A renowned pianist from Austria, Licht is eccentric and deeply convinced of his identity as an “angel.” He serves as the Eve of Lawless, the Servamp of Greed, forming a unique and volatile partnership with the vampire. Licht Jekylland Todoroki’s Appearance in Anime

Despite being 18 years old, Licht Jekylland Todoroki often displays the mannerisms of a naive child. He strongly believes himself to be an angel and behaves accordingly, frequently coming across as eccentric and detached from reality, often described as denpa (a term for those who seem disconnected from ordinary perception). His self-image as an angel fuels his hostility toward vampires, whom he regards as “demons,” and he shows little hesitation in attacking them. Licht is quick-tempered, prone to violence, and often acts impulsively without considering the consequences.

Beneath his extreme behavior, Licht has a gentle side, particularly toward animals. He addresses them with the suffix “-san” and was first drawn to Lawless after encountering him in hedgehog form. One of his childhood dreams was to communicate with animals, highlighting his childlike innocence and affection for smaller creatures.

Although emotionally immature, Licht demonstrates moments of clarity and sharp insight, especially in matters concerning Lawless. He believes individuality comes from pursuing one’s desires with conviction, and he applies this philosophy to his own aspirations. Licht’s persistence and determination reflect his strong will, allowing him to continue following his ideals regardless of obstacles.

Appearance

Licht Jekylland Todoroki is portrayed as a slightly tall young man with black hair, distinguished by a single white strand on the left side of his head. He has grey eyes in the manga, though in the anime adaptation they are depicted as blue. His expression is frequently described as irritated or annoyed, contributing to his sharp and aloof behavior.

Licht’s typical attire consists of a black hoodie, white pants, and black boots. His most recognizable accessory is a distinctive white backpack adorned with angel wings, a feature that emphasizes his self-proclaimed identity as an angel and serves as a visual hallmark of his character.

Background

Licht Jekylland Todoroki was born and raised in Vienna, Austria (German: Wien). He is the son of an internationally acclaimed Austrian pianist and a Japanese violinist who grew up in France and later achieved fame as a performer. From an early age, Licht displayed exceptional talent at the piano and developed a deep love for music. According to him, his continued dedication to piano performance stems from a promise he made to a friend.

During one of his earliest concerts attended by both of his parents, Licht became so nervous that his hair temporarily turned white, and his movements appeared stiff as he walked to the stage. Despite his anxiety, his performance was a success, earning him recognition as a prodigy. While most of his hair eventually returned to black, a single white streak remained as a lasting mark of the experience.

Approximately six months prior to the events of the main story, Licht encountered a hedgehog while touring in Boston, United States. He affectionately named the creature “Hyde,” unaware of its true nature. Upon returning from a concert, Licht discovered that the hedgehog had transformed into a young man, revealed to be Lawless, the Servamp of Greed. By accident, Licht formed a contract with him. Realizing he had been deceived, Licht attempted to kill Lawless, whom he regarded as a demon. However, due to the restrictions of their Eve–Servamp contract, the two were unable to separate beyond a certain distance. Although Licht resented the bond, he reluctantly accepted Lawless’s constant presence, beginning their volatile partnership marked by frequent conflict and sharp ideological differences.

Abilities and Skills

Lead
As an Eve, Licht wields two different “Leads” as weapons:

Black Boots
Licht’s primary Lead is a pair of black boots, designed for offensive combat. They enhance the power of his kicks as well as his speed and agility, giving him movements so rapid they appear almost airborne. Strikes delivered with the boots also slow down the healing process of vampires, making them effective against Servamps and their kin.

Piano
Licht’s secondary Lead is his piano, which channels the effects of his music directly into combat. Depending on the piece he performs, the piano can produce a variety of effects, including immobilization or memory manipulation. He is capable of generating a temporary keyboard in midair to continue playing during battle, or even inscribing a keyboard onto an opponent’s body, effectively turning them into an instrument and sending paralyzing sound vibrations through their form. His piano playing can also amplify the power of his Servamp, Lawless, when they fight together.

Techniques

Paralysis
By playing specific pieces on the piano, Licht can paralyze the body of his opponent, an ability shown to be effective only on vampires. He often uses this technique to distinguish between humans and vampires.

Flashback
This technique allows Licht’s music to reveal the past memories of his opponent, forcing them to relive earlier experiences.

Jekyll and Hyde
A cooperative maneuver performed with Lawless, where Licht and Lawless instantly switch places during combat. Licht begins the attack, and as the opponent prepares to counter, Lawless intercepts with a defensive stance, giving Licht the chance to strike decisively.

Phantom of the Opera
By performing the titular song, Licht grants Lawless a temporary power boost, significantly strengthening their combined offensive capability.

Relationships

Lawless
Licht’s most significant relationship is with Lawless, the Servamp of Greed. Initially, Licht encountered him in hedgehog form and adopted him, unaware of his true nature. After accidentally forming a contract, their partnership became strained, as Licht regarded Lawless as a “demon” and frequently attempted to kill him. Despite their constant arguments and violent clashes, Licht and Lawless fight together with remarkable synchronicity, especially when combining their abilities. Over time, their relationship evolves into one of reluctant trust, with Licht pushing Lawless to confront his nihilistic outlook, and Lawless mocking Licht’s belief that he is an angel.

Trivia

    • Licht’s favorite color is silver.
      • Unlike Mahiru and Misono, whose contract chains are attached to their right wrists, Licht’s chain is connected to his right ankle.
      • His favorite foods include cream soda, melon, kakigōri (Japanese shaved ice), and cotton candy. Lawless once described eating kakigōri as “like taking me to the clouds of heaven and over the melting rainbow,” and cotton candy as “like sprinkling the clouds of heaven with stars at the base of the night sky.”
      • His hobbies include playing the piano, karaoke, and climbing trees.
      • Licht dislikes jet lag and often refers to Lawless as a “rotten hedgehog.”
      • His first name, Licht, is the German and Dutch word for “light.”
      • Kuro nicknamed him “Violence Angel-chan” (バイオレンス天使ちゃん, Baiorensu Tenshi-chan) due to Licht’s tendency to use brute force while insisting he is an angel.
      • He is notably bad at volleyball, as shown in the summer vacation drama CD, where he aimed at Lawless but accidentally struck Misono instead.
      • His favorite street in Japan is Harajuku.
      • Licht named his Servamp “Hyde,” a pun on his surname Jekylland. Together the names form “Jekyll and Hyde,” referencing Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, in which Dr. Jekyll harbors a murderous alter ego.
