Jin Mitaka (三鷹 仁, Mitaka Jin) is a major character in The Pet Girl of Sakurasou and the former resident of Room 103 in Sakura Dormitory. He is a third-year student at Suiko and the childhood friend of Misaki Kamiigusa. Known for his flirtatious nature, Jin has dated several girls including Misaki’s sister, Fuuka Kamiigusa but ends each relationship without lasting commitment.
Despite his reputation as a playboy, Jin harbors deep feelings for Misaki, which he struggles to confront due to his insecurities. In the fifth light novel, he and Misaki officially become a couple. Jin later pursues his dream of becoming a playwright by enrolling in a university in Osaka. Before his departure, he signs a marriage registration form for Misaki as a promise for their future. Misaki unexpectedly submits the form that same day, making their marriage official.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Jin is a calm, thoughtful, and introspective individual with a generally laid-back demeanor. He is emotionally perceptive and has a strong ability to read others, often gaining insight into a person’s character through observation. Though he appears confident on the surface especially with his flirtatious interactions he struggles with deep-seated insecurities, particularly in relation to Misaki Kamiigusa.
Despite harboring genuine feelings for Misaki, Jin distances himself from her romantically, believing he is unworthy of her due to the perceived gap in their talents. This sense of inadequacy leads him to adopt a playboy persona, dating multiple girls while avoiding serious commitment. He eventually confesses his love to Misaki but initially refuses to pursue a relationship further, still burdened by self-doubt.
As a writer, Jin is highly creative and contributes scripts for Misaki’s animation projects. While passionate about storytelling, he views his own work as average, a sentiment shared by critics and even Misaki herself. This self-critical outlook influences both his personal and professional decisions, ultimately motivating him to enroll at Osaka University of the Arts to improve his skills and forge a path as a playwright.
Appearance
Jin is a tall and slender young man with short dark brown hair and matching brown eyes. He typically maintains a composed and relaxed expression, often seen with a slight, knowing smile that reflects his easygoing personality. His fashion sense is clean and modest, usually wearing his school uniform or casual attire that complements his laid-back demeanor. Despite his unassuming appearance, Jin has a quiet charm that contributes to his reputation as a flirt and makes him popular among his peers.
Etymology
The given name Jin (仁) means “compassionate” or “benevolence,” reflecting a sense of empathy or kindness.
His surname Mitaka (三鷹) combines the characters for “three” (三, mi) and “hawk” or “falcon” (鷹, taka), possibly symbolizing sharp perception or independence.
Relationships
Misaki Kamiigusa
Jin shares a long and complex history with Misaki, his childhood friend and eventual wife. He cares deeply for her, and his concern for her well-being has influenced many of his life choices, including his decision to attend Suiko so he could remain close to her. Despite dating other women, Jin always has Misaki in mind. His reluctance to pursue her romantically stems from two internal conflicts: his belief that he is not good enough for her, and a sense of jealousy toward her overwhelming success, which at times made him want to see her fail though he ultimately continues to support her.
Even when Misaki’s energetic and impulsive behavior tests his patience, Jin remains grounded and often serves as the one person who can keep up with her. Their emotional journey culminates in a mutual confession, and eventually, marriage.
Sorata Kanda
Jin is one of Sorata’s closest confidants in Sakura Dormitory. The two share a supportive friendship, frequently confiding in one another about personal matters they struggle to share with others. Jin often offers advice to Sorata, particularly on relationships and life goals, while also leaning on him for emotional support regarding his complicated feelings for Misaki.
Fuuka Kamiigusa
Jin briefly dated Fuuka, Misaki’s older sister, as a way to distance himself from his feelings for Misaki. He viewed Fuuka as a safer alternative someone similar to Misaki but without the overwhelming emotional connection. This relationship, however, was ultimately unfulfilling and served to highlight Jin’s unresolved feelings and personal insecurities.
