Kaoru Yamazaki (山崎 薫, Yamazaki Kaoru), is the tritagonist of Welcome to the NHK! (NHK ni Yōkoso!), appearing in the novel, manga, and anime adaptations. He is an old friend of Tatsuhiro Satou, having first met him during their junior high school days. Years later, they reunite unexpectedly when Satou discovers that Yamazaki lives in the apartment next door.
A passionate otaku and aspiring game developer, Yamazaki serves as both a comedic and tragic character, representing the hardships of chasing dreams and the disillusionment of adulthood. Despite his loud, confident personality, he struggles with insecurities about his future, personal relationships, and societal expectations, making him one of the most well-developed characters in the series.
Background

Appearance in anime
Yamazaki grew up in a rural farming town, where he never fit in due to his obsession with anime, video games, and otaku culture. Bullied and ridiculed for his interests, he eventually found solace in otaku hobbies, leading him to develop a cynical and defensive personality.
He first met Satou in junior high school, where he was one of the few people who tolerated Satou’s presence. Influenced by Yamazaki, Satou became more immersed in otaku culture, marking the beginning of his social withdrawal and obsession with gaming and anime.
As an adult, Yamazaki enrolls in a game development college in Tokyo, aspiring to create his own eroge (erotic game). However, he struggles with doubts about his future, fearing that his dreams may never become reality. His insecurities about adulthood, career, and relationships parallel Satou’s own struggles, making their friendship a mix of camaraderie, rivalry, and dysfunction.
Appearance
Yamazaki has a short, stocky build, with spiky black hair, round glasses, and an expressive face. He is often seen wearing casual T-shirts and jeans, reflecting his laid-back yet passionate personality.
His design is distinctively “otaku-like,” with exaggerated facial expressions and frantic body language, making him one of the most animated characters in the series. However, his comedic appearance hides a more serious and vulnerable side, which is revealed as the story progresses.
Personality
Yamazaki is loud, energetic, and highly opinionated, often engaging in rants about anime, eroge, and otaku culture. He prides himself on his geeky interests, unapologetically embracing his obsession with 2D girls and bishoujo games.
Despite his outspoken and confident persona, Yamazaki harbors deep insecurities and self-doubt. Beneath his bravado, he fears that his dreams of becoming a game developer are unrealistic, and he struggles with feelings of inadequacy and anxiety about adulthood.
He is also prone to fits of jealousy, frustration, and emotional outbursts, particularly when dealing with romantic relationships or career failures. His hot-tempered nature and self-deprecating humor make him both hilarious and painfully relatable, adding depth to his character beyond the typical comedic sidekick role.
Role in the Story
-
Reuniting with Satou
Yamazaki’s unexpected reunion with Satou marks the beginning of their strange but entertaining friendship. Though he initially acts superior to Satou, boasting about his goals and ambitions, it quickly becomes clear that he is just as lost and insecure as Satou is. Despite their constant bickering and teasing, Yamazaki genuinely cares about Satou, acting as one of the few people willing to push him toward self-improvement. However, rather than encouraging Satou to find a real job or reintegrate into society, Yamazaki often enables his escapist tendencies, reinforcing their shared addiction to otaku culture. -
The Game Development Arc
One of Yamazaki’s most significant story arcs involves his dream of becoming a game developer. He convinces Satou to help him create an eroge (erotic game), hoping it will be their ticket to success. However, their work ethic is questionable, and their project quickly devolves into procrastination, distractions, and absurd discussions about hentai tropes. As the deadline approaches, Yamazaki begins to panic, realizing that his future is uncertain and that he may never achieve his dreams. This leads to one of his most vulnerable moments, where he breaks down in frustration, revealing how much pressure he has placed on himself. In the end, their game never reaches completion, symbolizing the harsh reality of failed dreams and wasted potential. -
Struggles with Love and Adulthood
Despite his obsession with 2D girls, Yamazaki has real romantic struggles, particularly with his childhood friend and crush, Nanako. He has deep feelings for her, but his low self-esteem and otaku lifestyle make him believe that he is unworthy of a real relationship. When Nanako visits him, Yamazaki is torn between his love for her and his fear of rejection. In a heartbreaking moment, he chooses to suppress his feelings, believing that she deserves someone more normal and successful than him. This subplot highlights one of Yamazaki’s greatest internal conflicts his desire for human connection versus his inability to escape the safety of his otaku world. -
Forced to Face Reality
As the series nears its end, Yamazaki is forced to return to his hometown, as his family demands that he take over their farm. Despite his resistance, he ultimately accepts his fate, realizing that he cannot run from adulthood forever. His departure is one of the most emotional moments in the series, symbolizing the bittersweet transition from youth to adulthood. Though he bids farewell to his dreams, he leaves with a sense of closure, proving that moving on does not always mean failure.
Relationships
Tatsuhiro Satou
Yamazaki’s best (and worst) friend, with whom he shares a chaotic and dysfunctional friendship. Despite their constant arguing and teasing, they care about each other deeply.
Nanako
Yamazaki’s childhood friend and crush, who represents the love and normal life he feels unworthy of.
Misaki Nakahara
Though they rarely interact, Yamazaki is highly suspicious of Misaki’s influence on Satou, correctly guessing that she is not as altruistic as she seems.
