Kurumu Kurono (黒乃 胡夢, Kurono Kurumu) is a supporting protagonist in the Rosario + Vampire series. A third-year student at Yōkai Academy, Kurumu is a succubus, a species known for their charm and seduction abilities. Initially introduced as a romantic rival to Moka Akashiya, Kurumu sets her sights on Tsukune Aono, hoping to win his affection and prove herself more desirable. Though she first appears to be manipulative and flirtatious, Kurumu’s character later reveals depth, loyalty, and genuine love for Tsukune, ultimately leading her to become a valued member of the Newspaper Club and a close friend to the other heroines.
Appearance

Appearance in Anime
Kurumu Kurono bears a striking resemblance to her mother, Ageha Kurono, sharing many of her physical features. She has shoulder-length, ocean-blue hair, which she typically wears tied in a loose ponytail and adorned with a purple maid-style headband featuring a gold star on the left side. Her deep purple eyes, long black eyelashes, and notably large breasts are prominent features of her appearance something she takes great pride in. Despite her voluptuous figure, Kurumu is relatively petite, standing at around five feet tall.
Her standard outfit consists of a long-sleeved white blouse with a red bow tie, a pale yellow vest, and a short, pleated miniskirt resembling the Yōkai Academy uniform. She also wears white, baggy seifuku-style socks and plain black dress shoes, adding to her schoolgirl aesthetic. In the manga, her outfit evolves in Season II, shifting to a short-sleeved shirt and a straighter hairstyle, in contrast to the curlier hair and long sleeves she had in Season I.
Although she doesn’t wear the school’s full official uniform characterized by a green blazer and matching plaid skirt Kurumu’s ensemble remains schoolgirl-inspired, particularly in her choice of footwear and top styling.
In her succubus form, Kurumu undergoes a more dramatic transformation. She sprouts large bat-like wings from her back, a pointed tail, and develops long, claw-like fingernails, all of which emphasize her supernatural seduction-based abilities.
Personality
As a succubus, Kurumu Kurono possesses the natural ability to charm and seduce men, a power she is well aware of and initially uses to gain popularity among the male students of Yōkai Academy. However, her views on love begin to change after she meets Tsukune Aono, who shows her kindness and sincerity even after resisting her seductive allure. Touched by his actions especially when he protects her from a furious Inner Moka, Kurumu falls genuinely in love with him and vows to win his affection without relying on her succubus powers.
Kurumu is confident, flirtatious, and often bold in her attempts to win Tsukune’s heart, frequently using her beauty to tease and challenge her romantic rivals. While she tends to be competitive and teasing, especially toward girls like Mizore Shirayuki, she is notably less harsh toward Moka Akashiya, though she still jealously interrupts their private moments. Despite her confidence, Kurumu is sensitive when others comment on her more sincere traits. For example, when Kokoa Shuzen remarks on her pure heart unusual for a succubus Kurumu blushes, indicating embarrassment at being seen as soft or idealistic.
Although she can come across as childish, self-centered, or overly flirtatious at first glance, Kurumu is deeply compassionate and emotionally mature. She truly values her friendships, showing unwavering loyalty and courage. Her care for her companions often overrides her romantic ambitions. This is especially evident in her willingness to sacrifice her own happiness and safety for others: she comforts Mizore during a crisis, dives into Moka’s subconscious to protect her and Tsukune, and even revives Tsukune when he is mentally lost in his inner world.
Kurumu sees Tsukune and Moka as her two most important people. Although her love for Tsukune remains unrequited, she never harbors resentment toward Moka. Despite wishing she could hate her romantic rival, Kurumu admits that she cannot, recognizing Moka’s deep bond with Tsukune and cherishing their friendship too much to let jealousy consume her.
In addition to her emotional intelligence, Kurumu is also shown to be perceptive and insightful. She is one of the few characters to see through the manipulative façade of Hokuto, long before others recognize the threat. In the anime adaptation, she is also portrayed as a talented and confident singer, further highlighting her expressive and passionate nature.
History
Kurumu Kurono is first introduced as a student at Yōkai Academy, where she quickly takes an interest in Tsukune Aono due to his distinctive human scent though she is unaware at first that he is, in fact, a human. Initially, Kurumu presents herself as a sweet and flirtatious girl, attempting to seduce Tsukune by pressing her chest against him and using her natural charm. She activates her succubus power, Allure, which allows her to entrance men through eye contact. Her early behavior is overtly suggestive, often teasing Tsukune and flaunting her appearance to gain his affection.
Kurumu’s true intentions are revealed during a confrontation with Moka Akashiya, where she openly declares her identity as a succubus. She boasts about her plan to enslave the entire male student body and create a personal harem something she refers to as “Operation: Yōkai Harem” in the Shonen Jump Advanced manga. Kurumu states that her plan was foolproof, but everything changed when Moka arrived and became the center of male attention, undermining her charm-based dominance. This suggests that Kurumu had been a student at Yōkai Academy prior to Moka’s enrollment.
Following her confrontation with Moka, Kurumu attempts to win Tsukune over again using Allure, resulting in him briefly falling under her spell and unintentionally hurting Moka with insensitive words. Feeling guilty, Tsukune tries to apologize, only to be further enticed by Kurumu’s seduction. Just as she pushes Tsukune’s face into her chest, he regains clarity and asserts that Moka is important to him, resisting Kurumu’s power.
Enraged by the rejection, Kurumu transforms into her true succubus form, complete with wings, claws, and a tail, and attacks Tsukune. However, Moka intervenes, removing her Rosario Cross to reveal Inner Moka, her powerful vampiric self. Inner Moka threatens Kurumu with brutal retaliation, warning her of the consequences of her aggression. At this moment, Tsukune steps in to protect Kurumu, stopping Moka from harming her further.
Moved by Tsukune’s unexpected kindness and bravery even after she had tried to manipulate him Kurumu falls genuinely in love with him. This marks a turning point in her character arc. No longer fixated on seduction or manipulation, Kurumu begins to pursue Tsukune with honest emotions, eventually becoming one of the core members of the Newspaper Club and a loyal friend and ally to Tsukune and the other girls, including Yukari Sendo, Mizore Shirayuki, and Ruby Tōjō, who also develop feelings for him.
Etymology
The name Kurumu (胡夢) is composed of the kanji 胡 (kuru), which can mean “barbarian” or “foreign,” and 夢 (mu), meaning “dream” or “vision.” Together, the name can be loosely interpreted as “foreign dream” or “barbarian dream,” a fitting reflection of her supernatural origin as a succubus—an alluring creature often portrayed as both mysterious and otherworldly.
Her surname, Kurono (黒乃), combines 黒 (kuro), meaning “black,” and 乃 (no), a possessive particle often translated as “of” or “from.” The full surname can be interpreted as “of black” or “from black,” which may symbolize her seductive and enigmatic nature, as well as her connection to darkness and allure typical of succubi in mythology.
Relationships
Tsukune Aono
Kurumu initially targets Tsukune Aono as part of her plan to prove her superiority over Moka Akashiya, who had unintentionally ruined her scheme to enchant the entire male population at Yōkai Academy. Determined to reclaim her dominance, Kurumu sets out to seduce Tsukune. However, due to his growing feelings for Moka, Tsukune resists her advances. Angered by her failure, Kurumu attempts to attack him, but is stopped by Moka. During the confrontation, Tsukune protects Kurumu from Inner Moka’s wrath, deeply moving her. From that moment on, she believes Tsukune is her “mate of fate” and resolves to win his love through genuine emotion rather than her succubus abilities.
Despite her ongoing efforts, Kurumu ultimately comes to accept that Tsukune’s heart belongs to Moka. Rather than give up completely, she attempts to find fulfillment through other means such as entering Tsukune’s dreams and rewriting them into romantic fantasies where they are married and have a child together. This illustrates the succubus’s ability to survive on even superficial love, though it also reveals Kurumu’s underlying sadness and unrequited devotion.
Ageha Kurono
Ageha is Kurumu’s mother, and the two share a strong physical resemblance. Ageha’s hair is longer and wavier compared to Kurumu’s shorter, straighter style, which Kurumu accessorizes with a headband. Although their interactions are limited, Ageha serves as a figure of influence, representing the seductive and assertive qualities typical of succubi, which Kurumu both embraces and seeks to transcend in her pursuit of honest love.
Moka Akashiya
Kurumu has a complicated relationship with Moka Akashiya, shaped by both rivalry and underlying friendship. While the two once shared a more amicable bond, their mutual love for Tsukune has created significant tension. Kurumu often teases Moka and competes aggressively for Tsukune’s attention, which causes emotional strain. Moka, while usually composed, becomes visibly irritated and disheartened by Kurumu’s provocations, particularly when they interfere with her time with Tsukune. Despite their differences, Kurumu continues to care deeply for Moka, and their interactions fluctuate between rivalry and sisterly affection as the series progresses.
