Kaede Honjou

Kaede Honjou (本条楓, Honjō Kaede), known in NewWorld Online as Maple (メイプル, Meipuru), is the main protagonist of *BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense.

Maple is a fair-skinned girl with short black hair, a small ahoge, and dark grey eyes. In the real world, she usually wears a white and pink striped hoodie paired with matching shorts, along with a compass-shaped white hair clip. This accessory carries over to her in-game avatar, which looks identical to her real appearance.

After defeating the Hydra, Maple’s beginner outfit is replaced with a black suit of armor accented in red. The armor features a flower crest and a rose emblem on the chest plate, worn over a red leotard with matching gloves and thigh-high stockings. Some areas are protected by heavy gauntlets, shin guards, boots, and breastplates, while other parts are covered only by red mesh fabric. Her armor also includes a cloak with a dark exterior and red underside. Maple’s primary weapon is the Replica of the Dark Night, a large black shield with red geometric designs and a central red gem. She also carries an ornate short sword that can inflict paralysis.

Later, after defeating another boss, Maple gains her powerful Atrocity form. This transformation has a monstrous black-skinned appearance with four muscular arms, spiked elbows, clawed fingers marked with red, and red leaf-like hair down her back. The form includes armored head plates, a tail, a cyan tongue, spiked legs, and a grotesque alien-like face. In the preview for season two she also gains a black tentacle after defeating an octopus-like monster.

Personality

Kaede is a simple and cheerful girl whose defining traits are her air headedness and love for fun. She is not competitive and rarely holds grudges, seeing almost everyone as a potential friend. Her open minded nature allows her to easily get along with other top players including Kasumi, Payne, Mii, and many others.

Despite her bright personality, Kaede can be clumsy and absent minded. She once bit her tongue during a live broadcast and immediately grew embarrassed. This absent minded behavior also spills into the real world. After becoming addicted to NewWorld Online, she would sometimes copy habits she developed in the game without realizing it.

Kaede can also be reckless especially when she first started playing. She chose to put all of her status points into VIT not because she was unaware but because she genuinely dislikes feeling pain. This is reflected in her well known statement I do not like to get hurt so I will put all of my status points into defense. Even so she is a surprisingly quick thinker who makes practical decisions, even if her choices seem odd at times such as when she attempted to clear the Hydra dungeon alone.

History

Kaede is an ordinary girl whose closest friend, Risa, often encouraged her to play video games. None of them ever caught her interest until she finally tried NewWorld Online.

Once she entered the world of NWO, Kaede found an experience unlike anything she had tried before. She quickly grew attached to the game and her real life dreams and instincts heavily influenced her actions in the virtual world. Her unusual choices often went against the typical logic of experienced players and caused unexpected challenges for the game administrators.

  • Her in-game nickname came from the English translation of her name, Kaede, which means Maple or Maple tree.
  • She has the same given name as her Japanese voice actress, Kaede (楓).
    • Her surname also is similar.
  • When Maple inheritsThe First‘s power, she becomesThe Third(Machine God).[2]
  • Apparently,NewWorld Onlineconsiders the act of eating an enemy as draining its life or HP Drain, which would entail that performing said the act would also restore HP. (So Maple is already a Vampire…)
  • Even though Players have their IRL statistics uploaded with their character (as Sally demonstrated with her agility and speed), Maple is shown to be comedically slower thanSyrup(pun intended). However, Episode 12 shows her running as fast as Mii and Payne while working together in the credits.
  • Her date of birth isOctober 22.
  • “They knew that something would happen the moment they took their eyes off her.”[4]
  • What the admins thought Maple was doing after the fourtheventrankings were mostly decided:[5]

  • Maple’s actions have led others to believe she’s a poster child of sorts. She draws them to her, and they even support the game sales.And so, without Maple knowing it, management had authorized her abilities.[6]
  • Maple’s Machine God form resembles the “Great Sacred Treasure” fromKid Icarus Uprising.
    • It also resembles the “Dendrobium” mobile armor fromMobile Suit Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory.
  • Maple’s Atrocity form bares a somewhat resemblance to Godzilla from theGodzilla series.
