Helena

Helena (ヘレナ, Herena) was a noble Frenchwoman, born as a descendant of the legendary Joan of Arc. She was known as the former Maiden, carrying a lineage steeped in history and significance. Helena was not only the childhood friend and lover of Abel Bluefield but also the mother of Fena Houtman. Her complex relationships and her noble background are integral to the unfolding narrative, as her legacy and past continue to influence the events that shape her daughter’s journey.

Appearance in Anime

Helena was a stunningly beautiful, fair-skinned young woman with ankle-length platinum blonde hair, which was styled with square bangs that hung delicately over her forehead. Her striking big blue eyes and pink lips added to her allure, and these same traits were passed down to her daughter, Fena Houtman. Despite her nobility, Helena was often seen barefoot, though she was occasionally spotted wearing sandals in one particular scene.

In a portrait painted by Abel Bluefield, Helena is depicted wearing a white wedding dress, accompanied by a white veil and adorned with flowers wrapped around her neck, symbolizing the elegance and grace she embodied in life.

Personality

Helena was a kind, sweet, and cheerful young woman, known for her grace and warmth. She had a deep love for Abel Bluefield, which was central to her character. In the final moments of her life, Helena displayed remarkable calmness and serenity. Despite the circumstances, she reassured Abel that they would reunite in Eden, conveying a sense of peace and hope.

As a spirit, Helena’s love and affection remained strong. She tenderly stops Abel from fighting, embracing him to show that she still loves him, despite the mistakes he had made in the past. Her love for her daughter, Fena, is also unwavering. Helena encourages Fena to do her best, always supporting her with the same warmth and care that defined her life.

Background

Similar to her daughter Fena, Helena traveled to Eden and made her Choice, a pivotal moment that caused her to lose all her previous memories. As her role as the Maiden was fulfilled, Helena’s journey took her to England, where she was tasked with seducing the King of England to produce the next La Pucelle. The father of the next Maiden had to be a king, and so Helena’s mission brought her into the court of the King.

During her time in England, Helena met Abel Bluefield, the King’s illegitimate son. The two quickly became close friends, and their bond grew into something deeper as they developed feelings for each other. However, Helena’s role as the Maiden prevented her from fully embracing her love for Abel, as her destiny was tied to the mission at hand.

Eventually, Helena became pregnant with the King’s child, but in order to escape the dangerous situation, she fled with Franz Houtman, who pretended to be the King’s butler and assisted Helena in her escape. Together, they sought refuge in a safer country, possibly the Netherlands. After some time, Helena returned, only to be found by the King. She was imprisoned, her hair cut short, and she was condemned to be burned at the stake likely accused of treason or witchcraft.

Before her execution, Helena shared a final moment with Abel, telling him that they would meet again in Eden. Her soul later appears in Eden, offering comfort to Abel and helping him move on to the afterlife. She reassures her daughter, Fena, that her future is in her hands, and that she will do just fine.

In memory of Helena, Abel created an unfinished portrait of her, which hangs in his cabin. In the final episode, as Fena embarks on her journey to recover her lost memories, she encounters two children who bear a striking resemblance to Helena and Abel, perhaps symbolizing that the two lovers were given a second chance to be together, thanks to Fena’s choice.
