Kaito Kuroba

Kaito Kuroba (黒羽 快斗, Kuroba Kaito) is the central character of the Magic Kaito manga and anime series. He is also known by his alter ego, the infamous Phantom Thief Kaitou Kid (怪盗キッド, Kaitō Kiddo). In addition to his role as the protagonist in Magic Kaito, Kaito appears as a recurring figure in the Detective Conan manga and anime series, where he is sometimes portrayed as a minor antagonist.

Kaito Kuroba as Phantom Thief Kid.

Kaito Kuroba is characterized by his dark brown hair (black in Magic Kaito 1412), which is styled with a fringe that falls just above his eyes. The rest of his hair is typically hidden beneath a white top hat adorned with a blue ribbon. When in his regular attire, Kaito wears a white monocle over his right eye, which features a dangling green charm with a white clover design. His outfit consists of a white suit jacket layered over a blue shirt, paired with a red tie and white dress slacks. A distinctive white Hang Glider Cape is attached to the shoulders of his jacket. Kaito completes the look with blue socks and white Oxford-style shoes with white soles, though in his earlier appearances, he wore white loafer-style shoes.

On occasion, Kaito is seen in more covert attire, such as black shirts and pants, along with a black hat, to help conceal his identity while gathering information for heists or diverting attention during his heist performances. Apart from these outfits, Kaito is a master of disguise and has frequently adopted various personas throughout both Magic Kaito and Detective Conan.

Notably, Kaito shares a remarkable resemblance to Shinichi Kudo, a similarity that has allowed him to impersonate Shinichi effortlessly on several occasions. In some instances, such as the Azure Throne case, Kaito disguises himself as Shinichi to clear him of suspicions regarding a crime. During this event, when Inspector Nakamori attempted to pull on Kaito’s face, there were no signs of a rubber mask, leaving both Conan and Kaito questioning the true connection between the Phantom Thief and Shinichi Kudo.

Personality

Kaito Kuroba, both in his civilian life and as Kaitou Kid, is a natural trickster driven by the thrill of overcoming challenges. His overconfidence, bordering on arrogance, often leads him to seek out high-risk situations, relishing the opportunity to outwit anyone who dares to pursue him. Kaito delights in leading the police on wild goose chases, getting them tantalizingly close to capturing him before escaping in a dramatic fashion. Despite his mischievous nature, Kaito shows a surprising tenderness toward his fans, often refusing to disappear when the police attempt to prevent the public from witnessing his heists. Many of his tricks rely on his exceptional ability to blend in with crowds, allowing him to evade capture.

Charming and quick-witted, Kaito has a knack for leaving a lasting impression on women with his smooth words. However, beneath his playful demeanor lies a compassionate individual who despises seeing others in pain. Kaito will not hesitate to leap into action to help someone in need, whether physically or emotionally. Though often regarded as a rogue, he operates by a personal code of honor—he will abandon the loot if it no longer serves the purpose of challenging his trickster skills, if it does not involve Pandora, or if it belongs to someone with a more noble cause. This moral compass is one of the reasons Kaito occasionally allies with Conan in pursuit of common goals.

Despite his charismatic and confident persona, Kaito harbors a deep-seated fear of fish, known as ichthyophobia, a quirky and unexplained aspect of his character.

Kaito’s relationship with his father, Toichi, is at the core of his identity. Having grown up admiring his father’s skills and wisdom, Kaito was profoundly affected by Toichi’s death. Rather than openly grieving, Kaito hides his sorrow behind a stoic poker face, concealing the pain of losing both his idol and his father.

Background

Kaito Kuroba is the current incarnation of Kaitou Kid, a legendary phantom thief. He is a second-year student at Ekoda High School, where he is classmates with his childhood friend Aoko Nakamori, the witch Akako Koizumi, and the transfer student detective Saguru Hakuba. Kaito’s journey into the world of Kaitou Kid begins after he uncovers his father’s secret identity as the original Kaitou Kid, eight years after his father’s mysterious death. This revelation comes when Kaito discovers a hidden room in their home and learns the truth from his father’s trusted attendant, Konosuke Jii.

Determined to continue his father’s legacy, Kaito assumes the role of Kaitou Kid, with the goal of drawing out his father’s killers. By restoring the notoriety of Kaitou Kid as a world-famous thief, Kaito hopes to attract the attention of the criminals responsible for his father’s death. His efforts lead him to the Blue Birthday heist, where he learns that the murderers are searching for the fabled gemPandora, said to grant immortality when the comet associated with it passes. Upon discovering that his father had been killed for refusing to aid them in obtaining the gem, Kaito vows to find Pandora first and destroy it to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

While Kaito’s mother is aware of his discovery of his father’s secret room, she remains supportive of his decision to carry on his father’s legacy as Kaitou Kid.

Abilities

Intelligence
As the son of the legendary magician Toichi Kuroba, Kaito inherited his father’s remarkable photographic memory, enabling him to recall intricate details about any subject he encounters. This skill proves invaluable when planning heists, as Kaito meticulously researches the layout of his targets and prepares for every possibility. His sharp perception allows him to easily detect dishonesty or secrets, such as when he deduced that Conan Edogawa was no ordinary child.

Disguise
Kaito’s ability to disguise himself is arguably his greatest asset in his career as Kaitou Kid. With minimal preparation, he can seamlessly transform into anyone, regardless of their appearance. When disguising as someone shorter than himself, Kaito compensates by altering his posture or wearing outfits that obscure the difference in height. His disguises often involve the use of latex masks, along with voice modulation techniques to mimic the speech patterns and dialect of his targets.

Stage Magic
Having been trained in magic from a young age, Kaito excels in various forms of stage magic, including escape artistry, sleight of hand, and stealth tactics. These skills, honed through years of practice, form the foundation of his elaborate heists and allow him to outwit even the most seasoned law enforcement officers.

Athletic Ability
Kaito’s physical prowess is another key strength. He is highly athletic, excelling in a variety of sports and activities such as skiing, rollerblading, scooter driving, and hang gliding. His agility and quick reflexes aid him in navigating dangerous situations, whether he’s making a daring escape or performing a high-flying heist.

Plot

Conan Arc
Kaito Kuroba, alongside his childhood friend Aoko Nakamori, was walking one rainy day when a high school girl approached him, mistakenly thinking he was someone she knew. On April 1st, Kaito assumed his alter ego, Kaitou Kid, and made a dramatic entrance on the roof of the Haido City Hotel, where he encountered a young boy. After questioning the boy, a bottle rocket went off, signaling the police. Realizing the child’s intentions, Kaito asked for his name before making his escape.

Bourbon Arc
While aboard the Bell Tree Express, Kaito was investigating the location where the “Blush Mermaid” was to be exhibited. When Conan exposed his identity, Kaito quickly disguised himself as Sherry to mislead Bourbon, a member of the Black Organization. To most of the organization, Sherry was believed to have perished in an explosion, but Vermouth learned that she was still alive. Kaito, annoyed at being used as a decoy, voiced his displeasure during a phone call with Vermouth.

Movies

The Last Wizard of the Century
During his heist at the Imperial Fabergé Egg exhibition, Kaitou Kid made a brief visit to Ayumi Yoshida’s family apartment, greeting her with his signature charm. His target was the “Memories Egg,” and he misled the police into misinterpreting the time of the heist. However, after retrieving the egg, Kid was shot at by a mysterious assailant. In the chaos, he dropped the egg, and one of his doves was injured in the process.

Magician of the Silver Sky
Kaitou Kid’s next target was the “Jewel of Destiny,” a sapphire owned by Juri Maki. To get close to the jewel, Kid disguised himself as Shinichi Kudo. Despite the disguise, Conan, Agasa, and Ai immediately recognized him as Kid. When Inspector Nakamori tried to unmask Kid, they were shocked to discover that Kid’s appearance bore an uncanny resemblance to Shinichi Kudo, revealing that no mask was used.

The Private Eyes’ Requiem
On April 4th, Kid targeted a diamond owned by Soichiro Miyama. During his heist, he witnessed a robbery by Suehiko Itou and his accomplices. As a result, Kid became the target of mercenaries hired to silence him.

The Lost Ship in the Sky
Kaitou Kid’s next target was the “Lady Sky,” a rare Lapis Lazuli stone engraved with a woman’s face in gold. His heist was once again filled with danger and intrigue as he attempted to steal this precious artifact.

Sunflowers of Inferno
Kid’s heist focused on the famous painting “The Sunflowers” by Vincent Van Gogh. This time, however, his goal was not just to steal the masterpiece but to protect it from a threat that sought to destroy it.

The Fist of Blue Sapphire
In a daring move, Kaito disguised himself as Ran and knocked Conan unconscious before traveling to Singapore. There, he investigated the mysterious murder of Sherilyn Tan and found himself entangled in the search for the legendary “Fist of Blue Sapphire.” During his first attempt at the heist, Kid was intercepted by Leon Lowe, who incapacitated him with a stun gun and tried to drown him in a safe room. Kid’s second attempt to steal the gem was interrupted when he discovered the body of Rachel Cheung, forcing him to escape and leave the scene.

The Million-Dollar Pentagram
Kaitou Kid’s next target was the two swords of Toshizo Hijikata. During his heist, he confronted Heiji Hattori, the High School Detective of the West. Heiji noticed striking similarities between Kid and Shinichi Kudo, nearly exposing Kid’s true identity.

Family

Kuroba Family

Toichi Kuroba: Kaito’s father, whom he deeply admired as a child. After Toichi’s death eight years ago, Kaito took up the mantle of Kaitou Kid to uncover the truth behind his father’s murder and to continue his legacy.

Chikage Kuroba: Kaito’s mother, who is currently living abroad but stays in touch with her son. She once tried to convince Kaito to abandon his life as Kid and pursue a career as a magician in Las Vegas.

Kudo Family

Shinichi Kudo: Kaito’s greatest rival and a brilliant detective. Their first encounter occurred indirectly during the Clock Tower Heist, where Shinichi anticipated Kid’s next move and deciphered the thief’s code. Neither of them initially realized they were blood relatives, as Kaito and Shinichi are paternal first cousins. Their similar appearance and voice have sparked intrigue. In the films, Kaito often adopts Shinichi’s likeness to achieve his goals or assist Conan. Kaito is aware of Conan’s true identity and frequently refers to him as “Great Detective” (名探偵, Meitantei).

Yusaku Kudo: A world-renowned mystery writer and Shinichi’s father, Yusaku has not met Kaito yet, but is likely aware of him through his brother Toichi.

Yukiko Kudo: Kaito’s aunt-in-law, though he doesn’t realize this. He first met her when she visited Toichi at a restaurant, where he surprised her with a rose and teasingly called her a “pretty old lady,” much to her annoyance.

Friends and Acquaintances

Aoko Nakamori: Kaito’s childhood friend, whom he loves deeply. Aoko also has feelings for Kaito, but both are too shy to confess their feelings. She once learned of Kaito’s phobia of fish from Chikage, using it as a playful countermeasure to his pranks.

Ginzo Nakamori: Aoko’s father and Kaito’s neighbor, who works in the police force and is dedicated to capturing Kaitou Kid. Though Ginzo once suspected Kaito’s true identity, he later dismissed his suspicions.

Konosuke Jii: A longtime friend and assistant to Kaito’s late father, Toichi. Konosuke unintentionally revealed the secret of Toichi’s life as Kaitou Kid to Kaito and has since been a trusted ally. He provides Kaito with tools for his heists and helps gather intelligence on his targets.

Main Enemies

Heiji Hattori: The High School Detective of the West and a rival to Shinichi Kudo. Heiji first encountered Kid during the Fairy Lip heist, where Kid tricked him by disguising himself as Kazuha Toyama to steal a jewel. The situation escalated when Heiji attempted to kiss Kazuha, unaware it was Kid in disguise. In The Million-Dollar Pentagram, Heiji clashed with Kid again, this time on a rooftop, where he was shocked by the striking resemblance between Kid and Shinichi Kudo.

Shinichi Kudo / Conan Edogawa: Kaito’s most prominent rival, whose detective skills constantly put him in competition with Kid. Their similar appearances have allowed Kaito to impersonate Shinichi without needing a mask, frustrating Conan when Kaito gets close to Ran. Despite their rivalry, they have occasionally worked together to solve cases or clear Kid’s name when he is falsely accused.

Saguru Hakuba: A classmate and high school detective who became suspicious of Kaito’s identity as Kid. Hakuba’s keen observation skills led him to discover a strand of Kaito’s hair during a theft, which eventually helped him deduce Kaito’s secret identity.

Snake: A member of the mysterious syndicate responsible for Toichi Kuroba’s death. Snake believes Kaito is actually his father, Toichi, who survived the attack eight years ago. He has warned Kaito to stay away from significant jewels, threatening dire consequences if Kid continues to pursue them. Kaito’s ultimate goal is to find Pandora, a gem Snake covets, in order to destroy it and thwart the syndicate’s plans.

Akako Koizumi: A classmate and a witch who practices both Red and Black Magic. Akako knows Kaito’s secret identity and attempts to make him her servant, using her charms, though they have little effect on him. She sees magicians like Kaito as natural enemies. During a Valentine’s Day heist, Akako used voodoo to inflict pain on Kaito, causing him to experience intense suffering, including blood loss and eye pain.

People Who Know Kaito’s Identity

Akako Koizumi: As a student at Ekoda High School, Akako figured out Kaito’s identity after noticing he was the only male student unaffected by her charms.

Saguru Hakuba: Hakuba deduced Kaito’s secret after finding a hair during a theft.

Konosuke Jii: Toichi Kuroba’s former assistant, Jii was the first person to mistake Kaito for Toichi when he initially saw him as Kid. He has since supported Kaito in his endeavors.

Chikage Kuroba: Kaito’s mother, who is aware of his identity as Kaitou Kid. She was questioned by Kaito after he discovered her connection to Toichi’s secret life.

Ruby Jones: A character who recognized Kaito’s voice when they spoke on the phone.
