Appearance in anime

Togashi’s talent was recognized early. At the age of 12, he was scouted by Tatsuya Fukuda, the coach of Esperion’s youth division, and invited to train with the Junior Team. However, despite training for a week, the opportunity didn’t pan out due to behavioral issues and internal doubts, and Togashi drifted away from professional development.

Still determined to pursue his passion for soccer, Togashi continued honing his skills and later successfully joined Esperion’s Youth Team, where he earned a reputation for being a hot-headed yet capable defender. He initially clashed with other players including Ashito because of his blunt personality and intimidating aura. However, as the team develops, Togashi becomes a steadfast team player, gaining the trust of his peers and coaches.

Appearance

Togashi has a tall, muscular build that reflects his physical playing style on the field. He has short black hair, usually spiked or slicked back, and sharp, stern eyes. His eyebrows and intense glare add to his delinquent-like appearance, which often intimidates those around him, especially new teammates.

Despite his rough exterior, Togashi’s expressions gradually soften over time, especially during moments of teamwork, humor, or emotional honesty with his friends.

Personality

Togashi is blunt, serious, and sometimes aggressive, particularly when dealing with players he believes aren’t giving their all. He has a short temper and a strong sense of justice, often clashing with others over effort and commitment rather than skill.

However, beneath his hardened exterior is a deeply loyal and thoughtful person, with a keen understanding of soccer tactics and a desire to support his team. Togashi is especially protective of his teammates once they’ve earned his respect, and he quickly becomes one of the emotional pillars of the Youth Team.

His development as a character reflects the themes of Ao Ashi: second chances, growth, and the power of team bonds.

Role in the Story

  • Early Clashes with Ashito
When Ashito Aoi first joins the Esperion Youth Team, Togashi views him with suspicion and frustration, especially given Ashito’s lack of discipline and technical refinement. The two clash multiple times, both on and off the pitch.

  • Earning Respect
Over time, Ashito’s passion and persistence win over Togashi, and the two begin to build mutual respect. Togashi becomes one of Ashito’s most trusted teammates, helping him adjust to the challenges of competitive youth soccer.

  • Defensive Backbone
As a center-back, Togashi is often the last line of defense, using his strength and awareness to block opponents. He becomes a key figure in the team’s defensive strategies, especially during high-stakes matches where teamwork and communication are critical.

Relationships

Ashito Aoi
Initially seen as immature and annoying by Togashi, Ashito eventually earns his respect through hard work and sincerity. Their relationship evolves into a friendship built on mutual trust, and Togashi often provides Ashito with guidance and constructive criticism.

Tatsuya Fukuda
Fukuda scouted Togashi when he was 12 and saw potential in him, even though the early opportunity didn’t work out. Togashi later proves Fukuda’s instincts right by becoming a core player for the Youth Team.

Other Teammates
Though Togashi has a gruff personality, he gradually befriends other team members, especially those who show dedication to the sport. He becomes known for his protective nature and ability to speak blunt truths when needed.
