Kurosu Ouma

Kurosu Ouma (桜満 玄周, Ōma Kurosu) was the father of Mana Ouma and Shu Ouma, the main protagonist of Guilty Crown. He was a scientist who played a key role in the discovery of the Void Genome, identifying it as an inhibitor of the Apocalypse Virus. His research and findings were crucial to the events surrounding the virus outbreak. Additionally, he had some connection to Scrooge and Carol, though the nature of this relationship remains largely unexplored.

Kurosu Ouma dozing off during his research

Kurosu Ouma was intelligent, resourceful, and hardworking, dedicating most of his time to his research. However, his strong sense of self-sufficiency made him socially awkward and not particularly skilled at interacting with others. Aware of his own shortcomings in forming connections, he named his son Shu Ouma, explaining that the name meant “group”, possibly hoping Shu would grow up to be more sociable and connected to others.

Despite his brilliance, Kurosu was often portrayed as absentminded and blunt in his interactions. However, his second wife, Haruka Ouma, described him as “an interesting man,” suggesting that his quirks made him unique and somewhat endearing.

Appearance

Kurosu Ouma was a tall man with brown hair and brown eyes. He often had an unshaven, slightly messy beard, likely due to being preoccupied with his research. He was usually seen wearing a white laboratory coat and glasses, reflecting his role as a dedicated scientist.

Background

Kurosu was an expert in virology and genetics, dedicating his life to studying the Apocalypse Virus. He worked alongside Shuichiro Keido, his former friend and fellow scientist, in leading research efforts on the virus. His work ultimately led to the discovery of the Void Genome, which was developed as a countermeasure against the Apocalypse Virus.

He was first married to Saeko Shijou, but she tragically passed away during Shu Ouma’s birth. Following her death, he later married Haruka Ouma, who became Shu’s stepmother.

Kurosu was killed during the Lost Christmas incident, a major catastrophe that reshaped the world of Guilty Crown. It was later revealed that Shuichiro Keido was responsible for his murder, motivated by deep-seated hatred and personal betrayal.

Role in the Story

Though Kurosu died before the main events of Guilty Crown, his research, legacy, and relationships continued to influence the story’s major developments. His contributions to the Void Genome and Apocalypse Virus research set the foundation for Shu Ouma’s abilities and struggles.

Throughout the series, it is revealed that:

  • He was one of the leading scientists in Apocalypse Virus research.
  • His Void Genome discovery played a crucial role in the resistance against the virus.
  • His relationship with Shuichiro Keido deteriorated, leading to Keido betraying and killing him.
  • He left a lasting impact on Shu Ouma, as Shu struggles with his identity and his father’s legacy.

Etymology

The name Kurosu (玄周) combines “kuro” (玄), meaning “mysterious” or “occult”, and “su” (周), though its specific meaning is unclear. His surname, Ouma (桜満), is composed of “ou” (桜), meaning “cherry blossom”, and “ma” (満), which means “fullness” or “satisfaction.”
