Hime Onizuka (鬼塚 一愛, Onizuka Hime), commonly known by her nickname Himeko (ヒメコ), is one of the main characters in the manga and anime series Sket Dance, created by Kenta Shinohara. She is a core member of the Sket Dan, a high school club dedicated to helping students with their problems. Known for her strength and short temper, Himeko is a formidable fighter who wields a field hockey stick as her primary weapon, earning her the nickname “Onihime” (Demon Princess). Despite her rough exterior, she is deeply loyal to her friends and often acts as the emotional anchor of the group.

My hero was a TV character. With that ridiculous looking… red, horned cap on his head… dripping with sweat, he appeared before me. Even though I was a demon, that hero… came to rescue me

Hime Onizuka’s Appearance in Anime

Hime Onizuka was born and raised in Osaka, where she began playing field hockey in primary school and continued through junior high. At the age of fourteen, her family relocated to Tokyo due to her father’s job transfer. Struggling to adjust to her new environment, Hime initially felt alienated from her classmates and deliberately kept to herself. Upon joining the school’s field hockey team, she faced hostility from other players but befriended a classmate named Arisa, who helped her open up to others and regain confidence.

Hime’s friendship with Arisa took a dark turn when she witnessed Arisa associating with a group of delinquents led by a girl named Kyōko. Believing Arisa was being extorted, Hime confronted the group and endured a beating to protect her friend. However, she later discovered that Arisa had hired Kyōko’s gang as bodyguards to avoid bullying, pretending to be a victim to maintain her safety. Feeling betrayed and humiliated, Hime lashed out in anger, defeating the delinquents with her field hockey stick. The violent outburst earned her the notorious nickname “Onihime” (Demon Princess), and rumors of her strength spread throughout the region. Feared and isolated once more, Hime became a target for rival delinquents seeking to challenge her reputation, which she defended with ease.

Determined to escape her past, Hime applied to Kaimei High School—far from her old neighborhood—to live quietly without drawing attention. However, rumors of the “Onihime” reached even Kaimei. During a fitness test, her powerful throw caught the attention of her class representative, Chiaki, who encouraged her to join the softball team. Though initially reluctant, Hime slowly began forming new friendships with Chiaki and a classmate named Yūsuke, who noticed her carrying her old Popman cap from Osaka. Their persistence gradually broke down her emotional barriers.

When Chiaki was threatened by two men accusing her of damaging their car, Hime intervened to protect her friend, though her weapon broke in the process. Yūsuke’s timely arrival saved them from danger, allowing Hime to retaliate and defeat the attackers, who recognized her as the infamous Onihime. Expecting rejection after her identity was revealed, Hime prepared to return to solitude, but Chiaki and Yūsuke accepted her without hesitation. Yūsuke then invited her to form a campus support group with him, saying he needed her strength. Overwhelmed by their acceptance, Hime finally allowed herself to cry for the first time in years, marking the beginning of her new life at Kaimei High as a founding member of the Sket Dan.

Appearance

Hime Onizuka is a teenage girl with blue eyes and shoulder-length blonde hair that flips upward at the ends. She is almost always seen with a lollipop in her mouth, a personal trademark that earned her a tough reputation, as the stick was often mistaken for a cigarette during her delinquent days as “Onihime.” Her usual attire consists of the standard Kaimei High School uniform, a white shirt with a sailor-style collar, a red ribbon, and a blue skirt. She personalizes the outfit with a black choker, a thick studded bracelet on one wrist, and her Sket Dan wristband on the other. While she initially wears high heels, she later switches to pink sneakers for practicality.

Before adopting her current look, Hime had black hair styled similarly to Bossun’s, reflecting her more innocent past. During her time as the feared “Onihime,” she wore her hair longer, dyed blonde, and tied back in a ponytail, an appearance that became synonymous with her fierce reputation as one of Tokyo’s most formidable delinquents.

Personality

Hime Onizuka is known for her strong-willed, impulsive, and occasionally hot-tempered personality. Though naturally aggressive and quick to resort to physical solutions, she also demonstrates a sharp sense of humor and a caring disposition. Hime often strives to maintain a positive outlook similar to Bossun’s, though her temper sometimes undermines this effort. Her tendency toward violence is usually a result of frustration or impatience rather than cruelty, and her outbursts often mask a deep sense of loyalty and protectiveness toward her friends.

Despite her rough attitude, Himeko has a kind heart and a strong sense of justice. As a member of the Sket Dan, she is deeply committed to helping others and often takes her responsibilities more seriously than Bossun and Switch. She is impulsive, acting before thinking through situations, as seen during Enigman’s quiz challenge but her determination and courage often lead to successful outcomes.

Hime admires Bossun and shares a close, if occasionally combative, friendship with him. Although she frequently scolds or hits him in moments of irritation, her actions reflect both affection and gratitude for his influence in her life. She also displays a soft spot for small and cute things, revealing a nurturing and maternal side beneath her tough exterior. Originating from Osaka, Hime occasionally uses Kansai dialect expressions, which appear sporadically throughout her dialogue.

Special Abilities

Hime Onizuka possesses remarkable physical strength, easily wielding her field hockey stick as a weapon with precision and power. Her fighting ability and fearlessness in combat earned her the nickname “Onihime” (“Demon Princess”) during her delinquent years. She can incapacitate multiple opponents at once and displays both speed and endurance far beyond the average person, traits that make her one of the most formidable characters in Sket Dance.

In addition to her physical prowess, Himeko is also known for her sharp wit and quick verbal responses. Her “killer comebacks” often appear during her interactions with Bossun and Switch, providing much of the group’s comedic banter. However, her tendency to respond impulsively sometimes causes her to contradict herself or become flustered, as seen during the group date incident with Yabasawa and Seiji. Despite this, her humor and energy contribute significantly to the Sket Dan’s dynamic.

Relationships

Bossun (Yūsuke Fujisaki)
Himeko’s relationship with Bossun is one of the most central dynamics in Sket Dance. Though they are not romantically involved, their bond extends beyond simple friendship. Himeko admires Bossun’s leadership and feels both gratitude and loyalty toward him, often striving to be useful and dependable in his eyes. Despite her frequent teasing and violent outbursts toward him, it is strongly implied that she harbors romantic feelings for him, feelings she either denies or chooses not to acknowledge. This becomes evident when Switch invents a mind-reading device and Himeko becomes visibly nervous, mentally insisting she doesn’t like anyone while subconsciously thinking of Bossun. Their close partnership as comedic foils, with Himeko as the tsukkomi and Bossun as the boke, further highlights their inseparable chemistry. In supplemental sketches by Kenta Shinohara, it is hinted that the two eventually marry in the future.

Switch (Kazuyoshi Usui)
Himeko and Switch share a trusting and supportive friendship. Alongside Bossun, she helped save him during the Switch On arc, deepening their connection. Switch is aware of Himeko’s past as “Onihime,” and his technical expertise and observational nature allow him to understand her better than most. The two often join forces to tease Bossun, and their shared history with him forms the emotional core of the Sket Dan’s friendship.

Kiri Katō
Himeko sees aspects of her younger self in Kiri Katō and takes an active interest in helping him form friendships. She recognizes his strength and respects both his fighting ability and his reserved personality. Kiri, in turn, respects Himeko, particularly after learning about her past as “Onihime” and the strength she displayed in overcoming it.

Jin Kakiuchi
Jin develops a crush on Himeko upon meeting her and becomes fascinated by her personality and strength. After observing her interactions with Bossun, he realizes that her bond with him is too strong to interfere with, though he continues to express his admiration and vows not to give up on his feelings for her.
