Hinata Miyake

Hinata Miyake (三宅 日向, Miyake Hinata) is one of the main characters in the anime series A Place Further Than the Universe. Energetic, outspoken, and independent, she joins the expedition to Antarctica alongside Mari Tamaki, Shirase Kobuchizawa, and Yuzuki Shiraishi. Hinata brings a lively and optimistic presence to the group, often acting as the emotional glue that keeps them connected throughout their journey.

Mari Tamaki and Hinata Miyake sharing an amazed reaction

Hinata Miyake is a lively and upbeat individual who exudes energy and friendliness. Among the group, she is one of the most expressive and emotionally open, often seen with a bright smile and an optimistic attitude even in difficult situations such as losing her passport or being chased. She frequently keeps a positive front, even when hiding discomfort, such as during an unexpected encounter with her former high school track teammates.

During her time in high school, Hinata was treated unfairly by members of the track team. Though they outwardly encouraged her, they spoke negatively about her behind her back, an incident she overheard. This experience left her with lingering trust issues and a wariness toward people who act overly considerate, as it often makes her question their sincerity. This disillusionment contributed to her decision to leave high school early and pursue a more independent path.

In Episode 6, Hinata expresses this clearly, stating: “Shirase, I know you were trying to be considerate. I just really hate that kind of thing. I know that’s how relationships work, but when people try to be considerate of me it’s disconcerting, I guess; like I can’t tell how they really feel anymore. That’s why I couldn’t handle high school, and wanted to be alone as much as possible. At the end of the day, when I’m with someone else, things usually end up like this.”

Despite her emotional scars, Hinata often plays the role of the group’s moral compass. While she embraces a humorous and carefree personality, she is remarkably mature, street-smart, and insightful. She has a talent for delivering heartfelt words of encouragement and wisdom, often lifting her friends’ spirits and helping them navigate emotional challenges. Her optimism, though occasionally unrealistic as seen when she shrugs off losing her passport by cheerfully declaring that things will work out “somehow” is a key part of her charm.

Hinata also enjoys quirky hobbies, such as collecting Ganesha statues, owning a Ganesha plushie, and even using Ganesha as her phone wallpaper. She often adopts exaggerated expressions for comedic effect, especially when interacting with friends.

In group activities, Hinata frequently takes on the role of camera operator during their reporting assignments. This habit may have originated from her attempt to impress Tamiko Shiraishi before Tamiko’s daughter, Yuzuki Shiraishi, officially joined their group.

Appearance

Hinata is a teenage girl with long light brown hair, usually tied up in a prominent donut-shaped bun, with two shoulder-length bangs that frame her face. She has light purple eyes and is notably short in stature, making her the shortest among the group.

Her first appearance features her in a blue and white uniform from her part-time retail job. In casual settings, she often wears a green jacket with white sleeves, layered over a yellow shirt featuring playful prints such as onigiri, sandwiches, octopus, wieners, and fried shrimp. This outfit is paired with a red miniskirt and yellow, green, and black sneakers. Over the course of the series, she also wears a green variant skirt and, later, an orange jacket during the group’s journey to Antarctica. Hinata typically leaves her jackets unzipped.

She is among the most expressive members of the group, often seen with a bright smile, even during stressful or serious moments like losing her passport. She frequently makes exaggerated, comedic faces when interacting with her friends, adding humor and warmth to the group dynamic.

Background

Hinata was originally enrolled in high school, where she was recognized for her athletic talent, particularly as a sprinter. Despite being selected to run the women’s 200-meter race as a first-year student, a rare achievement her success sparked jealousy among older teammates. This led to behind-the-back gossip and social isolation, prompting her to leave school and continue her education through homeschooling.

While working a part-time job at a convenience store, Hinata overheard Shirase Kobuchizawa and Mari Tamaki loudly discussing their plans to travel to Antarctica. Intrigued and inspired by the idea of doing something bold and different, she approached them and soon became involved in their journey. Her inclusion in the expedition was ultimately secured when she helped persuade Yuzuki Shiraishi to join, thereby rounding out the group.

Hinata’s athletic ability is subtly highlighted early in the series. In Episode 2, during an impromptu attempt to crash a gathering of Antarctic expedition members in Shinjuku, she is shown to be faster than both Shirase and Mari. As the plan falls apart and the group is forced to flee, it is Hinata who suggests splitting up to avoid being caught, showcasing both her physical agility and quick thinking under pressure.

Etymology

The given name Hinata (日向) can be translated as “sunny place” or “in the sun,” reflecting warmth and brightness.

Her surname Miyake (三宅) is composed of the kanji 三 (mi), meaning “three,” and 宅 (yake or taku), meaning “home” or “residence.”
