Himawari Furutani (古谷 向日葵, Furutani Himawari), is a supporting character in the YuruYuri franchise, appearing in the main series YuruYuri as well as its spin-offs, including MiniYuri, Ōmuro-ke, and Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken. A student at Nanamori Middle School, Himawari is best known for her elegant demeanor, calm personality, and ongoing comedic rivalry with her classmate and fellow student council member Sakurako Ōmuro.
Despite their constant bickering, Himawari and Sakurako are frequently seen together, and their relationship plays a major comedic and emotional role throughout the series. Himawari’s mature personality, notable figure, and sharp tongue make her a fan favorite among the supporting cast.
Background

Appearance in anime
Himawari is a second-year student at Nanamori Middle School, serving on the Student Council alongside her classmate and constant rival, Sakurako Ōmuro. Though she often speaks in a composed and formal tone, she is easily provoked by Sakurako’s antics, resulting in frequent arguments that form a core comedic dynamic in the series.
Outside of school, Himawari is depicted as responsible and studious, often taking her duties seriously. She has a younger sister named Kaede Furutani, who appears in the Ōmuro-ke spin-off alongside Sakurako’s siblings.
Appearance
Himawari has long, dark purple hair worn in twin ponytails tied with light-colored ribbons, and dark violet eyes. Her appearance gives off an elegant and mature vibe that contrasts sharply with Sakurako’s more casual look. She wears the Nanamori school uniform, and her posture and expressions often reflect her calm, refined nature except during her many spats with Sakurako, during which she’s prone to exaggerated reactions.
Personality
Himawari is intelligent, composed, and often sarcastic, especially when dealing with Sakurako. While she generally tries to maintain a calm and collected image, her rivalry with Sakurako frequently exposes a more emotional, short-tempered side. Despite their arguments, she clearly cares about Sakurako, and their interactions are often interpreted as having romantic undertones.
Though not as outgoing as some of the main characters, Himawari’s wit, maturity, and subtle emotional depth make her a strong and memorable presence within the series. She is particularly popular for her tsundere-like behavior and her unexpectedly sharp comebacks.
Role in the Story
-
Comedic Rivalry
Himawari’s most consistent role in the series is as Sakurako Ōmuro’s rival. The two are nearly inseparable, yet they argue about everything from grades and chores to snacks and seating arrangements. Their squabbles add consistent comedy, but also subtly show their emotional reliance on each other. -
Student Council Support
As a member of the student council, Himawari plays a background role in school events and activities, helping to facilitate various events that involve the main cast. She occasionally takes on leadership tasks, showing her responsible side. -
Supporting in Spin-offs
In spin-offs like MiniYuri, Ōmuro-ke, and Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken, Himawari appears in side stories and comedic segments, often still paired with Sakurako. These appearances flesh out her home life and friendships while keeping her core personality intact.
Relationships
Sakurako Ōmuro
Himawari’s classmate, rival, and ambiguous love interest. Though they constantly argue and insult each other, their relationship is clearly a deep one, and they are rarely seen apart. Their dynamic is a central theme across all adaptations.
Kaede Furutani
Himawari’s younger sister, introduced more prominently in Ōmuro-ke. She is often more composed and cheerful, and adds another layer to Himawari’s responsible older sister persona.
Student Council Members
Himawari interacts with fellow council members like Ayano, Chitose, and Rise, though her most consistent dynamic remains with Sakurako.
