Kiku Hoshimi

Kiku Hoshimi (星見キク, Hoshimi Kiku) is one of the oldest vampires in existence, having lived for over five centuries in search of a way to become human again. She believed in a theory that a vampire could return to being human by drinking the blood of someone they truly loved. Throughout her long life, Kiku tried countless times to fall in love with humans, but each attempt failed, as she would always end up turning them into her underlings instead. As a result, she came to have more subordinates than any other vampire in history.

Her life took a turn when she met Mahiru Seki, a boy burdened by loneliness and trauma. For the first time, Kiku began to experience genuine affection, forming a romantic relationship with him. Under her influence, Mahiru became completely devoted to her, abandoning everything else for her sake. Their bond drew the attention of Kou Yamori, a human-vampire hybrid, as well as Nazuna Nanakusa and Kyouko Mejiro. When confronted, Kiku and Mahiru fled to Hokkaido, where Kiku prepared for the night she believed would make her human again. However, after a violent encounter with Kou and a final confrontation with Anko Uguisu, who blamed her for her parents’ deaths, Kiku finally came to terms with her actions and made peace with herself and those she had hurt.

I just want to fall in love… even if it kills me.

Kiku is a young-looking woman with a slender build and a strikingly pretty appearance. She has a narrow face, shoulder-length light brown hair, and sharp, piercing eyes that give her an unsettling gaze. Her style is elegant and mature, often wearing coats, tops, skirts, stockings, and high heels.

Personality

Kiku had an unpredictable and complex personality. Outwardly, she appeared friendly and empathetic, quickly forming a bond with Mahiru Seki, whom she often met through his part-time job as a flower courier. Despite her charm, she was the vampire with the most underlings, over fifty according to Hatsuka Suzushiro. However, Kiku claimed she never intended to create them, often transforming people by accident and abandoning them afterward. She was highly secretive and observant, always staying several steps ahead of others and using her surroundings to her advantage when confronted. She rarely associated with other vampires but maintained enough connections to serve her interests.

Beneath her composed exterior, Kiku was deeply twisted and manipulative. She enjoyed toying with people, displaying arrogance and a sense of superiority, even mocking other vampires like Nazuna for their recklessness while committing similar acts herself. Her presence could be terrifying, and she wasn’t above intimidation, torture, or murder to achieve her goals. Like Haru Nanakusa, Kiku sought to become human again, believing that falling in love with a human would grant her that wish. However, centuries of failed attempts left her mentally unstable. Her breakdown before Anko Uguisu revealed her despair and confusion about her own nature. Insecure and desperate for validation, she forced Mahiru to sever his past ties, convinced that only complete devotion could prove his love. Despite her belief in romantic ideals, Kiku never truly understood what love meant, chasing an illusion born from stories rather than genuine emotion.

Abilities and Skills

Vampiric Abilities: Like all vampires, Kiku possessed superhuman strength, speed, and durability. She could levitate, phase through solid objects, and rapidly regenerate from injuries. However, after she fell in love with Mahiru, her powers began to weaken. Her regeneration slowed significantly, and she even lost the strength to fly, suggesting that her emotional state affected her supernatural abilities.

Control Over Animals: Kiku demonstrated the ability to control animals, most notably a hare, which she manipulated to do her bidding.

Telepathy: She could communicate telepathically through the hare, using it to deceive others—once pretending to be the hare itself to lure a prince so she could feed on him.

Vampiric Charm: Like most vampires, Kiku possessed a powerful supernatural allure that allowed her to influence human thoughts and emotions. Her charm could completely cloud a person’s judgment, making them obey her without question. Mahiru himself noticed this effect, admitting that his mind would go blank around her and that he would unconsciously do whatever she desired.

Trivia
