Iroha Tamaki

Iroha Tamaki (環いろは, Tamaki Iroha) is one of the five main magical girls and the central protagonist of Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica Side Story. She plays a leading role in both the anime and mobile game adaptations, serving as the key figure in uncovering the mysteries surrounding Kamihama City. Iroha’s journey begins as she searches for her missing younger sister, Ui Tamaki, which draws her deeper into the complex world of magical girls, Witches, and the secrets hidden within the system that governs them.

Appearance

Iroha Tamaki is a young girl with long pastel pink hair, worn in a low side ponytail and styled with delicate braids. Two thin strands frame her cheeks, and she has straight-cut bangs that cover her forehead. Her eyes are a soft reddish-pink, complementing the overall gentle and subdued tone of her appearance.

As a magical girl, Iroha wears a unique outfit that resembles a stylish hunter’s uniform. It consists of a skintight brown bodysuit layered with a black crop top and matching shorts. Over this, she wears a short, pleated light pink skirt that fades into white near the hem, secured with a pink belt. A white cape with pink trim and vertical pink stripes running down the hood adds a sense of elegance and fluidity to her design.

She also wears black gloves and black thigh-high boots, which are laced up in the front. Her weapon, a crossbow, is brown with soft pink accents and is fitted with two pink gems, one on each end. The crossbow is strapped securely to her arm using buckled leather bands. Iroha’s Soul Gem is worn as a pendant on a gold necklace, resting just below her collar.

Personality

Iroha Tamaki is portrayed as a shy and reserved individual, yet she possesses a quiet strength and strong sense of determination. Kind-hearted and empathetic, she often puts the needs of others before her own and shows deep concern for her fellow magical girls. Her gentle and caring nature makes her a reliable and comforting presence among her peers.

While her personality shares similarities with Madoka Kaname from the main Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica series, Iroha is notably more strong-willed and action-oriented when faced with adversity. She tends to worry about those around her and often takes responsibility for protecting others, even at personal risk. Despite not being especially up to date with trends or technology often struggling with her phone—she remains focused and grounded.

Though she is typically soft-spoken and modest, Iroha becomes fiercely determined when circumstances call for it, revealing a courageous and self-sacrificing side in the face of danger or injustice.

Relationship

Ui Tamaki
Ui is Iroha Tamaki’s younger sister and the catalyst for her becoming a magical girl. Ui was frequently hospitalized due to an unspecified illness, and Iroha devoted much of her time to visiting and caring for her. Their close bond was central to Iroha’s life.

Power and Abilities

Iroha Tamaki’s primary magical ability is healing, officially referred to as Reversal in Arc 2, Chapter 12 of the Magia Record mobile game. This power allows her to recover the health of herself and others, making her especially effective in supporting allies during battle. Her healing ability is not only practical in combat scenarios but also symbolic of her role as a protector and nurturer among the magical girls.

In addition to her healing magic, Iroha utilizes several powerful offensive techniques. One of her signature attacks is Strada Futuro (ストラーダ・フトゥーロ, Path to the Future), a move derived from her Magia in the game. This technique is often used to defeat Witches and represents her determination to move forward and create a better future, despite the suffering tied to the magical girl system.

Iroha also has access to the cooperative technique known as Connect (コネクト), a unique ability in Magia Record that allows magical girls to link together by joining hands. When activated, this technique enhances their weapons and abilities, creating more powerful variants. Iroha’s Connect is considered the strongest in the series, capable of significantly boosting her partner’s strength in combat.

Etymology

The name Iroha (いろは) is written entirely in hiragana, which gives it a soft, traditional feel. Although no official kanji is provided, a possible kanji representation is 彩羽, which means “colorful feather.” This interpretation aligns with Iroha’s magical girl motif, as feathers are a recurring visual element in her design and transformation sequences.

Her surname, Tamaki (環), means “ring” or “circle.” In the context of the Puella Magi universe, rings are notably used by magical girls to disguise their Soul Gems, which serve as the core of their magical powers. The symbolism of a ring may also reflect themes of connection, continuity, and the binding contracts central to the magical girl system.

Trivia

    • Iroha Tamaki’s birthday is officially listed as August 22nd, placing her under the zodiac sign Leo. Her birthday was chosen to commemorate the release of the Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica Side Story mobile game. She is one of only three characters in the entire Puella Magi franchise with a canonically confirmed birthday—the others being Madoka Kaname and Jeanne d’Arc.
    • Iroha’s hobby is cooking, which reflects her nurturing personality and quiet domesticity. Interestingly, according to Ultimate Madoka’s Magical Girl Story, Iroha was not originally destined to become a magical girl. The Magia Record timeline is described as an anomaly where Iroha’s transformation takes place. In one parallel world explored in Madoka・Iroha’s Magical Girl Story, Iroha dies in a car accident, and as a result, Ui Tamaki is never healed.
    • In Episode 8 of the anime, Iroha is seen using a MEDIAS BR IS11N cellphone model. Additionally, she, along with Yachiyo Nanami and Tsuruno Yui, are among the few magical girls shown speaking directly with their Doppels on screen, an ability not commonly displayed in the franchise.
