Komari Kamikita

Komari Kamikita (神北 小毬, Kamikita Komari) is a cheerful and optimistic student in Riki Naoe’s class and a key member of the Little Busters! series. She becomes the sixth member to join the Little Busters group. Komari is believed to be the granddaughter of Kojirou Kamikita and the younger sister of Takuya Kamikita, both of whom are significant figures in her past.

Appearance in Anime

Komari is known for her cheerful, childlike nature. She has a deep fondness for fairy tales, picture books, sweets, and frilly clothing, which reflect her innocent and whimsical view of the world. Clumsy and impulsive, she often acts without thinking, yet her optimistic and friendly nature allows her to get along easily with others. Komari is sweet, caring, and deeply kind, traits that endear her to many of her peers and especially to the elderly residents at the care center where she volunteers.

Beneath her bright and carefree exterior, however, lies a hidden emotional scar. Komari was deeply traumatized by the death of her older brother, Takuya. As someone who detests death and sad endings, the experience had a lasting impact on her. One of the earliest signs of this aversion was when she cried at the tragic ending of The Little Match Girl, a story her brother once read to her. After his death, Komari developed post-traumatic stress disorder, which resurfaces when she witnesses death or blood. These triggers cause her to retreat into a prolonged state of denial and depression, during which she may forget what happened, reject the truth, or mistake others for her brother. Although she eventually begins to heal, her emotional struggles highlight the contrast between her joyful personality and the grief she tries to suppress.

Appearance

Komari has chin-length dark blonde hair, which she styles into two half-twintails secured with red ribbons adorned with star-shaped charms, symbolizing “wishes.” She has bright blue eyes and a soft, expressive face that complements her upbeat personality.

Her school uniform differs slightly from those worn by the other girls at her school. In addition to the standard attire, Komari wears a yellow jumper over her uniform, making her stand out visually.

Outside of school, Komari is often seen in a black-and-white Lolita-style dress, characterized by frills, lace, and decorative ribbons. She continues to wear her signature red-and-white hair ribbons with this outfit, keeping her half-twintail style. The ensemble includes black stockings with white frills at the top and black platform shoes. When standing next to Rin Natsume, Komari appears about half a head taller and is slightly older than her.

Biography

Komari Kamikita is known for her academic performance and surprising athletic potential, despite her physical frailty and lack of experience in sports. This is highlighted when she manages to throw accurate and moderately powerful pitches after only a brief demonstration by Kyousuke Natsume, showing her ability to quickly learn and adapt.

In her route in the Little Busters! visual novel, Komari struggles to recover lost memories of her older brother, Takuya Kamikita. As Riki Naoe assists her in caring for elderly individuals, he begins to form a connection with Kojirou Kamikita, Komari’s presumed grandfather. Kojirou subtly reveals to Riki that Takuya, whom Komari believes is still alive, had in fact passed away.

A pivotal moment occurs when Riki and Komari encounter a dying kitten in the rain. Despite Riki’s efforts to shield it, the kitten dies, triggering Komari’s repressed trauma and a sudden onset of depression. In an attempt to comfort her, Riki creates a picture book, which leads Komari to believe that Riki is her brother. After consulting Kojirou, Riki tells Komari the truth about Takuya’s death, encouraging her to face reality. With his help, Komari ultimately comes to terms with her loss and begins to heal emotionally.

In Refrain, during Rin Natsume’s final dream when she regains her memories, she rushes to Komari. Komari gives Rin her hair ornament and quietly vanishes, encouraging Rin to remain strong.

Relationships

  • Takuya Kamikita: Komari shared a deep bond with her older brother, Takuya. His illness and eventual death had a profound effect on her, leading to long-lasting emotional trauma. In response to the pain of his loss, Komari began to focus solely on happiness, using it as a way to shield herself from the sorrow she never wanted to experience again.

  • Kojirou Kamikita: Riki looks up to Kyousuke as a role model and older brother figure. Kyousuke is instrumental in Riki’s emotional development, guiding him through the challenges of adolescence and encouraging him to become more independent. Their bond is central to the series, especially in Refrain, where Kyousuke steps aside so Riki can assume the role of a leader.

  • Rin Natsume: Rin is Komari’s best friend. The two share a close and supportive friendship, often spending time together during their daily school life. Their bond is also highlighted in Refrain, where Komari offers Rin words of encouragement and a keepsake before fading from the dream world.
