Kohachi Inugami

Kohachi Inugami (隠神 鼓八千, Inugami Kohachi) is a Bake-danuki (supernatural tanuki) and the head of a Kemono detective agency based in Tokyo in the Kemono Jihen series. As a mediator between humans and Kemono, he investigates cases involving supernatural phenomena. During one of his missions, Inugami encounters Kabane Kusaka and, recognizing the boy’s potential, brings him back to Tokyo to join the agency. He offers Kabane a place to stay and promises to help him uncover the truth about his missing parents.

Appearance

Inugami is a tall, well-built man with shoulder-length, fluffy yellow hair. The front portion of his hair falls to the right, partially obscuring his right eye. He has distinct droopy eyes that give him a calm and laid-back expression.

His usual outfit consists of a beige suit vest worn over a dark green, long-sleeved shirt, complemented by a green tie. He pairs this with matching beige pants and brown oxford shoes. At times, he is also seen wearing a beige blazer, a fedora hat, and oval-shaped glasses with rimless dark green lenses accessories that add to his composed and refined appearance.

In his tanuki form, Inugami’s fur is a mix of brown and yellow, reflecting elements of his human form’s color scheme.

Personality

Kohachi Inugami is known for his calm and composed nature, remaining level-headed even in high-stress or dangerous situations. He rarely loses his temper and often finds ways to turn situations to his advantage through intelligence, observation, and adaptability. Despite his laid-back and easygoing attitude, Inugami is highly responsible, particularly when it comes to the well-being of the children in his care.

As the head of the Inugami Detective Agency, he approaches each case with a practical mindset, resolving issues with efficiency and discretion. He avoids unnecessary confrontation but will step in decisively when needed especially to correct behavior or protect those he considers family. He plays a mentorship role for Kabane, Shiki, and Akira, offering guidance while encouraging their independence and personal growth.

Although generally tolerant even of difficult individuals like Mihai Inugami’s patience has limits, especially when the safety of his team is compromised. When provoked, his rare displays of anger can be formidable. Beneath his composed surface lies a strong protective instinct, and those who pose a threat to his found family quickly discover the extent of his loyalty and strength.

Background

Kohachi Inugami is a Bake-danuki, a supernatural tanuki with the ability to take on human form. While much of his early life remains shrouded in mystery, it is known that he has long worked as a mediator between humans and Kemono, using his abilities and knowledge to maintain balance and resolve conflicts involving the supernatural.

Inugami eventually established the Inugami Detective Agency in Tokyo, a private organization dedicated to investigating Kemono-related incidents. Through this agency, he helps both humans and Kemono navigate the complexities of their intertwined worlds. His office also serves as a safe haven for young hybrids and displaced Kemono, including Kabane Kusaka, Shiki Tademaru, and Akira. Acting as both guardian and mentor, Inugami offers them shelter, employment, and guidance as they learn to coexist with their dual identities.

His decision to take in Kabane stems not only from a professional interest in the boy’s mysterious background and possession of the Lifestone but also from a personal sense of duty to protect and nurture those who are lost or rejected by society.

Powers & Abilities

As a powerful Bake-danuki, Inugami possesses a wide range of supernatural abilities typical of his species, including shapeshifting, illusion creation, and advanced transformation techniques. His versatility in combat and utility makes him a formidable figure in both investigations and battle.

  • Illusions: Inugami can create illusions by transforming one object into an exact replica of another. These illusions maintain roughly the same mass as the original object and can persist indefinitely.
  • Transformation: Tanuki are naturally adept at transformation, and Inugami excels in this field. He can manipulate and alter parts of his body at will, including full-body transformations. His skills extend to taking on entirely different forms, such as that of a bird.
  • Shapeshifting: Inugami can transform into a standard tanuki or enlarge himself into a tanuki form that surpasses the size of an average human. His physical strength increases significantly in this larger form.
  • Object Creation: Inugami is capable of producing objects from his body. For example, he can materialize a functional gun from his hand. While the gun is able to fire, the nature of the ammunition remains unknown.
  • Skin Hardening: He can harden his skin into a metallic form, greatly increasing his durability. However, the process requires time, and the exact duration needed to cover his entire body in metal is unclear.
  • Eight Thousand Drums (八千大鼓, Hassen Daiko): One of Inugami’s most powerful techniques, this move involves creating multiple identical copies of an object and causing them to explode simultaneously. The resulting chain of explosions unleashes large-scale destruction across a wide area.
  • Etymology

Kohachi’s given name 鼓八千 is composed of the kanji 鼓 (ko, “drum”), 八 (ha, “eight”), and 千 (chi, “thousand”), which together translate to “eight thousand drums.”

His surname 隠神 consists of 隠 (inu, “conceal” or “hidden”) and 神 (kami/gami, “god”), forming the meaning “hidden god.”
