Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Kaidou Shun

Shun Kaidou (海藤 瞬, Kaidō Shun), is one of the main characters in Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.). He is a classic chuunibyou, someone who delusionally believes he has supernatural powers and is the chosen hero in a secret battle against evil. He refers to himself as “The Jet-Black Wings” (Shikkoku no Tsubasa, 漆黒の翼) and is convinced that the world is controlled by an evil organization called “The Dark Reunion.” Because of his over-the-top behavior and exaggerated speeches, he is often seen as an outcast by his classmates.

Although Shun tries to act like a powerful warrior, he is actually quite cowardly, often freezing in fear during dangerous situations. However, despite his tendency to overreact and boast, he has a kind heart and will put himself in harm’s way to protect his friends when it truly matters. In the Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan live-action adaptation, Shun was portrayed by Ryo Yoshizawa.

Appearance in anime

Shun is an average high school student with an overactive imagination. He is deeply immersed in his own fantasies, genuinely believing that he is a chosen warrior fighting against a secret evil organization, the Dark Reunion. He has no actual powers, but he practices “forbidden techniques” (which are just dramatic hand gestures and stances) to “prepare for battle.”

His chuunibyou mindset makes him socially awkward, and his classmates find him strange, but despite this, he is one of the more approachable and friendly members of Kusuo’s group. Though he often acts tough, he is easily scared and will back down when faced with real danger. However, when his friends are truly in trouble, he does his best to stand up for them, even if he knows he is outmatched.

Appearance

Shun has messy dark blue hair with a streak of green and is shorter than most of his classmates. He usually wears a bandage on his left cheek, though it is not from an actual injury, but rather for dramatic effect to make himself look like a battle-hardened hero. His thin frame and exaggerated body language further enhance his over-the-top personality.

He wears the standard PK Academy uniform, consisting of a green gakuran jacket with black trim, matching pants, and a white undershirt. His posture is often dramatic, as he strikes heroic poses and makes elaborate hand gestures while speaking.

Personality

Shun is dramatic, eccentric, and deeply immersed in his chuunibyou fantasies. He truly believes that he is the chosen hero of a hidden battle against the Dark Reunion, often delivering lengthy monologues about his “sealed powers” and upcoming battles. He takes everyday situations and exaggerates them, turning minor inconveniences into epic showdowns in his mind.

Despite his bold words, Shun is actually cowardly, often panicking in genuinely dangerous situations. He talks big but runs away at the first sign of trouble, leading to many comedic moments where his delusions collapse under real-world pressure.

However, while he is fearful, he is not entirely spineless—when his friends are in danger, he pushes past his fear to protect them, even if he has no actual fighting ability. His heart is in the right place, and his loyalty to his friends is genuine, making him a lovable and well-meaning, if misguided, companion.

Role in the Story

  • The Chuunibyou of PK Academy
Shun’s delusions are one of the main sources of comedy in the series. He constantly spins wild theories, often trying to drag Kusuo or the others into his fantasies. His habit of turning minor events into major conspiracies frequently leads to misunderstandings and absurd situations.

  • Friendship with Kusuo Saiki
Although Kusuo finds Shun ridiculous, he tolerates him more than most because Shun’s thoughts are easy to predict (unlike Nendou, whose mind Kusuo cannot read). Shun is one of the few characters who treats Kusuo like a normal person, not realizing that Kusuo actually has psychic abilities, which adds to the humor of their interactions.

  • Bravery Despite Fear
Though Shun is a coward, he has moments of genuine courage. When his friends are truly in trouble, he forces himself to stand up for them, even if he knows he’s outmatched. While he may never be the hero he imagines himself to be, his willingness to face his fears when it truly matters makes him a valuable friend.

Relationships

Kusuo Saiki
Kusuo considers Shun’s delusions exhausting, but he finds him less annoying than Nendou because he can at least predict what Shun will do. Although Kusuo refuses to acknowledge their friendship, he secretly helps Shun on occasion, using his psychic powers to prevent him from embarrassing himself too much.

Riki Nendou
Shun is terrified of Nendou, seeing him as a brute who is too dumb to be real. Because Nendou is immune to Kusuo’s telepathy, Shun believes he might actually be part of the Dark Reunion, further fueling his wild theories. However, despite his fear, he still interacts with Nendou regularly, even if he tries to avoid him whenever possible.

Aren Kuboyasu
Shun idolizes Aren for his “dangerous and mysterious aura”, believing that Aren is a dark warrior hiding his true strength. However, Aren, who is a reformed delinquent, finds Shun’s over-the-top fantasies hilarious, but also frustrating when Shun unintentionally provokes people, putting them both in trouble.

Kineshi Hairo
Hairo, being a passionate and hardworking person, tries to encourage Shun to be more confident and proactive. However, Shun misinterprets Hairo’s enthusiasm as the energy of a battle-hardened warrior, often adding Hairo into his fantasy narratives.

Trivia

    • His name “Kaidou” (海藤) can be written as “Sea Wisteria,” and “Shun” (瞬) means “moment” or “instant,” which ironically contrasts his long-winded monologues.
      • He always keeps a bandage on his face, despite rarely being injured it’s purely for aesthetic effect.
      • His favorite phrase is “The Dark Reunion is always watching,” which he says at every opportunity.
      • Despite his dramatic claims, he is extremely weak in actual combat, often getting scared or backing down immediately.
      • His nickname “Jet-Black Wings” (Shikkoku no Tsubasa) is entirely self-proclaimed, but he insists that it holds great significance.

    Legacy

      • Shun Kaidou is one of the most entertaining and exaggerated characters in Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan, embodying the classic “chuunibyou” (delusional hero) archetype. His over-the-top declarations, wild fantasies, and cowardly reactions create some of the funniest moments in the series. While he is nowhere near the powerful warrior he believes himself to be, his genuine loyalty and courage in moments of crisis make him a surprisingly endearing character.
        • Though he may never truly defeat the Dark Reunion, Shun’s wild imagination and hilarious antics ensure that he remains one of the most beloved and iconic characters in the series.
