Issho (Fujitora)

Issho (Fujitora), better known by his alias Fujitora, is a Marine Admiral and a staunch advocate for reform within the World Government. A proponent of “Humane Justice,” Fujitora is deeply driven by his moral convictions, often challenging the status quo to uphold what he believes is right. Formerly the captain of a guard force in the Aoi Kingdom, he was conscripted into the Marines through a World Military Draft during the two-year timeskip, alongside Ryokugyu, to fill the vacancies left by Kuzan’s resignation and Sakazuki’s promotion. Fujitora’s campaign to abolish the Seven Warlords of the Sea system, which succeeded during the recent Levely, marks him as a transformative figure within the Marines. He made his first physical appearance in the Dressrosa Arc, where his mission to capture Luffy and Trafalgar Law highlighted his complex role as an antagonist and reformist.

Appearance in Anime

Before joining the Marines, Issho served as the captain of a guard force in the Aoi Kingdom. Disillusioned by the atrocities he witnessed, he voluntarily blinded himself to avoid seeing the world’s evils, choosing instead to rely on his heightened other senses and moral judgment. During the World Military Draft, Issho was conscripted into the Marines due to his extraordinary strength and unwavering sense of justice, rising to the rank of Admiral.

His philosophy of “Humane Justice” sets him apart from many other Marines, emphasizing compassion and fairness over strict adherence to orders. This belief system guided his campaign to abolish the Seven Warlords of the Sea, a system he viewed as corrupt and detrimental to the world’s balance.

Appearance

Fujitora is a tall, muscular man with a stern yet calm expression. His most distinctive feature is his blindness, which he compensates for with exceptional Observation Haki. He wears the traditional Marine Admiral coat draped over his shoulders, along with a purple kimono tied with a sash. His signature weapon is a shikomizue (a sword hidden within a cane), which he uses with devastating precision and strength.

Personality

Fujitora is a kind, honorable, and empathetic individual who prioritizes the well-being of the innocent above all else. He often questions the actions of the Marines and the World Government, aligning himself more with the ideals of justice than with blind loyalty. Despite his high rank, Fujitora is humble and unafraid to admit his mistakes or stand against his superiors when he feels they are in the wrong.

While he carries out his duties as an Admiral, Fujitora does so with a focus on minimizing harm to civilians, often clashing with more rigid or corrupt figures within the Marines. His calm demeanor belies his immense strength and unwavering resolve.

Role in the Story

Dressrosa Arc
Fujitora’s first mission as an Admiral was to address the alliance between Monkey D. Luffy and Trafalgar Law and to investigate the situation on Dressrosa. While tasked with capturing the two pirates, he also uncovered the tyranny of Donquixote Doflamingo. Fujitora’s actions during this arc demonstrated his adherence to “Humane Justice,” as he prioritized the safety of Dressrosa’s citizens over blindly following orders. In the aftermath of Doflamingo’s defeat, Fujitora publicly apologized to King Riku for the Marines’ failure to prevent Dressrosa’s suffering, even bowing before him—an unprecedented act for a Marine Admiral. His decision to let the Straw Hats leave Dressrosa unscathed further highlighted his unique moral compass.

Levely and Abolishment of the Seven Warlords
Fujitora spearheaded the campaign to abolish the Seven Warlords of the Sea system, which he viewed as inherently corrupt and harmful. His efforts succeeded during the Levely, marking a significant shift in the balance of power in the One Piece world.

Other Appearances
Fujitora plays a recurring role in the series’ post-timeskip narrative, representing a faction of the Marines committed to reform and justice. His clashes with Sakazuki (Akainu) over differing philosophies highlight the growing divide within the organization.

Relationships

  • Monkey D. Luffy and Trafalgar Law
Fujitora acknowledges their actions in defeating Doflamingo but remains committed to his duty as a Marine. Despite this, he often shows respect for their resolve and morality.

  • Donquixote Doflamingo
Fujitora viewed Doflamingo’s rule over Dressrosa as an abomination and worked indirectly to ensure his downfall.

  • Sakazuki (Akainu)
Fujitora’s relationship with Sakazuki is tense due to their opposing interpretations of justice. Fujitora’s actions often challenge Sakazuki’s authority.

  • Ryokugyu
As a fellow Admiral conscripted during the World Military Draft, Ryokugyu represents a contrast to Fujitora’s reformist ideals.

Trivia

    • Fujitora’s blindness is self-inflicted, a decision he made to avoid witnessing the world’s cruelty and corruption.
      • His Zushi Zushi no Mi (Gravity-Gravity Fruit) grants him the ability to manipulate gravity, allowing him to summon meteors, levitate objects, and create devastating gravitational forces.
      • Fujitora’s bow to King Riku in Dressrosa is one of the most iconic moments of the series, symbolizing his commitment to justice and accountability.
