Koenma’s first major decision as ruler was to enlist Yusuke Urameshi as a Spirit Detective after his untimely death and subsequent resurrection. Though initially doubtful of Yusuke’s abilities, Koenma grew to trust and respect him, often relying on Yusuke and his team to resolve critical conflicts.
