Jeanne d’Arc

Jeanne d’Arc (ジャンヌ・ダルク, Jan’nu Daruku), also known by her Class Name Ruler (ルーラー, Rūrā), is a key figure in the Fate series. She serves as the Ruler-class Servant in the Great Holy Grail War depicted in Fate/Apocrypha and is one of the Servants summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru during the Grand Order conflicts in Fate/Grand Order. Jeanne is inspired by the historical French heroine and saint, embodying her faith, leadership, and unwavering dedication to justice.

Appearance

Jeanne d’Arc during battle

Ruler takes on the physical form of Laeticia, a French girl chosen for her compatibility with Jeanne d’Arc in terms of spiritual alignment, physical build, personality, and Magical Energy. While Laeticia’s overall appearance mirrors Jeanne’s, her bust size is slightly larger. Ruler is described as having striking amethyst-colored eyes that radiate purity. Her beauty is unique, lacking the perfection of a homunculus or the heart-fluttering cuteness of someone like Astolfo, yet possessing a wondrous, almost ethereal quality.

When entering battle, Ruler transforms into her battle attire, which includes armor woven from Magical Energy that envelopes her form. Beneath her gauntlet, she bears engraved Command Spells, and additional special Command Spells designed to control Servants during the Great Holy Grail War are emblazoned on her back in a pattern resembling an angel.

Her resemblance to King Arthur (Artoria Pendragon) is notable, as it led Gilles de Rais to mistake Artoria for Jeanne d’Arc during their encounter.

Personality

Jeanne d’Arc is described as a reserved and composed individual in her role as a Servant, embodying the dignity and determination required of her position. However, her natural personality is that of a humble, quiet, and straightforward sixteen-year-old girl. She values order and rules, prioritizing the fair execution of the Holy Grail War. At her core, Jeanne believes in the worth of all participants, both people and Heroic Spirits, and views them as equally important.

Jeanne and her host, Laeticia, do not exhibit dual personalities. Instead, their identities are merged seamlessly, with Jeanne remaining the dominant consciousness. Laeticia’s personality influences Jeanne subtly, particularly in areas outside of Jeanne’s usual expertise. For instance, while Jeanne could not read or write during her lifetime, Laeticia’s modern education grants her these abilities. Laeticia’s shyness around men also affects Jeanne, making her interactions with Sieg, for example, awkward unless she keeps her distance.

Jeanne does not have a personal wish for the Holy Grail. Her sole desire is for the Holy Grail War to be conducted properly, and she respects any wish presented to the Grail so long as it does not threaten the world’s destruction. She carries no regrets about her life and harbors no desire for revenge or salvation, content in the knowledge of the life she lived.

Jeanne’s unwavering faith is central to her character. She believes God has never abandoned humanity, even in her darkest moments. To her, prayer is a selfless act, a way to comfort and honor the Lord rather than seek blessings for herself. She sees prayer as essential as breathing, dedicating moments of stillness to reconnect with her faith and divine purpose.

Despite her solemn demeanor, Jeanne has quirks that reflect her humanity. She has a playful side, such as her habit of comically poking Gilles de Rais in the eyes when he least expects it. In the “Servant Summer Festival” event of Fate/Grand Order, Jeanne reveals a talent for drawing and expresses a deep joy in creating stories through manga. She even remarks that if she were not a Heroic Spirit, she would pursue a life as a mangaka.

Jeanne also has a nurturing, elder-sisterly side. She longs to be an older sister, referring to Ritsuka Fujimaru, Jeanne Alter, and Jeanne Alter Santa Lily as her younger siblings. In reality, Jeanne d’Arc was the youngest of five siblings, making this a reflection of an unfulfilled wish.

In her childhood, Jeanne was often regarded as “one of the boys” by her peers, a trait Gilles de Rais reportedly admired. Her earthy habits and simple joys, such as lying on hay to sleep or gazing at the sky while neglecting chores, further emphasize her humble origins and down-to-earth personality.

Role in the Story

Jeanne acts as the impartial mediator of the Great Holy Grail War, tasked with overseeing the conflict between the Black and Red Factions. Her role as a Ruler-class Servant prevents her from aligning with either side, but she becomes entangled in the war due to her interactions with Sieg, a homunculus who becomes central to the conflict. Jeanne’s devotion to Sieg highlights her humanity and capacity for love, despite her divine role.

Jeanne serves as one of the Servants summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru during the Grand Order conflicts. She provides guidance and support during battles, often taking on a protective role for Ritsuka and their allies. Jeanne’s unwavering faith in humanity serves as a source of inspiration throughout the various Singularities and Lostbelts.
