Biography

Appearance in Anime
Kengo Miyazawa is a core member of the Little Busters and is often seen as the most disciplined and refined among the group. Known for his strength and skill in kendo, Kengo claims to be undefeated in 100 matches, reflecting his confidence and competitive spirit. Despite his stoic and mature outward appearance, he occasionally displays a naive and childish side, and like the rest of the group, he values the joy and camaraderie they share.
Kengo became the fourth member of the Little Busters after Masato Inohara, Kyousuke Natsume, and Rin Natsume defeated his father in a match, symbolizing a turning point in his life. He often plays the role of the “tsukkomi” the straight man to the others’ antics balancing the group’s dynamic. However, he eventually comes into conflict with Kyousuke’s harsh methods of pushing Riki Naoe and Rin to become stronger, especially when Rin begins to suffer under the pressure.
In the Refrain arc, after Rin suffers a breakdown and Kyousuke’s plans collapse, Kengo proposes remaining in the artificial world indefinitely, hoping to shield Riki and Rin from the painful reality of the real world. His supposed arm injury during this time is later revealed to be fake. After being defeated by Rin in a baseball match, he acknowledges her growth and breaks down in tears, recalling how Kyousuke helped him break free from a future bound to kendo by defeating his father. This moment of reflection leads him to return to the group. In the real world, during the school excursion, Kengo risks his life to save Rin during the bus accident.
Appearance
Kengo is a tall young man with spiky gray hair and blue eyes. While he typically wears his hair in a spiked style, he is shown with it down in Episode 25, “The Last One,” and in Refrain Episode 6, “At the End of the Escape,” offering a rare glimpse of his more relaxed look.
Unlike most male students, Kengo usually opts to wear a traditional kendo uniform rather than the standard school uniform, reflecting his strong dedication to the martial art. After sustaining an arm injury, he begins wearing a distinctive red jacket emblazoned with the Little Busters emblem on the back.
History
Kengo Miyazawa is introduced as the fourth member of the Little Busters, joining the group after Kyousuke Natsume, Masato Inohara, and Rin Natsume defeat his father in a kendo match. Though initially aloof, he becomes a key member of the group and participates in their daily activities, including the formation of a baseball team.
As the story progresses, Kengo grows increasingly conflicted with Kyousuke’s harsh training methods for Riki Naoe and Rin, especially as Rin begins to show signs of emotional strain. His concern for Rin leads to a rift within the group, and he distances himself from their plans. During this time, Kengo fakes an arm injury and continues wearing a red jacket as a symbol of his separation.
In the Refrain arc, Kengo opposes Kyousuke’s plan and seeks to prolong their time in the artificial world, hoping to protect Riki and Rin from the trauma of reality. However, after losing to Rin in a baseball match, he acknowledges her growth and recognizes the importance of facing the truth. He breaks down in tears and reconciles with Kyousuke, reaffirming his place in the group.
In the real world, during the school excursion, Kengo heroically saves Rin during the bus accident, completing his arc as both protector and loyal friend.

Etymology
The given name Kengo (謙吾) is composed of the kanji 謙 (ken), meaning “humble” or “modest,” and 吾 (go), meaning “I” or “me.” His surname Miyazawa (宮沢) combines 宮 (miya), meaning “shrine,” “temple,” or “palace,” and 沢 (sawa or zawa), meaning “marsh” or “swamp.”
Kengo shares his surname with Yukine Miyazawa, a character from Clannad, another visual novel developed by Key.
