Personality

Kanon is known for her shy and somewhat flustered nature, often admitting that she struggles with public speaking. When walking around town, she enjoys listening to music on her headphones and frequently sings along to her favorite songs. Though she dreams of singing in front of others, she finds herself particularly anxious about performing publicly. Despite viewing herself as “ordinary” with no remarkable talents or clear life aspirations, Kanon is motivated by a desire to uplift others through her love for music. Becoming a school idol became a path for her to move beyond her self-perception as simply “normal” and connect with others. Although she finds girly outfits cute, she feels a bit shy and hesitant about wearing anything too frilly or revealing.

Her favorite saying is, “It’s always sunny above the clouds.”

Kanon’s natural charisma and warm-hearted personality make her stand out, even if she is shyer than previous protagonists like Honoka Kosaka and Chika Takami. She is incredibly kind, cheerful, and supportive, always extending a hand to those around her. She is also a loyal friend with a strong sense of justice, standing up to bullies who threatened her friend Chisato in their childhood. Her compassionate nature extends to animals as well, as seen in her gentle interactions with a stray cat.

With her magnetic personality and deep empathy, Kanon forms connections easily and is eager to help others, even reaching out to those who don’t always treat her kindly, as shown in her interactions with Wien. Her idealistic outlook sometimes borders on naivety, as she often sees the best in people, even when others—like Sumire—are more skeptical, such as when Kanon was reluctant to believe that Natsumi was only after personal gain.

While generally kind-hearted, Kanon also has a more straightforward, boyish side that comes out when she’s at home or feeling particularly nervous. Early on, her bluntness reflects her frustration and self-doubt, especially before meeting Keke, who helped her start seeing herself in a new light.

Background

Though singing has always been Kanon’s favorite pastime, she spends much of her time helping her mother at the family cafe, where the special baked apples with cream are a popular treat among customers. Her father works as a translator, and her grandmother, who hails from Spain, makes delicious homemade paella—a dish Kanon loves. The cafe, which she calls home, is filled with cherished memories, many of them shared with her close childhood friend, Chisato Arashi. The two have spent countless hours together there, often playing with Kanon’s pet owl, Manmaru (“Roundy”), who has since become the cafe’s beloved mascot.

Clubs and Hobbies

Kanon joined the school idol club with Keke Tang, sharing her dream of one day owning a cat. In the second season, she takes on a new role as the vice president of Yuigaoka’s student council.

Etymology

Kanon’s name is written in hiragana (かのん), which does not carry a specific meaning. However, the official Chinese-subtitled version of the second season’s anime PV revealed that her name, when written in kanji as 香音, can be interpreted as “fragrant sound.”

Her surname, Shibuya, is both a well-known place name and a common surname. The kanji for “Shibu” (澁) has various meanings, including “stagnant” or “slow-flowing water,” while “Ya” (谷) translates to “valley.”

Trivia

    • Kanon and Ren Hazuki represent the “cool” attribute among Liella!’s third-year members.
    • She is the first idol with an orange image color who does not have a “smile” attribute and remains the only one not to be in her second year.
    • Kanon’s family cafe was originally inspired by Cafe Casa in Shibuya. However, due to some incidents involving Love Live fans—such as review-bombing and unauthorized photoshoots—the anime staff and the cafe’s owner agreed not to use the real building’s likeness in the series anymore.
    • Kanon wears the WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise-Cancelling Over-The-Ear Headphones by Sony in the anime, using the limited edition “Silent White” color.
    • Initially, Kanon was depicted wearing tights, but later illustrations and anime visuals show her in mid-calf socks. The only figurine featuring her original look with tights is the Super Special Series Kanon figure by FuRyu.
    • Though she doesn’t wear them often in public, Kanon wears glasses at home.
    • Despite not considering herself fashion-conscious, she styles her hair with care each morning and occasionally ties it up when relaxing at home.
    • Her bangs became her signature as a school idol after receiving numerous compliments on how cute they look.
    • Kanon has a habit of singing aloud while taking a bath, which annoys her mother and younger sister.
    • She often confides in her pet owl, Manmaru, promising to be honest when looking into his round eyes.
    • When struggling to write lyrics or essays, she sometimes does a yoga pose she calls her “concentrating pose.”
    • Although early character notes referenced Kanon’s Spanish ancestry, as of October 2022, neither her Spanish heritage nor her grandmother has been mentioned in the anime.
