Inori Yuzuriha (楪 いのり, Yuzuriha Inori) is the female protagonist of Guilty Crown and a key member of the resistance group Funeral Parlor. She also serves as the vocalist for the internet music group Egoist, using her singing to convey emotions and messages that align with the resistance movement. Throughout the series, she plays a pivotal role in aiding Shu Ouma, both as a fighter and as his primary emotional support.
Appearance

Appearance in Anime
Inori Yuzuriha was a strikingly beautiful girl with long, light pink hair that transitioned into a deeper hot pink towards the ends. She typically styled her hair into two pigtails, secured with two tube-like accessories, and wore a small red hair clip on the left side of her face. She had distinctive red eyes, a slender physique, small glossed lips, and delicate facial features, giving her a fragile and ethereal appearance. Standing at approximately 166 cm, she had a graceful yet fragile-looking frame with thin legs.
Her combat attire consisted of a red leotard with a large cut-out in the midsection, accompanied by red-orange detached sleeves adorned with floral patterns, and high red gloves. Outside of battle, she often wore a black short dress with white lining and red ribbons at the hem. When attending school, she adhered to the standard school uniform. At certain points in the series, she also donned a white variation of her signature red leotard outfit.
Personality
Inori Yuzuriha initially appears emotionless, speaking only when necessary and following Gai Tsutsugami’s orders with unwavering obedience. Created by GHQ as a vessel to contain Mana Ouma’s consciousness, she was awakened and named by Gai, to whom she shows deep respect and devotion. While she seldom expresses strong emotions, she is not entirely without opinions. For instance, when Shu Ouma begins to doubt himself, believing that no one would choose him over Gai, Inori firmly tells him to stop feeling sorry for himself. She later allows Shu to witness Gai’s vulnerabilities in an effort to help the two reconcile. Despite her quiet nature, she is a skilled fighter capable of killing enemies without hesitation, though she often gives them a warning beforehand.
Over time, after meeting and living with Shu, Inori gradually becomes more expressive. She starts smiling more often, displays embarrassment when getting too close to Shu, and becomes noticeably more attached to him. Initially, she tells Shu that she belongs to him because Gai instructed her to, but as their relationship deepens, her words become genuine. Even before openly acknowledging her feelings, she demonstrates concern for him, such as when Shu is captured by GHQ and she feels an unfamiliar sense of loneliness. She later admits to Tsugumi that it was the only time she had ever felt alone. Throughout the series, Inori struggles to understand her own emotions, to the extent that Gai has to explicitly tell her that she loves Shu before she fully realizes it. However, as she grows closer to him and others, she becomes more open and kind, developing meaningful relationships beyond her initial role in Funeral Parlor.
Inori has a strong passion for music. As the lead singer of the popular internet band Egoist, she often sings alone when no one is around. Shu frequently walks in on her while she is singing, highlighting how natural this act is for her. She also agrees to participate in Souta’s plan for an Egoist concert at the Tennozu Cultural Festival, stating that it sounds like fun. At one point, she even quotes the lyrics of one of her songs to comfort Shu, reinforcing her unwavering loyalty to him.
Loyalty is one of Inori’s defining traits. Initially, her devotion is directed toward Gai, as she refuses to leave Funeral Parlor even when Shu asks her to run away with him, explaining that Gai gave her a name and purpose. However, as her bond with Shu strengthens, her allegiance shifts entirely to him. Even when the students at Tokyo University of Law betray Shu, turning against him for his authoritarian leadership, Inori remains by his side. She fiercely protects him, fighting through a swarm of Endlaves and reassuring him that she will stand with him, even if the entire world opposes him.
Following Hare Menjou’s death, Inori begins displaying a darker side. She violently retaliates against a group of students who attempt to undress her, smiles maniacally before stabbing Arisa Kuhouin, and later injures a gang of thugs with unsettling ease. However, it is later revealed that these actions were influenced by Mana’s lingering consciousness within her, which had begun to manifest after the failed ritual to resurrect Mana. Upon learning the truth about her origins that she was created as a vessel for Mana—Inori starts questioning the authenticity of her feelings and identity. She fears that her emotions were never real and begins to see herself as a monster. Despite this internal struggle, she ultimately resolves that no matter what she was meant to be, she will always be herself, embracing her identity beyond the role she was originally designed for.
Background
Inori was created by GHQ as a vessel for Mana Ouma’s consciousness, designed to inherit Mana’s will if she could not be revived directly. However, Gai Tsutsugami rescued her and gave her a name, allowing her to develop a personality and a sense of individuality.
She was recruited into Funeral Parlor, where she served as a skilled operative, fighter, and loyal supporter of Gai. In addition to her combat capabilities, she was the lead singer of Egoist, an internet-based artist whose songs resonated with audiences. Her music often carried messages of hope, longing, and identity, mirroring her own journey of self-discovery throughout the series.
Abilities
As a member of Funeral Parlor, Inori Yuzuriha is highly skilled in combat, excelling in both hand-to-hand fighting and marksmanship. Her proficiency allows her to single-handedly overpower and eliminate multiple GHQ soldiers. Similar to Yuu, she possesses the ability to render a person unconscious with a single touch to their forehead.
Due to her status as a vessel for Mana Ouma, the patient zero of the Apocalypse Virus, Inori’s blood has the unique ability to delay the symptoms of those infected. Additionally, she can communicate with Mana through unknown means, possibly telepathy. Following Mana’s death and the transfer of her consciousness into Inori, she begins to exhibit violent tendencies influenced by Mana’s will. This is evident when she attacks Arisa Kuhouin, generating a crystal spike from her body to stab her. As time progresses, Inori’s connection with Mana strengthens, causing her to manifest more of Mana’s abilities, particularly when interacting with individuals whose Voids contain fragments of Mana.
In Episode 18, this transformation reaches its peak when Inori adopts a new form. Her hair grows longer and wilder, and several crystal spikes emerge from her back, waist, and arms, with two additional crystals forming on her cheeks. In this state, her physical abilities are significantly enhanced, allowing her to fight in a berserk-like manner. She utilizes the crystal spikes on her hands as blades, enabling her to destroy multiple Ghost Endlaves before being captured by Gai Tsutsugami, who is forced to use Yuu’s Void to subdue her by surprise.
Inori’s Void is the Singer’s Sword, a massive broadsword at least twice her height. It is considered one of the most powerful Voids in the series, capable of dealing devastating damage in combat.
Etymology
The name Inori (いのり) means “prayer” in Japanese, which matches her quiet and mysterious personality in the series. Her last name, Yuzuriha (楪), translates to “lacquered dish”, but it can also refer to the Yuzuriha tree, a plant that represents growth and new beginnings. This meaning connects to her role in the story, as she changes and develops over time.
