Inukashi

Inukashi (犬貸し), whose name literally means “dog lender” in Japanese, is a recurring character in the No.6 light novel series, as well as its manga and anime adaptations. Known for their street-smart attitude and survival instincts, Inukashi runs a makeshift hotel in West Block, where they rent out dogs and rooms to people seeking warmth using the body heat of their dogs as a source of shelter during harsh weather. The dogs are fiercely loyal to Inukashi, treating them as their leader and responding to their commands without hesitation.

In addition to managing the hotel, Inukashi also deals in trade and information. They buy and sell food, clothing, and intelligence to anyone willing to pay the right price, making them a key informant and resource broker within the impoverished underground society outside No.6.

Appearance in Anime

Inukashi is described as short and slender, with a lean frame suited to the harsh lifestyle of West Block. They have long, dark hair, tan skin, and sharp dark brown eyes. Their attire is simple and worn reflecting the limited resources available to them. Inukashi typically wears a faded maroon, low-cut, long-sleeved button-up blouse, paired with old blue pants that are frayed at the hems. A gray belt secures their outfit, and they wear tan, strapped sandals on their feet.

Their appearance often blends practicality with necessity, shaped more by survival than style. Despite their rough clothing and weathered look, Inukashi maintains a commanding presence especially among the dogs they lead and the people who rely on their services.

Personality

Inukashi is fiercely independent and deeply distrustful of people, often expressing the belief that humans are inherently despicable. Blunt and quick-tempered, they have a sharp tongue and a tendency to speak without restraint traits that lead characters like Rikiga to view them as brash or unruly. Inukashi displays a confident, self-aware attitude, often appearing cocky and unfiltered in conversations. However, this hardened exterior conceals a softer side, most evident in their deep affection for dogs, which they consistently describe as kinder and more loyal than humans.

Despite considering Shion an oddball due to his appearance and naïveté, Inukashi is intrigued by his nature and eventually offers him work. As they spend more time together, Inukashi begins to reflect on the possibility of becoming emotionally attached, something unfamiliar and unsettling for them. While their exact age is not confirmed, it is implied that Inukashi is younger than both Shion and Nezumi. Nevertheless, they engage in far riskier dealings to sustain both themselves and their dogs, displaying a level of streetwise maturity beyond their years.

Cunning and highly aware of their surroundings, Inukashi understands the brutal realities of West Block and operates with calculated survival instincts. Rikiga once remarked that Inukashi may be even tougher than Nezumi, commenting, “Maybe I should watch out more for the dog than the fox.”

Inukashi harbors a deep fear of pain, suffering, and death feelings they do not attempt to hide. This vulnerability is occasionally exploited by Nezumi, who uses it to manipulate them in certain situations. Despite this, Inukashi gradually develops an understanding of compassion beyond their devotion to animals. This shift begins when Shion entrusts them with the care of a baby, planting the seeds of empathy and responsibility toward others.

Over time, Inukashi grows to care deeply for both Shion and, to a lesser extent, Nezumi. When the two infiltrate the Correctional Facility, Inukashi openly wishes for their survival, despite pretending otherwise. They are visibly moved when Nezumi promises to sing for their dying dogs, a gesture that carries great emotional weight. In a rare moment of sincerity, Nezumi also promises to sing for Inukashi’s soul if they were ever to die, a promise that Inukashi takes to heart.

History

Little is known about Inukashi’s early life or family origins. As a baby, they were cared for by an old man, though it was primarily the man’s dog who nurtured them, an experience so formative that Inukashi often refers to the dog as their “mother.” From a young age, they lived closely among dogs, developing a deep, almost instinctual connection with them that would define their identity and way of life.

Growing up in the harsh conditions of West Block, Inukashi learned to survive by trading goods and information, eventually establishing a small business that included renting out dogs and rooms in a makeshift hotel. Their bond with dogs became not just emotional, but practical, as the animals helped generate warmth and protection.

Later, while searching for resources, Inukashi stumbled into Nezumi’s underground hideout, hoping to scavenge supplies. Nezumi caught them rummaging through his belongings and accused them of theft. This tense first encounter marked the beginning of their antagonistic but mutually dependent relationship one that would continue to evolve through their shared involvement with Shion and the unraveling secrets of No.6.

Story

Inukashi first meets Shion when he arrives at their hotel in West Block alongside Nezumi. Initially wary of outsiders, Inukashi quickly sizes up Shion’s unusual demeanor and appearance, but tolerates his presence due to Nezumi’s involvement.

In preparation for the Sacred Festival, Inukashi devises a plan involving the city’s cleaning robots. During a covert meeting with a government worker, Getsuyaka, Inukashi demands that the cleaning robots be taken out of commission for the day. They explain that in West Block, the robots not only handle waste but also affect the lives of the people there. Inukashi requests that the inspection time for the robots be rescheduled and suggests that the worker fabricate a plausible excuse if questioned.

As part of the plan, Inukashi instructs Getsuyaka to ensure that the robots expel their collected garbage on the day of the festival and slip in a container of odor emitting pills not harmful, but potent enough to create an unforgettable stench. They describe it as a harmless prank intended to mock the privileged elites who have likely never seen real waste before. When Getsuyaka hesitates, Inukashi reminds him that he has already provided sensitive workplace information in exchange for silver coins, implying that backing out is not an option.

Although Inukashi momentarily pressures him, they calm the situation by raising the payment to three silver coins, sealing the arrangement. They reflect that the plan, while risky, might become a lifeline for Shion and Nezumi and that at this point, their only option is to place their faith in fate.

Later, while loading a wagon, Inukashi encounters Rikiga and jokingly scolds him not to make Shion Jr. cry. Though they claim the baby is merely along as a “babysitter,” Inukashi embraces the child when he affectionately calls them “Mama,” hinting at the bond they’ve formed. Despite harboring doubts about whether the plan will succeed, Inukashi insists they’ve done all they can by following Nezumi’s instructions to the letter.

When one of Nezumi’s rats arrives with a message, Inukashi reads the letter and confirms that everything will begin the following night. Holding Shion Jr. in their arms, they ask the rat to pass along a final message to Nezumi that they’ve fulfilled their part of the plan.

In a reflective moment, Inukashi asks Rikiga whether he believes Shion and Nezumi will return. Though Rikiga expresses doubt, Inukashi responds with quiet hope: “Miracles can happen if we make them happen.” Lifting Shion Jr. into the air, Inukashi makes a solemn yet celebratory declaration for the present, and for the future they are all fighting to protect.

Relationships

Nezumi
Inukashi and Nezumi share a tense, business-centered relationship marked by frequent arguments and mutual suspicion. Their first meeting, revealed in No.6 Beyond, occurred shortly after Nezumi escaped from No.6 and settled in West Block. Inukashi, believing Nezumi’s underground hideout to be abandoned, broke in and was confronted. From the beginning, their dynamic was contentious.

Resentment between them deepened when Nezumi demanded an exorbitant fee to sing for the soul of Inukashi’s dying mother, an elderly dog who had raised Inukashi since childhood. Despite the bitterness, Inukashi later realized that Nezumi, like Shion, had never ridiculed their deep connection to the dog, a gesture that held meaning. While their interactions often involve sharp words and threats, a sense of mutual understanding exists beneath the surface. Inukashi expresses concern for both Nezumi and Shion’s safety when they infiltrate the Correctional Facility, suggesting that, despite the friction, Nezumi has earned a level of respect and emotional regard.

Shion
Initially wary of Shion, Inukashi found his personality and appearance strange, even referring to him dismissively as Nezumi’s “pet.” However, Shion’s kindness and genuine concern for others gradually earned Inukashi’s trust. Unlike their dynamic with Nezumi, Inukashi treated Shion more gently even before they truly got to know him sharing lighter interactions and eventually offering him a job washing dogs. Over time, Inukashi grew protective of Shion and developed a soft spot for him, especially moved by his empathy and idealism.

Rikiga
Inukashi and Rikiga maintain a combative relationship fueled by mutual disdain. They frequently exchange insults Inukashi refers to him as “old man,” while Rikiga calls them a “brat.” Although they cooperate later in the story, it is always begrudgingly. Inukashi openly disapproves of Rikiga’s alcoholic habits and often complains about the smell of alcohol lingering around him. Despite their bickering, they share common goals that occasionally force them to work together.

Getsuyaku
Getsuyaku is a low-level worker within No.6 who manages waste from the Correctional Facility. He becomes one of Inukashi’s key business contacts, trading discarded food and clothing in exchange for money. Inukashi resells these goods in West Block’s underground markets. Later, Inukashi recruits Getsuyaku to assist in their sabotage efforts paying him to tamper with cleaning robots during the Sacred Festival. The plan includes releasing foul-smelling capsules and garbage throughout the facility as an act of rebellion. Although hesitant, Getsuyaku ultimately cooperates, swayed by Inukashi’s persuasion and threats.
