Personality

However, beneath this charming exterior lies a more serious and strategic side; he is highly intelligent and resourceful, often using his cunning to navigate the challenges presented in the deadly survival game. Keigo is fiercely loyal to his friends, especially to his love interest, and he demonstrates a strong sense of justice. Despite his upbeat demeanor, he can also be ruthless when necessary, revealing a darker aspect of his personality when faced with betrayal or threats. Overall, he embodies a blend of charm, intelligence, and intensity.

History

Keigo Kurusu’s history in Future Diary is marked by his involvement in the deadly survival game orchestrated by the God of Time, Deus Ex Machina. He is the holder of the “Necklace Diary,” which allows him to predict the future of his loved ones and assists him in his strategic planning during the game.

Keigo’s life takes a dramatic turn when he becomes a participant in the survival game, where he must compete against other diary holders, each with unique abilities. Throughout the series, his motivations are driven by his desire to protect those he cares about, particularly his love interest, Yuno Gasai.

As the story unfolds, Keigo faces numerous challenges, including betrayals and shifting alliances. His background as a popular and confident student becomes increasingly complicated as he navigates the dark realities of the game. Ultimately, his experiences shape him into a more complex character, revealing both his strengths and vulnerabilities. His history intertwines with themes of love, betrayal, and the struggle for survival, making him a pivotal figure in the narrative.

Diary & Abilities

Keigo Kurusu wields the Criminal Investigation Diary, a specialized cellphone that allows him to foresee criminal activities within his jurisdiction. This power proves invaluable in tracking the other participants of the Survival Game, most of whom are sociopaths embroiled in various illegal acts. However, the diary’s predictive abilities are limited to the outcomes of his own investigations, compelling Kurusu to strategically utilize the information at his disposal.

The Criminal Investigation Diary

As the Chief of Police in Sakurami City, Kurusu commands complete authority over the police force, a fact that underscores his cautious and manipulative nature. His subordinates fight on his behalf without knowledge of his involvement in the Survival Game, which speaks to his adeptness at maintaining control. For instance, he orchestrated a tactical operation by deploying a full team of special units (SWAT in both the manga and anime) to encircle Sakurami Hospital, nearly trapping Yukiteru, Yuno, and Minene Uryuu.

In addition to his strategic prowess, Kurusu is an expert marksman, capable of hitting targets with pinpoint accuracy. During Minene’s assault on Yukiteru and Yuno’s school, he showcased remarkable skill by shooting at her with enough precision to keep her at bay without causing any fatalities—an essential consideration, as killing her would trigger explosives that could annihilate the entire building. Ever cautious, he wears a bulletproof vest at all times, reinforcing his reputation as a prepared and calculated individual.

Both Deus and Muru Muru regard Kurusu as a frontrunner in the Survival Game, acknowledging his formidable blend of intelligence, strategy, and combat skill.

Trivia

    • Yukiteru’s last name is composed of two Kanji: Amano(天), meaning “heavens,” and no (野), meaning “field,” together signifying “heavens’ field.” His first name, Yukiteru (雪輝), combines Yuki (雪), meaning “snow,” and teru (輝), meaning “to shine” or “to glow,” which translates to “glowing snow.”

    • His name is inspired by Jupiter, the Roman god associated with the sky, thunder, and lightning, who also leads the Capitoline Triad alongside Juno and Minerva. In this context, Yukiteru’s closest allies among the Diary Holders mirror this connection, with Yuno representing Juno and Minene symbolizing Minerva. Additionally, Yukiteru’s proficiency with darts may allude to Jupiter’s thunderbolts.

    • Just as Jupiter is regarded as the King of the Gods, Yukiteru ultimately becomes Deus’ successor in the Second World. It is suggested that Yukiteru’s birthday falls in early May.

    • Out of all the Diary Holders, Yukiteru forms the largest number of alliances, collaborating with characters such as Yuno, Kurusu, Tsubaki, Minene, Marco, Ai (briefly), Kamado, and his friends Akise, Hinata, Mao, and Kosaka.

    • He also holds the second-highest kill count among the Diary Holders, surpassed only by Yuno. His victims include Hiyama, Tsubaki, Hinata, Mao, and Kosaka. Moreover, he injures Minene’s eye, shoots Kurusu, and indirectly contributes to Ai’s demise at Yuno’s hands.

    • Yukiteru’s theme song is titled “You Are the Leading Role of Your Life, So Puff Out Your Chest and Walk,” performed by his voice actor, Misuzu Togashi. He and Yuno share a secondary theme song, “My Wish Lives in the Future.”

    • Interestingly, Yukiteru’s likeness is repurposed for the protagonist of Sakae Esuno’s other work, Big Order.

    • According to the manga, Yukiteru and Yuno rule as joint gods of time and space across four additional incarnations of the world.

    • In the Japanese dub of the anime, Aru’s voice is deeper than Yukiteru’s, but this is reversed in the English version. To reflect the passage of time since Yukiteru ascended to godhood, his voice becomes noticeably deeper by the series’ conclusion in the English dub.

    • Yukiteru shares similarities with Shinji Ikari from the Neon Genesis Evangelion series, particularly in their character arcs and psychological struggles.
