Did You Know?

Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Kanade Tachibana

Kanade Tachibana (立華 かなで, Tachibana Kanade) is a prominent character from the series Angel Beats! and is commonly referred to as “Angel” by the Afterlife Battle Front. This nickname was initially given by Hideki Hinata and later adopted by the group’s leader, Yuri Nakamura, after she recognized Kanade’s extraordinary powers.

In her role as Student Council President at the Afterlife school, Kanade is responsible for helping her fellow students navigate their unresolved issues. However, her approach often comes into conflict with Yuri’s belief that God is to blame for her suffering, which leads to Kanade becoming a target for the Afterlife Battle Front after its formation. She serves as the central heroine of the series, embodying themes of struggle and redemption.

I refuse to just accept this fate handed to me. I’ve lost too much, endured too much to let it all be for nothing. In a world that took everything from me, I’m choosing to stand and fight. Even if it’s against fate itself, I’ll keep resisting until I find the peace I was denied. No one’s gonna tell me what I can or can’t do—not anymore.
— Yuri Nakamura

Kanade’s full apperance.

Kanade Tachibana is depicted as a teenage girl with fair skin and long, waist-length white hair, which is often perceived as blue. Her hair is secured at the back with a pale blue barrette, leaving a section of it elegantly styled up. She has straight front bangs that partially cover her eyebrows, contributing to her enigmatic and stoic demeanor.

Her striking yellow-gold eyes, which can exhibit hints of auburn or brown under certain lighting conditions, have a gentle upward curve that enhances her mysterious and kuudere character archetype.

Kanade is seen wearing the standard uniform of the Afterlife School, consisting of a skirt layered over a white petticoat, knee-high white socks, and brown loafers. She has a petite frame, standing at just 150 cm (4’11”). After her apparent reincarnation, her hair is depicted as being shorter and tied into a ponytail.

Personality

At first glance, Kanade Tachibana may seem like an ordinary high school girl, but her demeanor sharply contrasts with her apparent emotional detachment. She rarely displays outward feelings, making it challenging for others to gauge her thoughts and emotions. This lack of expressiveness often leads to questions about her awareness and consciousness. Despite this, Kanade is revealed to be quite intelligent; she effectively utilizes the Angel Player program to create weapons and defensive tools, prompting the Afterlife Battle Front to mistakenly view her as an angel sent by God.

As the narrative unfolds, Kanade gradually distances herself from forming friendships due to the painful reality of her world, where her companions eventually fade away. However, her interactions with Otonashi bring out glimpses of her emotions. Notably, in Episode 13, she shows vulnerability by pouting and smiling on occasion.

Kanade has a particular fondness for Mapo Tofu, so much so that she bends school rules to enjoy it. She even incorporates it into a self-composed school anthem towards the series’ conclusion. In her leisure time, she enjoys gardening and is a former member of the now-disbanded gardening club. Her friendship with Otonashi marks a significant change in her life, as she permits him to call her by her first name and often chooses to spend time with him. Kanade aids him in confrontations, notably assisting against Naoi and rescuing Otonashi and the SSS from a River Monster.

Over time, Kanade becomes more open with Otonashi, engaging in casual conversations and participating in his plans to help the SSS address their unresolved feelings regarding their deaths. As they grow closer, Otonashi notices her lack of common sense and affectionately refers to her as a “Clumsy Angel.” Notably, Kanade demonstrates an impressive pain tolerance, as she remains unfazed after being shot multiple times by the SSS and consistently recovers swiftly from injuries during their encounters.

Background

Details about Kanade’s past are sparse, but a significant revelation occurs during Otonashi’s final moments alive. He mustered his remaining strength to indicate his wish to be an organ donor on the back of his ID, specifically circling the option to donate his heart. This act of selflessness ultimately connects him to Kanade, as it is revealed that she received his heart after his death.

While the circumstances of Kanade’s own death remain unclear, there are strong implications that she suffered from heart disease and was able to survive for a period after receiving Otonashi’s heart. Unfortunately, it seems that the transplant eventually failed to sustain her before she could complete her high school education.

Kanade has spent a considerable amount of time in the afterlife, sharing that all of her friends have either vanished or been obliterated. This suggests that she has been in the afterlife for an extended duration, during which she has made efforts to help others “graduate” from their own struggles.

In the manga, it is revealed that Yuri died after being struck by a car while waiting at a bus stop. She later told Otonashi that the police arrived thirty minutes after her siblings had been killed, though the circumstances of how they learned about the murders remain unclear.

Abilities

Kanade Tachibana wields artificial supernatural abilities that are activated by her voice, allowing for immediate effects. Coupled with her advanced hand-to-hand combat skills, she becomes a formidable adversary against the members of the SSS.

During an attempted infiltration of Kanade’s dormitory, the SSS uncovers information about her abilities stored on her personal computer. This revelation deeply unsettles Yuri, who begins to doubt whether Kanade’s powers are divinely bestowed, as she initially believed. This leads her to question the existence of God, causing her to ponder if all their struggles have been in vain. A subsequent search reveals a manual titledAngel Player, which supports the notion that Kanade’s abilities do not originate from God.

List of Guard Skills
    • Hand Sonic: Calls forth blades on her hands capable of slicing through steel and dispatching Shadows with ease. Various versions include:

      • Hand Sonic [Version One]: The standard longsword shape, commonly used in combat against the SSS.
      • Hand Sonic [Version Two]: A thinner, elongated blade with a curved-diamond tip, designed for increased speed.
      • Hand Sonic [Version Three]: Resembles a traditional sai, which Kanade has described as “inelegant.”
      • Hand Sonic [Version Four]: Shaped like a lotus flower, this version is more suited for bludgeoning than slicing. Kanade created it to make her weapon “cuter.”
      • Hand Sonic [Version Five]: The latest iteration, featuring pincers secured by a violet gauntlet resembling a demonic head. This version was inspired by Otonashi’s suggestion for a more fearsome appearance and can be used as a slingshot.
      • Hand Sonic [Version Twenty-Eight]: A unique version introduced in the third Drama CD, known for its painful effects.
    • Distortion:Generates an invisible shield that deflects bullets and projectiles, although switching to offense requires lowering the shield. It does not deflect physical attacks, which Kanade dodges instead.

    • Delay: Creates an after-image to confuse opponents, effectively evading melee attacks.

    • Harmonics: Produces a clone of herself with blood-red eyes, possessing its own consciousness and abilities, including the use of Harmonics.

    • Absorb:A hidden ability that reintegrates Harmonics clones into her body, albeit with risks due to their independent consciousness. This ability can be executed with a command calledtimewait, which delays the reintegration process.

    • Overdrive: A passive ability that grants her superhuman strength without requiring activation. This power allows her to lift massive opponents, such as the Master of the River and several SSS members combined.

    • Howling: Emits powerful sound waves from her crossed Hand Sonic blades, designed to incapacitate enemies. This ability was developed by one of her Harmonics clones.

    • Angel Wings: Allows her to sprout wings that slow her descent, helping her survive long falls, such as jumping from a building’s rooftop.

    • Sonic Rotation (unnamed): When activated, Kanade envelops herself in a blue aura, spinning rapidly with Hand Sonics in each hand. This technique has been described as powerful as a jet bomber, capable of devastating everything in its vicinity and leaving a circular crater in its wake.

Trivia

    • In the third drama CD, Kanade expresses her love for Yuzuru Otonashi.
    • During the opening credits, she is depicted playing the piano, but it remains unclear whether she is actually proficient with the instrument.
    • The third drama CD also introduces a later version of her weapon calledHand Sonic Version 28, which Kanade states is crafted from emotions such as fear and sadness. She mentions that she has created versions 6 through 27 as well.
    • During the initial airing of the anime series, many Japanese fans admired Kanade, often exclaiming, “Tenshi-chan, maji Tenshi” (天使ちゃんマジ天使), which translates to “Tenshi-chan truly is an angel.” Even after it was revealed that she was not a real angel, fans continued to refer to her in this manner, as the phrase is commonly used for endearing characters.
    • In Episode 3, when Yuri Nakamura and her group access Kanade’s computer, they find a name listed as “Tachibana Kazunobu” on the school roster. However, since the kanji for the surname differs (Kanade’s is 立華 while the roster shows 立花), it is likely that this name refers to an NPC with a similar romanized last name, rather than someone related to Kanade.
    • Interestingly, Kanade’s name is notably absent from the school roster.
    • In the series’ final scene, Otonashi sees Kanade outside a large department store modeled after the real-life Shibuya 109, a well-known shopping destination in Tokyo that is particularly popular among teenagers.
    • The Angel Player program is entirely written in English, suggesting that Kanade possesses knowledge of the language.
    • There is a continuity issue regarding Kanade’s existence: Otonashi’s heart was transplanted to her, indicating she would have been alive during his lifetime, yet Kanade was already in the afterlife before Otonashi. This raises the possibility that Otonashi’s soul wandered until it eventually arrived in the afterlife, potentially explaining the time gap.
    • Some fans speculate that Kanade’s lingering desire to thank her heart donor may have attracted Otonashi to this world, despite his having lived a complete life before his death.
    • Notably, Kanade shares her English voice actress, Emily Neves, with Minene Uryu fromMirai Nikkiand Kotomi Ichinose fromClannad.
