Leone

Leone was one of the senior members of the assassin group, Night Raid, known for her expertise in intelligence gathering and her sharp, level-headed judgment. Her role often involved confirming the legitimacy of the assassination targets Night Raid was tasked with eliminating, making her a crucial figure in their operations. Despite her tough demeanor in battle, Leone was known for her playful and carefree nature, often bringing humor to lighten the group’s dark and dangerous missions.

If we quit now, then all the dead would have died for nothing.
— Leone

Leone’s full appearance.

Leone was a striking young woman with a voluptuous figure and a bold, confident presence. Her short blonde hair, styled with two long strands framing her face, complemented her piercing golden eyes, giving her a fierce yet playful look. Her attire was as daring as her personality—she wore a revealing black tube top, paired with detachable sleeves adorned with gleaming gold bands, along with fitted pants, sturdy boots, and a scarf draped casually around her neck.

When Leone unleashed the power of her Teigu, Lionel, her appearance underwent a wild transformation. Her hair grew longer and wilder, and she gained prominent lion-like ears, a tail, and razor-sharp claws. After fully fusing with Lionel, her beastly traits became even more pronounced—her ears enlarged, her hair became almost mane-like, and her feet transformed into lion-like paws. Covered in patches of fur, Leone took on a fierce, untamed appearance, reflecting her unyielding spirit and predatory prowess in battle.

Personality

Leone was the embodiment of carefree confidence, always upbeat and cheerful with an infectious energy that made her a magnetic presence. Her laid-back nature often bordered on playful mischief, as she was notorious for her lack of ladylike manners—whether it was pulling Tatsumi into her chest for laughs, propping her feet on the table, or indulging in copious amounts of sake and alcohol. She embraced her role as the “big sister” of Night Raid, affectionately referring to herself as “Onee-san” or “Big Sis,” and was protective of the younger members, especially Tatsumi.

Beneath her fun-loving and often morally ambiguous exterior, Leone had a strong sense of justice and an unshakable intolerance for cruelty and corruption. When confronted with the wickedness of others, she could turn fierce and brutal, reserving her most vicious side for those who committed the worst atrocities. Despite her love for battle—something even Najenda pointed out as a habit she should temper—Leone’s sense of right and wrong was clear. She fought not just for survival, but to uphold the justice she deeply believed in.

History

Leone was raised in the slums of the Capital, where she worked in a massage parlor from a young age. Her life took a turn when she was scouted by the Revolutionary Army after she saved a group of slum children from nobles who were abusing them for entertainment. This act of defiance against the powerful led her to become a key member of Night Raid.

She was the first member of Night Raid to encounter Tatsumi at the start of the story. Leone approached him with an offer to help him join the Imperial Army in exchange for a favor. Taking full advantage of his naivety, she tricked him into treating her to dinner and drinks, then swindled him out of his money. However, her true identity was soon revealed when she reappeared as a Night Raid assassin. After the mission at Aria’s mansion, Leone recognized Tatsumi’s potential and decided to recruit him, a way of making up for her earlier con. Even though Tatsumi was devastated by the loss of his friends Sayo and Ieyasu, Leone tried to cheer him up, showing her lighthearted yet caring nature.

Leone fully merged with her Teigu.

Leone quickly introduced Tatsumi to the rest of Night Raid, and they formed a bond. Leone even acknowledged his potential when recommending him to Najenda. Leone’s straightforwardness shone through when Tatsumi naively claimed that they were assassins of justice—Leone bluntly responded, “Tatsumi, no matter how you dress it up, what we’re doing is murder.”

In the field, Leone’s missions were a testament to her strength and resilience. During a mission to the Capital, Leone and Tatsumi witnessed the brutal murder of a drugged prostitute, a girl Leone once knew from the streets. Together, they eliminated the gang responsible. Leone’s willingness to take on difficult missions, while showing small acts of kindness, like ensuring the girls were looked after, revealed her complex personality.

When Leone and Tatsumi were tasked with killing the Kobore Brothers, Leone demonstrated her seasoned professionalism, despite Tatsumi’s internal struggle with the morality of their actions. She comforted him, telling him that no amount of scrubbing would wash away the stains of the life they chose, yet encouraged him to move forward.

Leone’s daring nature came to the fore again when she was tasked with spying on Esdeath. Though she planned to strike, she retreated after sensing Esdeath’s overwhelming killing intent.

Leone’s true strength became apparent during the attack on Night Raid’s hideout by Team Stylish. Even after taking a dagger to the face, she returned to obliterate her attacker in one swift blow, revealing her Teigu’s regenerative abilities. This same strength was displayed again when she fought alongside Tatsumi against Danger Beasts, impressing him with her skill and teasing him that he was growing more like Bulat.

Later, during a fierce battle with Kurome, Leone lost her arm but used her regeneration powers to keep fighting. Even so, her resilience would be tested again during a mission to kill Bolic, where she was brutally tortured by Esdeath but managed to help secure Night Raid’s victory.

As the war escalated, Leone played a pivotal role in saving Tatsumi from execution, teaming up with Mine and Akame to fight against General Budo and Esdeath. Though their battles were fierce, Leone never lost her will to fight, even as the toll of war continued to weigh on her.

In the final attack on the Capital, Leone and Akame infiltrated the city, assassinating their targets. Leone then faced off against Minister Honest, revealing that he too possessed a Teigu. Despite being gravely injured and losing the power of her own Teigu, Leone survived her fall and pursued Honest underground, where she delivered a brutal and deserved end to him by ripping out his guts.

With the Capital liberated and her mission fulfilled, Leone, who had temporarily fused with her Teigu to survive, declined medical help. She chose her own moment to die, spending her final moments reminiscing about Tatsumi and enjoying one last night out. In the end, Leone passed away peacefully in the streets of the Capital, smiling as she remembered the life she lived and the friends she fought alongside.

Equipment and Skills

Leone wielded a Teigu called Lionel, a belt that, when activated, granted her enhanced speed, reflexes, strength, and regeneration, while also giving her animal-like traits. This Teigu significantly boosted her physical capabilities, allowing her to perform feats of superhuman strength and durability. It also heightened her senses, making her a formidable opponent in both direct combat and stealth operations.

Leone excelled in hand-to-hand combat, often using her raw strength to defeat enemies quickly. She was capable of killing skilled opponents with ease, and her experience as a brawler made her a versatile fighter. Her preference for sneak attacks allowed her to eliminate foes before they had a chance to retaliate, and her infiltration skills, demonstrated during various missions, suggested she was a master of stealth. Leone’s strength was shown when she killed three men with a single kick and took down a large Danger Beast with one blow.

When using Lionel‘s transformation, Leone became an even deadlier combatant. She was able to keep pace with Tatsumi in his Incursio armor, showing just how much her Teigu boosted her physical abilities. During their training missions, they fought Danger Beasts together, demonstrating her ability to hold her own against tough opponents.

Leone’s durability was exceptional, as seen in her battle against General Budo, where she survived multiple powerful thunderbolt strikes and was able to recover after only a brief moment. Her sixth sense for danger was also notable, as shown when she sensed an impending sneak attack from one of Dr. Stylish’s assassins. She caught a knife in her mouth, displaying both her sharp reflexes and toughness.

One of Lionel’s most impressive abilities was its regenerative power. Leone’s body could heal from severe injuries, such as the loss of her arm and breast, though the process took time. While this regeneration wasn’t instantaneous, it allowed her to survive wounds that would be fatal to most, making her a nearly indomitable force in battle.

Relationships

Night Raid
  • Tatsumi: Leone acts as an older sister figure to Tatsumi, who affectionately calls her “Nee-san.” She enjoys working alongside him and takes great pleasure in his company. Throughout the story, she expresses concern for Tatsumi, especially due to his kindness, which she believes makes him vulnerable. Over time, she seems to develop a soft spot for him, even teasingly stating that she will claim him as her man when he gets a little older. Leone often jokes around with him, frequently pushing his face into her chest or marking him with a lick on his ear. The two share a close bond, with their relationship being one of the strongest in Night Raid, characterized by frequent laughter and mutual understanding.

  • Akame: Leone and Akame share a friendly relationship, though it is often portrayed with a humorous touch. For instance, when Akame remarks on the difference in their weight, Leone punches her in response, adding to the lightheartedness of their bond. Despite the playful jabs, Leone views Akame as her best friend and frequently assumes the role of an older sibling, guiding and supporting her.

  • Lubbock: Lubbock is often caught trying to sneak a peek at Leone while she is bathing, though these attempts usually end with him being beaten up by Leone herself. Despite his flirtatious nature, the two maintain a friendly and teasing dynamic within the group.

  • Chelsea: During their brief time together, Leone and Chelsea formed a solid camaraderie. They even teamed up to playfully tease Tatsumi, asking him to decide whose swimsuit looked better. Though short-lived, their interactions reflect a mutual understanding and a shared sense of humor.

Trivia

    • The influence of Lionelle seems to have impacted Leone’s personality even when it’s not activated. She displays animal-like behaviors, such as marking Tatsumi as hers in a territorial manner, similar to a lioness claiming her territory.

    • By the end of the manga, Lionelle not only fused with Leone’s body but also mutated it, giving her an even more lion-like appearance that helped keep her alive despite severe injuries.

    • Leone had a mischievous side, often stating that she loved using sneak attacks to catch her enemies off guard, but she absolutely hated being on the receiving end of one.

    • Her measurements were 90-57-86, highlighting her athletic and curvy figure that she often used to her advantage.

    • Leone was unique within Night Raid, as she was the only member whose identity remained unknown to the Empire, allowing her to move more freely through the Capital.

    • In her original design concept, Leone looked quite different from her final appearance. Her hair was originally brown, she lacked her signature long bangs, and her Teigu form included much longer claws, giving her a more feral appearance.
