Jae-Ha (ジェハ, Jeha), also known as the Ryokuryuu (Green Dragon), is one of the Four Dragon Warriors in Akatsuki no Yona. As the current Green Dragon, Jae-Ha possesses the blood of the green dragon deity, granting him extraordinary abilities in his right leg, which allows him to leap great heights and distances, effectively giving him the ability to fly. A former member of Captain Gi-Gan’s pirate crew, Jae-Ha is the fourth person and third Dragon Warrior to join Yona and Hak on their journey.
Appearance
Jae-Ha playfully interacting with Hak, showcasing their dynamic camaraderie and mutual respect as allies
Jae-Ha is a tall and handsome young man with a charismatic and flirtatious demeanor that matches his striking features. He has long green hair, usually tied in a high ponytail, and vivid green eyes, symbolizing his connection to the Green Dragon. His athletic build and graceful movements reflect his strength and agility as the Ryokuryuu.
Jae-Ha’s outfit is practical yet stylish, reflecting his days as a pirate and his free-spirited personality. He wears dark pants paired with knee-high boots, a loose-fitting shirt, and a long green sash tied around his waist. His attire often includes accessories such as earrings or armbands, which add to his roguish charm.
Personality
Jae-Ha is a free-spirited, confident, and flirtatious individual, valuing freedom above all else. His rebellious nature stems from his childhood, where he was imprisoned and mistreated due to his powers. As a result, he despises the idea of servitude and initially distrusts those who try to seek his aid. Despite his flirtatious and carefree exterior, Jae-Ha has a deep sense of loyalty and compassion, particularly toward those he comes to respect and care for.
Jae-Ha’s sharp wit and playful nature often make him the group’s source of humor, but his past experiences have also instilled a layer of wisdom and maturity in him. While he enjoys teasing his companions, especially Hak, he is deeply empathetic and willing to risk his life for his friends. Over time, he grows to see the Dragon Warriors as his brothers and Yona as someone worth following and protecting.
Role in the Story
Early Life and Escape from the Ryokuryuu Village
Jae-Ha was born into the Green Dragon’s village, where he was revered as the next Ryokuryuu but also imprisoned and mistreated due to the villagers’ fear of his powers. The villagers believed that revealing the Ryokuryuu’s existence to outsiders would bring unwanted attention and potential danger to their village, so they kept him locked away.
Jae-Ha’s childhood was marked by physical and emotional abuse, particularly from his predecessor, Garou, the previous Green Dragon. Garou’s dying body retained enough strength to prevent Jae-Ha from escaping, and he frequently punished Jae-Ha to ensure his compliance. However, once Garou’s powers fully transferred to Jae-Ha, he became strong enough to break free and fled the village at the age of twelve, vowing never to be confined again.
Life as a Pirate
After escaping, Jae-Ha wandered aimlessly, often getting into trouble due to his reckless behavior. His life changed when he joined a group of pirates led by Captain Gi-Gan in the port town of Awa. Gi-Gan treated Jae-Ha with kindness and compassion, becoming a maternal figure to him and giving him a sense of purpose. During this time, Jae-Ha earned the nickname “The Flying Pirate” due to his abilities and martial prowess.
Joining Yona’s Journey
When Yona and her companions arrived in Awa seeking the Green Dragon, Jae-Ha initially denied his identity, fearing that joining them would mean sacrificing his freedom. He even acted hostile toward Yona, believing she would force him into servitude. However, as he observed Yona’s bravery and determination, particularly during her efforts to stop human trafficking in Awa, Jae-Ha’s opinion of her changed.
Moved by her courage and inspired by her vision, Jae-Ha chose to join Yona’s journey, not out of obligation but out of a desire to protect her and witness her growth. Over time, Jae-Ha grew deeply loyal to Yona, seeing her as a friend and leader rather than a master. His bonds with the other Dragon Warriors, particularly Hak, also strengthened, and he became an integral member of the group.
