Kyōko Toshinō

Kyōko Toshinō (歳納 京子, Toshinō Kyōko), also spelled Kyouko Toshinou, is one of the main characters in the YuruYuri manga and anime franchise. Known for her boisterous energy, otaku tendencies, and creative imagination, Kyōko is a second-year student at Nanamori Middle School and a founding member of the Amusement Club, a quirky organization formed in the former Tea Ceremony Club room. Her unpredictable antics and wild personality frequently drive the humor and chaos that define the series.

In addition to her prominent role in the main YuruYuri storyline, Kyōko also appears as a supporting character in the manga Reset! and serves as a main character in the isekai spin-off series Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken, showcasing her adaptability across genres and parodies.

Background

Appearance in anime

Kyōko attends Nanamori Middle School, where she and her friends form the Amusement Club, a group dedicated to having fun rather than any formal activity. She’s one of the original members, and her over-the-top behavior and enthusiasm often pull the rest of the club into ridiculous schemes and games. Outside of school, Kyōko is a talented dōjinshi artist and avid anime fan, particularly obsessed with the fictional magical girl series Mirakurun.

Despite her lazy student habits, she is remarkably intelligent and creative, often performing well in tests when she applies herself and excelling at artistic endeavors.

Appearance

Kyōko has blonde hair styled in a messy bob with small, pointed hair buns on either side of her head. Her eyes are blue, and she usually wears the standard Nanamori Middle School uniform, consisting of a white blouse with a black sailor collar, maroon skirt, and black knee socks. Her expressions are typically exaggerated and comedic, adding to her chaotic charm.

Personality

Kyōko is hyperactive, loud, mischievous, and often downright unpredictable. She’s constantly cracking jokes, teasing her friends, and inventing bizarre scenarios for the Amusement Club to act out. While her behavior can be selfish or annoying at times, her friends know that she has a kind heart and genuinely cares for them, especially Yui, whom she admires deeply.

She is also an unapologetic otaku, obsessing over anime, video games, and doujinshi. Her passion for fandom is genuine and often fuels her energy. Underneath her silliness lies a surprisingly responsible and mature side, which surfaces in rare moments when her friends truly need her.

Role in the Story

  • In YuruYuri
Kyōko is the heart of the Amusement Club, responsible for the majority of its chaos and comedy. Her interactions with Yui, Chinatsu, and Akari form the core of the group dynamics. She often clashes with Chinatsu, competes for Yui’s attention, and constantly forgets Akari exists serving as a meta-joke throughout the series. She is also the author and illustrator of the popular doujin series Majokko Mirakurun, which has an in-universe fanbase and leads to several parody episodes.

  • In Reset!
Kyōko appears in a supporting role, showing up with her characteristic energy and humor, contributing to the extended YuruYuri universe in a more toned-down setting.

  • In Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken
In this isekai parody, Kyōko is reincarnated along with other familiar characters in a fantasy world. She plays a leading role in this spin-off, bringing her usual enthusiasm and genre-savvy awareness into a new setting filled with RPG tropes and magical girl elements.

Relationships

Yui Funami
Yui is Kyōko’s best friend and the one who most often keeps her in check. Kyōko harbors a strong admiration (and possibly romantic feelings) for Yui, often clinging to her and seeking her approval.

Chinatsu Yoshikawa
Kyōko is infatuated with Chinatsu due to her resemblance to a magical girl character, but their relationship is mostly one-sided. Chinatsu finds Kyōko irritating and tends to reject her advances sometimes violently.

Akari Akaza
Though Akari is technically the main character, Kyōko constantly overshadows her to the point of rendering her invisible. While the running gag is that Kyōko forgets Akari exists, she still sees her as a friend and important part of the group.

Trivia

    • Kyōko’s favorite anime is Majokko Mirakurun, and she creates doujinshi under a pen name.
      • Despite her lazy image, she ranks high academically when she puts in the effort.
      • Kyōko is known for breaking the fourth wall, often referencing anime clichés and comedic tropes directly.
      • Her isekai reincarnation in Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken parodies her energetic nature by amplifying her role in absurd fantasy scenarios.

    Legacy

      • Kyōko Toshinō is the uncontested comedic engine of YuruYuri, injecting every scene she’s in with energy, chaos, and heart. Her over-the-top antics are balanced by brief but poignant moments of friendship and care, making her both hilarious and endearing. As a character who blends otaku culture with slapstick and genuine emotion, she has become one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in slice-of-life anime comedy.
        • Her continued appearances in spin-offs like Reset! and Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken demonstrate her lasting popularity and versatility as a character across genres from school life to fantasy parody.
