Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Ichigo Momomiya

Ichigo Momomiya (桃宮 いちご, Momomiya Ichigo) is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series Tokyo Mew Mew. She is the first member of the Mew Mews to be introduced and serves as the central heroine of the story. After an experimental incident, her DNA is merged with that of an Iriomote cat, granting her enhanced abilities and cat-like traits.

Appearance in Mew Mew Form

Ichigo is portrayed as a kind-hearted and energetic girl who readily takes on challenges that come her way. She is compassionate toward others and unafraid to confront bullies or defend those in need. At the same time, she is prone to being hot-headed and emotionally expressive, often struggling to hide her feelings.

Despite her bravery in most circumstances, Ichigo has an intense fear of ghosts. In one instance, Minto Aizawa was forced to drag her through a supposedly haunted school because she refused to move on her own. Ichigo is also deeply in love with Masaya Aoyama, frequently worrying about his opinion of her and experiencing anxiety over the possibility that he might discover her secret identity as a Mew Mew.

Her favorite foods include waffles with maple syrup, pizza, fish, dried bonito, and strawberries, while she strongly dislikes carrots.

In the English adaptation, Mew Mew Power, Ichigo’s characterization is adjusted, with her personality written as noticeably snarkier and less tactful compared to her original depiction.

Appearance

In her everyday life, Ichigo has shoulder-length strawberry-red hair, which she typically ties into pigtails secured with red ribbons. Around her neck, she wears a red ribbon with a bell, a gift from Masaya Aoyama. Her usual outfit is the St. Chronica Academy uniform, consisting of a black and light-gray sailor-style dress with a red ribbon, puffed white short sleeves with black and gray trim, and a light-gray bow at the back. Outside of school, she is often seen in casual attire, such as a yellow shirt and red shorts.

While working at Café Mew Mew, Ichigo wears a red dress paired with a white heart-shaped apron and accented with pink and white ribbons. Her look is completed with pink socks, black shoes with laces, and a lace headband in place of her usual pigtails, leaving her hair down.

When transformed as Mew Ichigo, her appearance changes dramatically: her hair and eyes shift to bright bubblegum pink, and her hair becomes wavier and loose. She also sprouts black cat ears and a tail, the latter tied with a dark pink ribbon and bell. Her outfit consists of a short light pink dress with matching arm garters, a leg garter on her right thigh, a dark pink choker with her Mew Pendant, and gloves and boots in dark pink trimmed with lace and jagged cuffs. Her distinctive Mew Mark, a pink version of her pendant’s imprint, appears on the inside of her right thigh.

Ichigo can also fully transform into a cat. In this form, she has black fur, pink paw pads, and pink-tinted ears. Her pink eyes remain, along with her tail ribbon from her Mew Mew form and the red ribbon choker from her civilian life.

In Tokyo Mew Mew New, Ichigo’s design retains the same base elements with modernized updates. Her Mew Pendant is replaced with a red ribbon featuring a pink heart-shaped gem, her gloves gain a white band with a pink gem, and her thigh garter includes an added ribbon. Her red hair is also styled to appear more feral and untamed in both her human and transformed states, emphasizing her connection to her feline DNA.

Abilities

As a Civilian
Even outside her transformed state, Ichigo demonstrates high levels of energy, agility, and endurance. She briefly joins her school’s rhythmic gymnastics team, where she improves her stamina, flexibility, and reflexes. Her Mew Mew traits sometimes manifest unconsciously in her civilian form, such as her ability to leap great distances or always land on her feet. Ichigo also shows basic hand-to-hand combat skills, which she combines with her acrobatic movements for an advantage in physical confrontations. Additionally, she is a competent swimmer.

As a Mew Mew
Ichigo is the designated leader of the Mew Mews, chosen after receiving her Mew Pendant from Ryou Shirogane. Her DNA was merged with that of an Iriomote cat, granting her cat-like powers and instincts. Her transformation phrase is “Mew Mew Strawberry, Metamorphose!” and her abilities are tied to love and emotion. When she is especially excited or embarrassed, she may partially transform, sprouting cat ears and a tail. In extreme cases, she involuntarily changes into a small black cat, and can only return to normal by kissing another human or animal.

Her feline traits give her enhanced agility, reflexes, and balance, along with the instinct to always land safely from falls. She is also portrayed with an unusual ability to sense or predict the weather, a reference to her animal DNA.

Transformation Sequence
Ichigo’s transformation into Mew Ichigo is the most elaborate among the five Mew Mews. It begins with her Mew Pendant glowing and releasing a rainbow light, followed by Ichigo curling into a ball as her DNA is shown morphing in the background. Pink energy and sparkles envelop her as her Mew uniform materializes piece by piece. Her tail, gloves, and cat ears appear in succession, and the sequence concludes with Ichigo striking her signature pose while a spiral of light flows into her pendant.

Etymology

Ichigo’s given name is written in hiragana (いちご), which by itself does not hold a specific meaning. However, when expressed in kanji, it can be interpreted in several ways. Possible readings include 一吾 (“one” and “I, me”), 一悟 (“one” and “enlightenment”), 一護 (“one” and “safeguard, protect”), 一期 (“a term” or “a lifetime”), and 一五 (“fifteen”). Another common form, 苺, directly translates to “strawberry,” which is thematically significant, as strawberries are both Ichigo’s favorite food and a recurring motif in her character design and transformation. Her surname, Momomiya (桃宮), is composed of the kanji for “peach” (桃, momo) and “shrine” or “palace” (宮, miya), giving her full name a light and whimsical quality that reflects her role as a cheerful magical girl.

Trivia

    • In the English adaptation Mew Mew Power, Ichigo (renamed Zoey Hanson) jokes that she is a poor dancer, claiming she once sent five people to the emergency room while attempting the Macarena.
      • Ichigo’s powers are based on the Iriomote cat (Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis), a critically endangered subspecies of leopard cat native to Iriomote Island. Fewer than 250 individuals remain in the wild, and although it was once classified as a separate species, mitochondrial DNA analysis in the 1990s reclassified it as a subspecies.
        • Among the original team, Ichigo was the only Mew Mew with her garter worn on the right leg. In Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode, the new protagonist Berry Shirayuki also wears her garter on the right, suggesting that its placement may symbolize the leader’s position.
          • Unlike the other Mew Mews, Ichigo’s attack and transformation phrases do not use her Mew name (Mew Ichigo) but instead incorporate the English word “strawberry.”
