Appearance
Levi Ackermann stands resolute atop the Founding Titan, a testament to his unwavering determination and unmatched combat prowess in the battle for freedom.
Levi Ackermann has a distinctive appearance that reflects his hardened and battle-worn persona. He has short, straight black hair styled in an undercut, with narrow, steel blue eyes that give him an intense, intimidating look. His eyes are often framed by dark circles, adding to his stern and emotionless expression, which can make it hard for others to read his thoughts. Despite his youthful face, Levi’s demeanor is often serious or expressionless.
Levi is shorter than most, but his compact frame is built with strong muscles from years of using omni-directional mobility gear. His typical outfit includes the Scout Regiment uniform, complete with a light gray button-up shirt and his signature white ascot, though after the coup d’état, he often left the ascot off. On expeditions, Levi wears the Scout Regiment’s green-hooded cloak, though during battles against Marley, he switched to the all-black version of the uniform.
Following an explosion from a Thunder Spear during his fight with Zeke Jaeger, Levi now bears several scars across his face, including a prominent one over his right eye. He also lost the index and middle fingers on his right hand due to the blast. Despite his injuries, Levi remains a formidable and commanding presence.
Personality
Levi Ackermann is known for his strong sense of cleanliness, to the point of being called a “clean freak.” He prefers his surroundings and equipment to be spotless, even cleaning his bloodied blades in the middle of battles. However, Levi has no issue getting dirty when necessary.
Despite this obsession with cleanliness, Levi is often blunt and abrasive, with little regard for politeness. His speech is usually harsh and sarcastic, frequently making coarse, morbid, or insulting remarks that unsettle those around him. This demeanor stems from his early life in the Underground City, where he refused to take orders from anyone. After joining the Scout Regiment, however, Levi grew to deeply respect Commander Erwin Smith, following his orders without question due to his trust in Erwin’s vision.
Levi’s loyalty is selective, limited to those he respects, and he openly shows disdain for authority figures he doesn’t believe in. For example, during Eren Jaeger’s military tribunal, he insulted both the merchants and the Military Police, openly mocking their competence and dedication to humanity’s survival.
Beneath his harsh exterior, Levi has a strong sense of morality and empathy. He places immense value on human life and is deeply disturbed by the revelation that Titans may have once been human. Levi detests unnecessary casualties and encourages his subordinates to use their judgment to avoid reckless deaths. His care for his team is evident, especially when he grieved over the loss of his original Special Operations Squad and was visibly affected by Petra Ral’s death, though he remained silent when confronted by her father.
Levi is ruthless in battle, showing no mercy to Titans or perceived enemies. When the Female Titan was captured, he chillingly described how he intended to mutilate her. Despite his extraordinary combat skills, Levi is not arrogant. He recognizes the limitations of even the best soldiers, acknowledging that no one is invincible, including himself.
While Levi is respected for his combat prowess, he prefers to operate independently. He handles many Titan kills solo and trusts his subordinates to make their own decisions when possible. Despite his leadership qualities, Levi does not see himself as a leader in the same way as Erwin, focusing more on his role as a soldier rather than commanding others.
History
Levi Ackermann was born in the Underground City to Kuchel Ackermann, a prostitute, and grew up in harsh conditions. His mother passed away when he was very young, and he was found by his uncle, Kenny Ackermann. Despite not being an ideal father figure, Kenny decided to take Levi under his wing and taught him how to survive. He trained Levi in knife skills, self-defense, and the violent behaviors necessary for life in the Underground, while also helping him unlock the hidden power of the Ackermann bloodline.
As Levi grew up, Kenny left him behind, believing that he had taught Levi all he needed to know to survive. Levi, now alone, became involved with a fellow thug named Furlan Church. Furlan was impressed by Levi’s strength and recruited him into his gang. Together, they formed a group of thieves and conmen in the Underground City. During one of their heists, Levi and Furlan met a young girl named Isabel, who was trying to reach the surface to free a bird. After scaring off her pursuers, Levi allowed her to join their gang, but not before teaching her how to clean, a reflection of his cleanliness obsession.
The trio soon began working together, with Isabel learning to use omni-directional mobility gear and taking part in their criminal activities. One day, they were approached by a mysterious client offering them a deal: if they completed a dangerous job, they would earn the right to live on the surface. The offer was sweetened by the promise of medical treatment for their injured friend, Yan, who had already been taken to a surface clinic. Levi, suspicious of the arrangement, recognized the deal as a form of hostage-taking but accepted the mission, motivated by the promise of a better life on the surface.
Abilities
Levi Ackermann engages the Beast Titan in a fierce battle, showcasing his unparalleled speed and skill as he fights for humanity’s future.
Omni-Directional Mobility Gear Mastery
Levi is unparalleled in his use of omni-directional mobility gear, with a level of skill that sets him apart as the best. His ability to maneuver at extreme speeds makes him invaluable on the battlefield, often said to be as effective as an entire brigade. His prowess was particularly evident when he single-handedly incapacitated the Female Titan, moving too fast for her to defend herself, something entire squads and even Eren in his Titan form were unable to achieve. Levi’s mastery also allowed him to defeat Zeke Jaeger in his Beast Titan form, despite the lack of suitable terrain to anchor his gear.
Intelligence
Levi’s exceptional battle skill is matched by his keen intellect and quick decision-making. He has demonstrated the ability to assess complex situations under pressure, enabling him to save his comrades and himself multiple times. For example, he quickly deduced the Female Titan’s skin crystallization and regenerative abilities, preventing Mikasa from being killed during her reckless attack. While Levi’s sharp analysis has saved lives, he remains humble, acknowledging that no one can always be right and that some circumstances are simply beyond control.
Sword-Wielding Technique
Levi’s exceptional battle skill is matched by his keen intellect and quick decision-making. He has demonstrated the ability to assess complex situations under pressure, enabling him to save his comrades and himself multiple times. For example, he quickly deduced the Female Titan’s skin crystallization and regenerative abilities, preventing Mikasa from being killed during her reckless attack. While Levi’s sharp analysis has saved lives, he remains humble, acknowledging that no one can always be right and that some circumstances are simply beyond control.
This technique allows Levi to maintain incredible speed and agility in combat, enabling him to dispatch multiple Titans quickly and efficiently. It also conserves his energy, as the circular attacks help him avoid wasting stamina and strength. The continuous motion allows Levi to fight for extended periods and take out multiple enemies in succession.
Levi’s reverse-grip technique may have been influenced by the knife-wielding lessons he received from his uncle, Kenny Ackermann, during his childhood. These early lessons in blade combat helped shape Levi into the formidable fighter he is today, and his mastery of this unique sword-fighting style has made him a fearsome force on the battlefield.
Relationships
Eren Jaeger
Eren greatly respects Levi as humanity’s strongest soldier. Initially, Levi was wary of Eren’s Titan abilities, treating him coldly and with suspicion. However, over time, Levi began to see Eren’s potential and offered him guidance during moments of doubt. Levi’s mentor-like approach helped Eren grow as a soldier, but as Eren’s decisions grew darker, especially after the formation of the Jaegerists, Levi felt disappointment and dismay. Ultimately, Levi acknowledges the need to stop Eren when he becomes a threat to humanity .
Mikasa Ackermann
Mikasa harbored resentment toward Levi after witnessing him beat Eren at his military trial. She held a grudge and even lashed out at him after Eren’s capture by the Female Titan. However, as time passed, Mikasa learned to trust Levi’s leadership, and both began to acknowledge their shared Ackermann bloodline. They fought together during numerous battles, gradually setting aside their differences .
Erwin Smith
Levi and Erwin started with a rocky relationship after Erwin blackmailed Levi into joining the Scout Regiment. Despite this, Levi eventually placed complete trust in Erwin’s judgment and followed his commands without hesitation. Erwin was one of the few people Levi felt he could speak to as an equal, and Erwin’s death deeply affected him. Levi held on to the promise he made to Erwin to kill the Beast Titan, and Erwin’s loss fueled his determination to continue fighting .
Armin Arlelt
Levi recognized Armin’s intelligence and strategic mind, providing emotional support to Armin when he doubted himself. Despite being typically cold, Levi showed his gratitude after Armin saved Jean’s life, acknowledging the difficult choices Armin had to make. Levi also expressed his belief in Armin’s unique potential after he was given the Titan injection instead of Erwin, reminding Armin that he has skills no one else possesses .
Petra Rall
As a member of Levi’s first Special Operations Squad, Petra had deep respect for Levi. He trusted her capabilities as a soldier, and her death during the battle against the Female Titan deeply affected him. Levi carried her body back to the Walls, and her father’s oblivious cheerfulness about her future devastated Levi, as he knew her fate .
Isabel Magnolia and Furlan Church
Levi considered Isabel and Furlan family during their time in the underground. He was fiercely protective of Isabel and devastated by her death, which contributed to his decision to join the Scout Regiment. Furlan was Levi’s confidante, and the two shared a close bond that helped shape Levi’s loyalty to the Scouts .
Kenny Ackermann
Kenny raised Levi in the underground, teaching him survival skills and how to wield a knife. Despite their familial bond, Kenny abandoned Levi when he felt he had nothing left to teach him. Years later, Levi confronted Kenny during the uprising, and despite their antagonistic relationship, Levi was visibly saddened by Kenny’s death, especially after learning that Kenny was his uncle .
Kuchel Ackermann
Levi’s mother, Kuchel, passed away from illness when Levi was young. Though little is known about their relationship, it is implied that Levi was deeply affected by her death, and he likely held a strong bond with her. His uncle Kenny found him at her deathbed, beginning Levi’s journey of survival in the underground .
Zeke Jaeger
Zeke, as the Beast Titan, became one of Levi’s greatest enemies. Levi’s status as humanity’s strongest soldier made him a priority target for Zeke. Despite briefly working together during the Marleyan assault, Levi’s hatred for Zeke remained strong. After Zeke betrayed him by turning his squad into Titans, Levi mercilessly tortured and eventually killed Zeke during the final battle .
