Did You Know?

Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Izuna Hatsuse

Izuna Hatsuse (初瀬 いずな,Hatsuse Izuna) is a prominent character in the series No Game No Life. She is a Werebeast girl and served as the former ambassador of the Werebeast race to Immanity. After Sora and Shiro compelled the Werebeasts to join the Commonwealth of Elkia, Izuna was tasked by Miko to follow and learn from them.

Izuna is characterized by her unique traits, particularly her enjoyment of being petted by Sora and Shiro, who often stroke her fur and tail. This playful interaction is a source of amusement, despite her grandfather’s disapproval. Furthermore, Izuna exhibits several similarities to Sora and Shiro, including a lack of common sense, a tendency toward arrogance, and exceptional intelligence and competence in gaming.

Izuna Hatsuse possesses a distinctive blend of animal and human traits typical of Werebeasts. She features fox-like ears and a fluffy tail, which enhance her animalistic appearance. Izuna has dark purple hair and chestnut eyes; however, in the light novel, she is depicted with black hair and black eyes. Her pupils are vertically slitted, resembling those of a cat.

When utilizing her “Blood Break” ability, Izuna’s tail extends, and all the fur on her body transforms to a striking red color. Additionally, she displays a red symbol on her forehead during this transformation

Shiro and Sora delighted by Izuna’s fur.

Izuna Hatsuse is cherished by Sora and Shiro for her extreme cuteness, and they delight in petting her fur. In return, Izuna shares a fondness for the siblings, expressing enjoyment in their petting techniques, which she prefers over those of her grandfather, Hatsuse Ino. This dynamic fosters a sibling-like bond among the trio.

While still learning the Imanity language, Izuna has developed a habit of adding “desu” (a phrase meaning “please” or “thank you” in dubbed anime) to the end of her statements in an effort to sound more polite.

Her personality primarily reflects the innocence of her age, yet she demonstrates remarkable gaming competence, often representing the Werebeasts in national competitions against other races. In the English-translated light novels and anime, Izuna exhibits a quirk of unknowingly cursing, often unaware of the meanings behind the words she uses.

Before her encounter with Sora and Shiro, Izuna found little joy in gaming, as her training focused solely on winning rather than enjoying the experience.

Background

Izuna was born into the Warbeast race, specifically within the Eastern Federation, a nation known for its isolation and self-sufficiency. She was raised by her grandfather, Ino Hatsuse, a highly respected elder within their race and a close advisor to the Warbeast leader. As a Warbeast, Izuna possesses innate abilities such as heightened senses, extraordinary physical strength, and agility—traits that all Warbeasts are born with.

Izuna was likely trained from a very young age to hone her Warbeast instincts, especially in games and combat. Her race places great importance on survival through gaming since all conflicts in Disboard are resolved through games, and the Warbeasts take this very seriously. Her grandfather, Ino, was especially protective of her and taught her the importance of fighting for the survival and honor of their nation.

The Eastern Federation, where Izuna grew up, is the Warbeast nation and one of the most powerful forces in Disboard. Due to their isolationist policies and superior physical abilities, the Warbeasts have remained undefeated for a long time, keeping their territories safe from other races through unbeatable virtual reality games.

The Eastern Federation developed advanced gaming technology to create realistic virtual worlds where they can challenge other races, ensuring that no one could understand their strategies and win against them. Izuna, despite her young age, became one of the top representatives of the Eastern Federation, playing these virtual games to protect their nation.

Abilities

Strengths

Izuna Hatsuse is a rare and unique individual, endowed with the remarkable physical capabilities typical of Werebeasts, along with the exceptional Blood Break ability, which is possessed by only a select few within her race. When activated, her Blood Break form transforms her appearance dramatically, showcasing bulging muscles and heightened senses, but she can only maintain this form for a few seconds due to the imminent risk of death.

Despite the limitations of her Blood Break ability, Izuna should not be underestimated. She exhibits an incredible capacity for rapid learning, particularly regarding game mechanics. For example, she was able to learn to read the Imanity language from a gamebook overnight while Stephanie Dola slept. Although she is not yet fluent in the language, her quick intellect and determination indicate that it is only a matter of time before she achieves fluency.

Weakness

While she is considered “mature” among the Werebeasts at the age of eight, Izuna remains naïve regarding adult-related subjects, which can lead to misunderstandings in more complex situations.

Trivia

    • Unique Heritage: Among Izuna’s many siblings and relatives—descendants of her grandfather and his 30 “grandmothers”—she is the only one who inherited the Kekkai ability from Hatsuse Ino, marking her as a unique figure within the Werebeast lineage.

    • Family Life: Izuna grew up in a residential area with her parents, who provided a nurturing environment. Her grandfather visited her daily, fostering a strong familial bond that influences her character.

    • Grooming Habits: Izuna has a distinct approach to cleanliness; she rarely showers or bathes unless absolutely necessary, preferring instead to groom herself by licking her fur. This habit is characteristic of her animalistic nature.
