agent codename “Twilight,” while Nightfall’s alias Nafalia follows a similar pattern. In Japanese, Loid used the name “Garesso” (ガレッソ?), which is also a derivation of his Japanese codename “Tasogare” (黄昏たそがれ?).
    • The chair featured on the cover of the first volume, which Loid sits in, is a Grand Confort LC-2 Petit Modèle armchair designed by Le Corbusier.

    • Operation Strixis Loid’s toughest mission to date. Even Anya’s admission interview caused him more stress than stopping a nuclear bomb.
    • When compared toYorin terms of physical combat ability, Yor ranks as a 10, while Loid is around a 6 or 7. However, Loid compensates with his spy skills, including proficiency with firearms, traps, and other abilities.
    • Due to his busy schedule with both missions and hospital work, Loid only manages to get 2 hours of sleep each night.
