Keita Amano (雨野 景太, Amano Keita) is the main protagonist of the Gamers! anime and light novel series. He is a second-year high school student in Class 2-F and the older brother of Kōsei Amano. Keita is a passionate yet casual gamer who eventually becomes part of an unofficial gaming appreciation group alongside Chiaki Hoshinomori and Tasuku Uehara.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Keita Amano is an average-performing student academically, but he finds genuine joy in playing video games purely for fun rather than competition or prestige. His deep passion for gaming often isolates him from his peers, as he frequently plays RPGs on his smartphone even during school hours leaving little room for social interaction. This self-imposed isolation contributes to his inferiority complex, making it difficult for him to connect with others. As a result, many of his classmates misinterpret his reserved nature as arrogance.
Keita’s social world gradually expands after he meets Karen Tendō, who introduces him to a broader circle of friends, including Chiaki Hoshinomori and Tasuku Uehara. His willingness to help others reveals his underlying kindness and loyalty. For instance, he defends Karen’s club from criticism by standing up to Tasuku, assists Eiichi Misumi in acquiring a game, and comforts Aguri Sakurano when he mistakenly believes she has been rejected going so far as to give up buying a game he had eagerly anticipated. Despite occasional friction, he shows sincere concern for Chiaki, carrying her when she faints and reassuring her of the value he places on their connection.
Keita is also notably oblivious when it comes to romantic feelings. He fails to recognize that Karen has developed feelings for him after he supports her or that both Chiaki and her sister Konoha Hoshinomori harbor romantic interest in him. He is genuinely surprised when Karen responds to his accidental confession with affection, prompting him to confront his own feelings and ask her out. Similarly, he does not initially realize that Chiaki is his longtime online gaming friend due to her misleading statements.
After entering a relationship with Karen, Keita remains affectionate but insecure, mistakenly believing she prefers Tasuku because of his popularity. Nevertheless, he cherishes their moments together, exemplified by his shy offer to hold her hand at a festival and his confession that he can think about her for hours while gaming.
Appearance
Keita Amano is a teenage boy with dark violet eyes and brown hair styled in messy bangs. His overall appearance is considered plain and unremarkable, a sentiment echoed by Konoha Hoshinomori, who notes that he does not particularly stand out among his peers.
He typically wears the standard Otobuki High School male uniform but is occasionally seen in casual attire outside of school. Compared to other boys his age, Keita is slightly shorter in stature.
Background
Keita Amano’s story begins when he visits a local game store and unexpectedly encounters Karen Tendō, the most popular girl at Otobuki High School. Surprised to find that she shares his passion for video games, Keita is even more astonished when she invites him to join the school’s Game Club.
The following day, still reeling from his interaction with Karen, Keita visits the club with her and meets another potential recruit, Eiichi Misumi. Initially disheartened to learn he wasn’t the only person invited, Keita quickly warms up when Eiichi expresses a friendly interest in him. However, his enthusiasm fades upon seeing how seriously the club treats gaming its members are highly competitive and have won numerous contests. When asked why he enjoys games, Keita simply answers “for fun,” which sets him apart from the others. Ultimately, he declines Karen’s invitation, preferring a more relaxed approach to gaming rather than the club’s competitive environment.
Although surprised by his own decision, Keita stands by his choice until Karen appears in his classroom to invite him again, this time expressing interest in his gaming abilities. He politely refuses once more, leading Karen to flee in tears, which he fails to fully understand.
Later, Keita visits an arcade where he meets Tasuku Uehara, a charismatic classmate. They play games together, but when Tasuku’s friends show up, Keita assumes he’s being judged and abruptly leaves. Outside, Tasuku confronts him, and their conversation escalates when Tasuku mocks Karen and her club. Angered, Keita defends Karen’s character and gaming ideals, even physically threatening Tasuku. The confrontation ends with an apology and a newfound mutual respect between them.
Keita and Tasuku continue interacting, with Tasuku attempting to push Keita toward social and romantic development. Hoping to help him connect with Karen, Tasuku encourages Keita to speak with a fellow gamer in Karen’s class. Nervously, Keita approaches, but mistakenly ends up talking to Chiaki Hoshinomori, a quiet girl who turns out to share his views on gaming. Both having rejected the Game Club, they quickly bond over shared interests and begin spending time together, exchanging texts and helping each other in games.
However, their budding friendship is disrupted by petty arguments over gaming preferences, which annoys Tasuku enough to intervene and settle their disputes. Keita begins to suspect Chiaki has feelings for Tasuku, especially after she cuts her hair a classic anime trope—which annoys him further.
Keita later witnesses Aguri Sakurano, Tasuku’s girlfriend, upset over Tasuku’s interactions with Chiaki. Wanting to help, Keita approaches her and the two become friends, unknowingly sparking jealousy in both Karen and Tasuku due to their apparent closeness.
During a weekend outing, Keita coincidentally runs into Karen, and the two spend time together at the arcade. Though Karen consistently wins, Keita enjoys himself purely for the fun of it. Encouraged by Tasuku afterward, Keita agrees to try speaking to Karen again, intending to propose friendship. However, during their conversation, he accidentally confesses his feelings, and to his surprise, Karen accepts. This leaves Keita flustered but also makes him realize his own feelings for her.
Afterward, unsure how to face her, Keita begins avoiding Karen, which causes her concern. With support from Tasuku, Chiaki, and Aguri who offer hilariously convoluted but sincere advice Keita musters the courage to talk to Karen. On the school rooftop, he delivers a rambling speech about needing to be brave like other guys who talk to girls. Despite the awkwardness, he formally asks Karen out, and she happily accepts. The two share a playful, if bizarre, exchange before parting ways.
Their first date is interrupted when Chiaki suddenly appears, seeking Keita’s help after being harassed by a group of boys. Though Keita tries to keep his attention on Karen, she notices his closeness with Chiaki and expresses her jealousy through a strained smile. Despite the interruption, the date ends on a good note, with the two laughing on the bus and officially becoming a couple.
Later, Chiaki invites Keita, Karen, Tasuku, and Aguri to her home for a board game night in an effort to clear up various misunderstandings among the group. During the game, tensions remain, as the characters question one another’s romantic fidelity. While some trust is eventually restored, a new issue arises when Karen brings up Keita’s online gaming friends unaware that Chiaki, present in the room, is actually one of them. The revelation shocks Chiaki, who realizes the anonymous gaming companion she’s grown close to is Keita himself.
Etymology
The given name Keita (景太) is composed of the kanji kei (景), meaning “scenery,” and ta (太), meaning “thick” or “big.” His surname, Amano (雨野), combines ama (雨), meaning “rain,” and no (野), meaning “field” or “wilderness.”
Interestingly, Keita Amano’s full name is a homophone of the Japanese name of the protagonist from Yo-kai Watch, also named Keita Amano (known as Nate Adams in the English version), although the kanji used in their names differ.
