Kyotaro Azuma (東 京太郎, Azuma Kyōtarō) is the deuteragonist of the series. Operating under the alias Crow Head (クロウヘッド, Kurouheddo), he proclaims himself as an “emissary of justice” for espers, dedicating himself to their protection and advocacy. His origins are deeply tied to the mysterious Glowing Fish, as his parents were involved in the research project responsible for their creation. This connection plays a crucial role in shaping his motivations and actions throughout the series.
Appearance

Kyotaro Azuma is of average height, standing slightly taller than Rinka. He has short, messy black hair, thick sideburns, and dark brown eyes with noticeable lower eyelashes. Though his physique appears relatively standard, he possesses impressive strength, demonstrated by his ability to lift Rinka and her large-built father with ease, as well as single-handedly subduing a group of gangsters using only a baseball bat.
When operating as Crow Head, Azuma conceals his identity behind a crow-shaped mask. His attire typically consists of a black uniform paired with a white bow tie, giving him a distinct and mysterious appearance befitting his vigilante persona.
Personality
Kyotaro Azuma is an eccentric and lighthearted individual, often seen smiling and occasionally appearing somewhat slow on the uptake. Despite his quirky attitude, he is deeply caring and protective, especially toward Rinka, for whom he is willing to endure pain and make sacrifices. His calm and collected nature allows him to remain composed even in high-pressure situations, such as when Black Fist robbed the museum. He demonstrates quick thinking in moments of crisis, formulating strategies to escape dangerous scenarios while prioritizing the safety of those around him.
Azuma possesses a strong sense of justice, which led to the creation of his vigilante persona, Crow Head. As a self-proclaimed “emissary of justice,” he takes it upon himself to fight against evil in Tokyo, driven by his belief in the responsibility that comes with great power. His heroic ideals guide his actions, making him a formidable ally against wrongdoing. However, he holds a strict personal code, refusing to fight women, which often forces him to rely on Rinka when facing female adversaries.
History
Azuma’s parents were archaeologists who brought him along on an excavation mission in a small country off the coast of Russia. During their research, they worked closely with the Professor and his wife, forming a strong bond of friendship. The expedition led to the discovery of an artifact believed to be “the Ark”, a relic mentioned in the Bible. Upon uncovering the Ark, both the Professor, his wife, and Azuma’s parents mysteriously gained ESP (extrasensory perception), marking a turning point in their lives and research.
Azuma’s first encounter with Rinka occurred during a traumatic moment in his childhood. While being bullied by street thugs, he found himself surrounded, with bystanders unwilling to intervene. Just when it seemed hopeless, Rinka stepped in and saved him. This act of bravery left a profound impact on Azuma, who came to idolize Rinka as his hero, cementing his deep admiration and devotion to her from that day forward.
Plot
In Part One, Kyotaro Azuma encounters Rinka Urushiba while riding his bike and follows her to the mysterious Shining Fish, an event that grants supernatural abilities. Afterward, he approaches Rinka with the idea of becoming heroes together, urging her to join him as his partner in fighting injustice. As part of his enthusiasm, he even crafts a white Crow Head mask for Rinka, which she ultimately rejects.
Determined to investigate the origins of the Shining Fish, the two begin searching for clues when they witness a peculiar incident, a flying penguin named Peggi being kidnapped, along with a young girl. This moment sets them on a path toward uncovering deeper mysteries, forcing them to confront both the dangers and responsibilities of their newfound powers.
Relationships
Rinka Urushiba
His trusted partner and closest ally, whom he personally recruited into his fight against esper crime. Their relationship evolves from a mentor-student dynamic to a deep partnership built on trust and shared ideals.
Glowing Fish Project Scientists
Kyotaro’s parents were among those who studied the origins of ESP, making their work and disappearance central to his motivations.
Criminal Esper Organizations
He is the sworn enemy of rogue ESP users and groups who exploit their powers for personal gain, leading to constant confrontations with powerful adversaries.
Other Espers & Vigilantes
While he works primarily with Rinka, Kyotaro occasionally allies with other espers who share his vision of justice, though his self-righteous nature sometimes causes conflicts with others who do not share his black-and-white view of morality.
Legacy
Kyotaro Azuma’s journey as a vigilante and his pursuit of justice shape the very foundation of Tokyo ESP. As both a mentor and a warrior, he serves as a catalyst for Rinka’s growth, while his own past and struggles drive the larger conflict of ESP’s origins and morality. Whether viewed as a hero, an avenger, or a misguided idealist, his influence on the world of espers is undeniable, making him one of the most significant figures in the battle between good and evil within the series.
