Hotaru is described as a cute, fair-skinned teenage girl of average height, with a slender yet petite frame. At the start of the series, she has neck-length dark brown hair that eventually grows to shoulder length by Chapter 53, with her bangs swept to the left side of her face. She has large pinkish-brown eyes and moderately thick eyebrows.

In a flashback to her elementary school years, she is shown with longer hair that she often wore in a ponytail. However, due to a misunderstanding, a so-called friend cut her hair with scissors out of retaliation.

Personality

Hotaru is perceived as a quiet, shy, yet kind-hearted individual who cares deeply for her friends. When it comes to romance, she can be quite dense, as it’s something she has never really taken the time to think about or engage with. However, through her relationship with Saki Hananoi, she gradually begins to understand what it means to be with someone and to love someone.

History

Saki Hananoi

At first, Hotaru didn’t pay much attention to Saki until she happened to see him breaking up with a girl in a café. Later that day, she found him sitting alone on a bench in the falling snow, so she approached him and sheltered him with her umbrella. The next day at school, Saki walked into her classroom and asked her out, believing that her small act of kindness made her his soulmate. Hotaru declined, explaining that she didn’t understand love or romance, but Saki didn’t give up. He continued helping her around school, even adjusting his appearance to match her preferences. He also began having lunch with her, where they shared a pork meat bun.

When Hotaru lent her hairpins to a friend and one was lost during PE, Saki offered to help find it. Hotaru told him they should go home because it had started snowing, but he didn’t listen and remained at school searching in the freezing cold. While still looking for the hairpin, Saki called Hotaru to ask what it looked like. Realizing he was still outside in the snow, Hotaru rushed back to the school. She found him shivering and still searching. She begged him to stop, warning that he could die if he continued. Saki insisted he was fine and that her happiness was more important. Hotaru hugged him, then told him that her happiness shouldn’t be the only thing he values and that if he prioritizes only her well-being, she doesn’t want to fall in love at all. She brought him inside, where a teacher provided a heater and a blanket to warm him up.

The next day, Saki walked past Hotaru without saying anything, leaving her unsure whether he was upset. However, he later waited for her by the shoe lockers and returned her hairpin, explaining he had waited for the snow to melt to find it. Hotaru then returned his missing ear stud. Realizing she was beginning to fall for him, Hotaru asked if he was still willing to date her even though she still didn’t fully understand what love was. Overcome with joy, Saki hugged her, flustering Hotaru, who shyly returned the hug.
