Appearance in Anime

Kikyō Kushida is widely regarded as one of Class 1-D’s most popular students, projecting a cheerful and friendly personality. She actively seeks to befriend everyone, not just within her class but across different student groups, as seen when she extended her friendship to Honami Ichinose of Class 1-B. On the surface, she appears to be a kind, sociable, and well-intentioned individual who aims to build trust with her peers. However, beneath this bubbly façade, Kikyō harbors a deeply manipulative, self-serving, and vindictive nature, making her one of the most deceptive characters in the series.

Kikyō’s true personality is one of jealousy, ambition, and a relentless desire for recognition. She craves attention and validation, growing resentful of anyone who stands in her way. If she feels that her reputation is threatened, she does not hesitate to resort to blackmail, deceit, or sabotage. Her hatred for Suzune Horikita stems from the latter’s lack of a hidden side, making her an enigma that Kikyō cannot fully manipulate. In a private conversation with Kiyotaka Ayanokōji, she confessed that her deepest desire is to be the one person everyone trusts with their secrets because it gives her a thrill and a sense of superiority over others. However, if that trust is lost, she can become ruthless, as demonstrated by her actions in middle school.

During an outburst in Volume 1, Kiyotaka accidentally overheard her true nature, witnessing her explosive hatred toward Suzune. She immediately threatened him, falsely grabbing his hand and pressing it against her chest to leave fingerprints, stating that if he ever revealed her secret, she would accuse him of sexual assault. Her ability to switch between hostility and charm within seconds left Kiyotaka questioning which version of her personality was genuine. While she blackmailed him into silence, she still maintained an open and friendly attitude toward him afterward. Kiyotaka, however, remained extremely wary of her, recognizing the danger she posed.

Kikyō’s manipulative tendencies extend beyond simple deception. In middle school, she intentionally caused a major conflict within her class by exposing everyone’s darkest secrets, similar to what she later attempted in Advanced Nurturing High School. To achieve her goals, she is willing to double-cross her allies, betray her own class, and side with the strongest force, as long as it benefits her survival. Despite this, she sometimes acts out of sheer resentment rather than logical self-preservation, making her unstable and unpredictable.

Kikyō meticulously plans her interactions, ensuring that she maintains her carefully crafted image. According to a Drama CD, she even prepares detailed to-do lists for social gatherings, deciding in advance which topics to discuss, which words to use, and which sentences she must say to avoid exposing weaknesses that others could exploit. She believes that by maintaining strict control over her behavior, she can prevent anyone from gossiping behind her back or challenging her reputation.

Her violent tendencies are further explored in the light novel, where it is revealed that she hated Kiyotaka from the moment they met for reasons yet to be disclosed. Her interactions with him shift over time, initially marked by fear and caution, but later developing into a confused sense of attraction, as she begins blushing and even hitting her own head to process her emotions toward him.

Kikyō’s biggest weakness is her inability to maintain control once she loses influence. After Kiyotaka exposed her true nature to the class, she attempted to destroy Class 1-D from within by revealing all the secrets entrusted to her, much like she did in middle school. Seeing nothing left to lose, she sought entertainment in watching her classmates suffer from her betrayals. However, when Suzune prevented her expulsion, she was left frustrated and humiliated, breaking down in tears.

Following this incident, Kikyō isolated herself in her dorm, believing that she no longer had a place within the class. When she eventually returned, she apologized to Wang, Shinohara, and Matsushita for exposing their secrets, though her words lacked sincerity. Realizing that her only way to survive was to contribute to Class 1-D’s success, she reluctantly shifted her focus toward earning debts from her classmates, ensuring they would owe her favors in return.

Despite her cold and manipulative nature, she has shown genuine fear toward Kiyotaka and Ichika Amasawa, viewing them as abnormal individuals she cannot fully understand or control. Her interactions with Kiyotaka evolved into an unsettling fixation, marking a significant shift in her character as she struggled to process her emotions toward him.

Abilities

Academic Abilities
Kikyō Kushida possesses above-average academic abilities, though she is not among the top-performing students in her class. She is proficient enough to maintain decent grades, allowing her to navigate through Advanced Nurturing High School without significant difficulty. However, her true strength lies in manipulation, as she has successfully convinced many students that she is a benevolent and trustworthy presence despite her hidden spiteful and self-serving nature.

Additionally, she boasts one of the highest social contribution scores in the school, further reinforcing her fabricated image as a charitable and kind-hearted student. This reflects her ability to deceive not just her classmates but also the school faculty, making her appear as a valuable and socially engaged student, when in reality, her actions are strategically motivated for personal gain rather than genuine goodwill.

Etymology

The name Kikyō (桔梗) translates to “Chinese bellflower,” a flower that traditionally symbolizes honesty, gratitude, and perseverance. This meaning contrasts sharply with Kikyō Kushida’s true personality, as she hides her manipulative and spiteful nature behind a carefully crafted façade of kindness and charm.

Her surname, Kushida (櫛田), is composed of the kanji 櫛 (kushi), meaning “comb,” and 田 (ta/da), meaning “field” or “rice paddy.” While the exact significance of her surname is unclear, it may metaphorically represent order or grooming, fitting with her obsessive desire to control how others perceive her.

Trivia

    • Since Class D is designated for students with defective traits, Kikyō’s placement stems from a specific incident in her past, which remains a defining mystery surrounding her character.
    • During the second-year arc, when asked about her aspirations for the upcoming year, she responded: “To get along with all 1st years and 3rd years. And maybe to make the daily school life fun for everyone.” This statement reflects her continued attempt to maintain her friendly façade, despite her true nature.
    • Light Novel 2nd Year Volume 8 is unique within the You-Zitsu series, as it is the first volume to feature Kikyō Kushida in all three official color illustrations. This was unprecedented in previous volumes, marking a significant visual focus on her character.
