Isla

Isla (アイラ, Aira) is one of the main characters in the anime series Plastic Memories. She is a Giftia, an advanced android with human-like qualities, and was renowned as the top marksman of Terminal Service One. Originally partnered with Kazuki Kuwanomi, Isla later becomes the partner of Tsukasa Mizugaki after her previous partnership ends. Known for her quiet demeanor and professionalism, Isla plays a central role in the story’s exploration of loss, memory, and emotional connection.

Appearance in Anime

At the beginning of the series, Isla is portrayed as a Giftia who displays little to no outward emotion. However, her partnership with Tsukasa Mizugaki prompts significant emotional growth, allowing her to gradually open up and connect more deeply with those around her. Isla is gentle and innocent, often struggling to navigate social situations and understand human interactions. Her primary concern becomes Tsukasa’s happiness, and she dedicates herself to supporting him in any way she can. She is prone to jealousy and harbors a strong desire to be helpful and meaningful to Tsukasa, especially as her retrieval date approaches.

Isla is compassionate and empathetic, caring deeply about the emotions and well-being of others. She was the first employee at Terminal Service One to prioritize the emotional needs of clients during Giftia retrievals. Inspired by Isla’s example, Kazuki Kuwanomi encouraged the rest of the staff to adopt a more sensitive and considerate approach after a difficult incident involving one of Kazuki’s own assignments.

Appearance

Isla is depicted as a beautiful, petite young girl and is one of the shortest characters in Plastic Memories. She has long, light purple (or silver) hair styled in twin tails, with soft bangs that frame her forehead. Her striking red eyes further emphasize her delicate and doll-like appearance.

Isla typically wears the standard white Terminal Service uniform, accented with black and orange details, during her work at Terminal Service One. Early in the series, she is seen exclusively in her uniform, reflecting her reserved and emotionally distant demeanor. However, as she regains her sense of happiness and becomes more expressive thanks to her growing bond with Tsukasa Mizugaki Isla begins wearing various casual outfits, particularly when going on outings or dates with Tsukasa.

Biography

Isla originally worked as the partner of Kazuki Kuwanomi at Terminal Service One. Their partnership ended after a traumatic retrieval operation involving Michiru’s father. The attempt went badly, resulting in Kazuki sustaining an injury and the target being destroyed by R. Security. Following this incident, Kazuki chose to dissolve their partnership, and Isla ceased field work.

Afterward, Isla took on administrative duties within Terminal Service One. She focused on desk work, cared for herbs in a small garden outside the office, and regularly served tea to her coworkers. She remained out of field operations due to the department’s requirement that employees work in pairs on retrieval assignments.

Isla eventually returned to fieldwork after being paired with Tsukasa Mizugaki. By the time their partnership began, Isla was already nearing the end of her operational lifespan, with only about 1,000 hours remaining. As her condition deteriorated, she became physically weaker and was unable to perform at her former level. Despite this, Tsukasa chose to remain by her side out of deep affection and commitment.

Later, Kazuki formally dissolved their partnership after Tsukasa confessed his love for Isla, as part of a plan intended to help both of them confront their feelings. This separation ultimately brought Isla and Tsukasa closer, allowing them to better understand each other and solidify their bond.

Philosophy

As a Giftia, Isla possesses a thoughtful and mature philosophy regarding the finite lifespan of her kind. While she plants hope in other Giftias and their owners by wishing them luck and happiness, she remains fully aware of the inevitable fate that all Giftias must face. During retrievals, before erasing a Giftia’s memories, Isla often offers parting words: “I hope that someday, you’ll be reunited with the one you cherish.”

This sentiment reflects Isla’s belief that, although memories may fade or be erased, the emotional bonds formed between Giftias and their owners endure beyond memory. She views these connections as eternal, symbolizing an unbreakable link that transcends the limitations of time and memory.

Relationships

Tsukasa Mizugaki
From the moment they met, Tsukasa treated Isla with kindness and patience. Despite Isla’s initial clumsiness and mistakes during their early retrieval missions, Tsukasa consistently encouraged and supported her. This gentle and understanding nature led Isla to develop deep feelings for him. When Tsukasa eventually confessed his love, Isla initially rejected him not because she did not return his feelings, but because she feared that growing closer would only cause him greater pain when her limited lifespan came to an end. Tsukasa ultimately reassured Isla that he wished to stay by her side, and the two spent her remaining time together as a devoted and loving couple.

Kazuki Kuwanomi
Kazuki was Isla’s first partner at Terminal Service One. Isla cherished their time working together, and the two shared warm memories, including moments of leisure at a nearby amusement park. Following the tragic and failed retrieval of Michiru’s father, during which Kazuki was injured, Kazuki chose to end their partnership, believing it was in Isla’s best interest. Later, Kazuki came to regret that decision and encouraged Tsukasa to take good care of Isla during their time as partners.

Michiru Kinushima
Michiru serves as a trusted confidant for Isla, particularly regarding Isla’s feelings for Tsukasa. Isla confides in Michiru about her emotional struggles, admitting that thoughts of Tsukasa make her heart race and leave her confused. Michiru provides Isla with advice and support as Isla navigates her growing affection for Tsukasa.

Trivia

    • Isla is shown to use reading glasses, as seen in Episode 3 when she picks a herb for Tsukasa Mizugaki.
      • At the end of Episode 13, when Tsukasa is introduced to his new Giftia partner, the new character is seen wearing shoes identical to Isla’s, except without socks, a subtle visual callback to Isla.
