Krul Tepes

Krul Tepes (クルル・ツェペシ, Kururu Tsepeshi) is a third progenitor among the vampires and the vampire queen of Japan in the anime and manga series Seraph of the End (Owari no Seraph). A secondary major character, Krul plays a pivotal role in the story by turning Mikaela Hyakuya into a vampire and orchestrating plans to undermine human forces, particularly the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. As a high-ranking member of the Progenitor Council, Krul is a powerful and enigmatic figure with her own hidden motives.

Appearance in Manga

Krul Tepes has the appearance of a preteen girl with distinct, striking features that make her stand out. She has calf-length, rosy pink hair, which is partially styled into two pigtails secured with black hairpieces that resemble bat wings. The black hairpieces are connected by a black headband, and she has small black horns at either temple, adding to her vampire-like appearance. Her red eyes are large, sharp, and somewhat slanted, and like all vampires, she has fangs and pointed ears.

Her attire is elaborate and distinctive, giving off an air of aristocracy and elegance. She wears a short, frilly black dress with a layered skirt, where the top layer is white ruffles over black ruffles. The top of the dress features a raindrop-shaped opening over her chest, with crossed straps on either side that lead up to her neck. The back of the dress is open, with two x-shaped stitches crossing at her waist to cinch it. On either side of the front of the dress, there are pink strips that end with red bows above the ruffles. Five gold buttons are distributed in a parallel vertical design on either side between the pink strips.

Krul’s outfit is further adorned with a lace white collar that extends over her collarbones, bound by a pink ribbon with a large bow on the right side of her neck. The collar also features a golden oval decoration at the center with trailing ribbons that reach down to her hips.

Her sleeves are detached and loose, puffing up at the shoulders and extending past her hands, becoming wider toward the end. The sleeves are adorned with two gold buttons at the cuff, with a black ribbon tied into a bow at the outermost sides of the sleeves, and the tails of the ribbon reach the length of the sleeves. White lace frills decorate the tops of the sleeves, with longer white frills hanging beneath them. The white frills extend to the puffed area of the sleeves under the ribbons.

Underneath the loose sleeves, Krul wears a pair of tight black gloves that reach her knuckles. Each glove has a pair of pink stripes running down from the knuckles to the end of the glove, only visible when the sleeves are slid back.

She wears tall black boots that initially fold under her knees, but when she unleashes her power, they unfold to reach mid-thigh, with a slit extending up to each knee. The boots feature tall golden stilettos, giving her an imposing and regal appearance. Occasionally, Krul is seen wearing a black cloak under her skirt, which extends down to her ankles and is split down the center with a pink inner lining.

In the anime, Krul’s hair is depicted as more distinctly pink than in the manga, with darker pink details on her ribbons and clothing. Her boots are often shown as flat rather than stilettos, and occasionally, her hair is illustrated with a third ponytail at the back, as opposed to being styled down like in the manga.

Personality

Krul Tepes is an efficient and commanding leader, particularly skilled at orchestrating plans to ensure the survival of her vampire race. She is highly pragmatic and ensures that the vampires maintain a steady blood supply by retrieving human children, using them as resources to feed her kind. Krul is also known for her decisiveness, issuing orders without hesitation and expecting them to be followed without question. However, when her authority is challenged, she tends to resort to physical violence, using force as a quick solution to disputes. While this method is effective in some cases, it also has its drawbacks, as it sometimes prevents her from fully considering the long-term consequences of her actions. For example, after beating Ferid Bathory into submission, she allowed him to leave, which later backfired when he used the knowledge he gained to manipulate her. Similarly, she threatened Lest Karr without fully understanding the implications of his words, which led to an eventual loss of her position when Ferid managed to outmaneuver her.

Krul is not afraid to engage in deception, especially when it suits her plans. She lied to the Progenitor Council about the status of the children who carry the Seraph gene, keeping some of them alive for her own personal agenda. She is also shown to be willing to manipulate situations for the sake of her grand designs, such as sending Mika on a secret mission to further her ambitions, while also dealing with external threats like the Japanese Imperial Demon Army by eliminating them.

Despite her ruthless and pragmatic nature, Krul has a more personal and affectionate side. She cares deeply for Mika, showing a level of tenderness and patience toward him that contrasts with her usual harsh demeanor. She doesn’t mind when Mika drinks directly from her, and she takes time to help him understand important matters, particularly his vampiric nature. Krul also shows her concern for Mika’s survival by preparing her own blood for him to feed on, which further underscores the bond they share. Unlike many vampires, Krul’s interests are not limited to bloodlust; she has a genuine attachment to those she considers close, especially Mika, and her actions reflect this unique blend of practicality and affection.

Role in the Story

Krul saves Mikaela from death after Ferid Bathory’s massacre by turning him into a vampire. While this act preserves Mika’s life, it also binds him to Krul’s plans, as she sees potential in him as both an ally and a pawn.

As a third progenitor, Krul is one of the most powerful vampires in existence and a key figure in the Progenitor Council. She wields significant influence, often dictating strategies against human forces and other threats to vampire supremacy.

Krul leads efforts to destroy human organizations like the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, which she deems a major threat to vampire dominance. Her strategies are driven by both self-preservation and a desire to maintain control over the balance of power.

Beyond her overt actions, Krul harbors secret motives, including her ties to the Seraph of the End experiments. Her involvement in these schemes positions her as a central figure in the series’ overarching conflict.

Powers and Abilities

Krul Tepes, as a vampire of the Third Progenitor rank, possesses a range of formidable abilities that make her an extremely powerful and dangerous figure in the world of Seraph of the End.

Immortality
As a vampire, Krul is immortal and cannot be killed by conventional means. Her regenerative abilities ensure that she heals rapidly from wounds that would otherwise be fatal to humans. This immortality allows her to remain a powerful force over the centuries.

Superhuman Strength
Krul’s physical strength is far beyond that of humans and many other vampires. This is evident when she easily defeats Ferid Bathory, a Seventh Progenitor, showing that her strength surpasses that of lower-tier vampires. With just a swing of her arm, Krul can break through the floor of a room, demonstrating her immense raw power. Her physical strength, combined with her supernatural speed, allows her to overpower most opponents in hand-to-hand combat, even those armed with weapons.

Supernatural Speed
In addition to her strength, Krul possesses incredible speed that rivals her strength. She can move quickly enough to outmaneuver enemies, and her agility allows her to act decisively in combat situations, striking before her opponents can react.

Regeneration
As a vampire, Krul is capable of rapid physical regeneration. She can heal from wounds and injuries that would incapacitate or kill regular humans, making her a resilient and nearly unstoppable adversary. Her regenerative abilities allow her to recover swiftly from even severe damage.

Vampire Transformation
Being a noble vampire, Krul has the ability to turn humans into vampires. This privilege, as a Third Progenitor, is granted to her due to her rank. She exercised this ability when she turned Mika into a vampire, solidifying her bond with him and ensuring his survival after he became one of the undead.

Blood Manipulation
Like many powerful vampires, Krul can likely manipulate her blood in various ways, though this ability is not as prominently showcased as her other powers. However, her act of preparing her blood for Mika and allowing him to drink from her further suggests that she can control the flow and distribution of her blood for specific purposes, such as sustaining Mika’s life.

Leadership and Command
Krul’s status as a Third Progenitor and her position as a leader among the vampire nobility grant her the ability to issue commands and expect them to be obeyed. She has a commanding presence, and even the lower-tier vampires and other progenitors recognize her authority.

Krul Tepes is a powerful and cunning vampire, and her abilities reflect her high rank and status within the vampire hierarchy. Despite her immense power, her relationship with Mika and her personal connections add a layer of complexity to her character, as she is willing to take actions not only for power and control but also for the protection of those she cares about.

Relationships

Mikaela Hyakuya
Krul views Mika as a valuable asset and treats him with a degree of care unusual for vampires. While she often uses him for her plans, her concern for his well-being hints at a more personal attachment.

Ferid Bathory
Krul and Ferid share a tense and manipulative relationship. While they are both high-ranking vampires, their goals and methods often conflict, leading to mutual distrust and underlying rivalry.

Progenitor Council
Krul’s position as a third progenitor places her among the elite ruling vampires. Her interactions with the council often involve power plays and political intrigue, showcasing her cunning and ambition.

Legacy

Krul Tepes is a central figure in Seraph of the End, embodying the duality of cruelty and compassion within the vampire hierarchy. Her actions and hidden motives drive much of the series’ conflict, particularly her ties to Mikaela and the Seraph of the End experiments. As a powerful and enigmatic character, Krul’s influence on the story and her layered personality make her a standout figure in the series’ rich and dynamic narrative.

Trivia

    • Despite her ruthlessness, Krul’s occasional moments of compassion, particularly toward Mika, add depth and complexity to her character.
    • Her dislike for Ferid Bathory stems from his impulsive actions and ambition, which often conflict with her carefully laid plans.
