He is the best friend and combat partner of Quenser Barbotage, often joining him in battlefield operations despite frequent complaints and comic bickering. Heivia is of noble birth, fighting to secure his position as the heir to his family’s fortunes and political power. Appearance in Anime

Heivia Winchell hails from the prestigious and politically influential Winchell noble family and is the eldest son among many siblings. As part of his obligation to secure his inheritance and formalize an arranged engagement with a member of the equally powerful Vanderbilt family, Heivia joined the military to gain the required battlefield experience expected of an heir. Rather than enrolling in the elite officer training program, which would have granted him an automatic commission, Heivia opted for a six-month accelerated training course. As a result, he entered service with the rank of Private First Class.

He was assigned to the Legitimacy Kingdom’s 37th Mobile Maintenance Battalion, where he initially served as a radar analyst. However, following the Alaska Campaign and his involvement in the historic destruction of an Object alongside Quenser Barbotage, Heivia began participating more frequently in frontline combat. Though he originally intended to earn just enough merit to satisfy his family’s expectations, his career became far more active and dangerous than anticipated, taking him to battlefields around the globe.

Appearance

Heivia Winchell is depicted as a young man with spiky, swept-back brown hair and a distinctive wavy fringe that partially frames his exposed forehead. He has sharp blue eyes that reflect his often sarcastic and animated personality. He is typically seen wearing the standard blue military uniform of the Legitimacy Kingdom’s 37th Mobile Maintenance Battalion, which includes a tactical vest and utility gear suited for combat operations. His overall appearance aligns with that of a capable frontline soldier despite his noble origins.

Personality

Though born into nobility, Heivia Winchell is known for his brash, irreverent beheavior and is often regarded as a “delinquent soldier” among his peers. He regularly engages in sarcastic banter, frequently complains about assignments, and attempts to avoid danger whenever possible only to be pulled back into action through Quenser’s encouragement or sheer necessity. Despite this outward cowardice, Heivia is capable of maintaining composure under pressure and demonstrates strong coordination with Quenser in combat, making them an unexpectedly effective team.

Heivia often clashes with authority figures, particularly Major Froleytia, due to his insubordination and disorderly behavior. Nonetheless, he shows a consistent level of respect towards Milinda Brantini and occasionally displays moments of thoughtfulness that are typically misunderstood due to his blunt personality.

According to Quenser, Heivia is highly critical and pessimistic by nature, but this makes him a valuable voice of reason in high-risk situations. His ability to assess danger and act rationally contrasts with Quenser’s impulsive tendencies, which contributes to their strong partnership on the battlefield.

Skills and Abilities

As one of the few individuals in the Legitimacy Kingdom to receive traditional combat training in the era dominated by Objects, Heivia Winchell is a highly skilled front-line soldier. Proficient in the use of a wide array of military weapons, Heivia typically carries a .50 caliber handgun and a multi-attachment assault rifle equipped with various enhancements, including optical scopes, infrared cameras, a directional microphone, and both microwave and passive/active sensors. While the rifle is optimized for close- to mid-range engagements with rapid-fire and armor-piercing functionality, its suite of sensors enables accurate sniping at longer distances.

In addition to firearms, Heivia carries a military-grade knife, which he has shown the ability to throw with surprising precision. He is also equipped with an eighth-generation portable missile launcher, designed for versatility in targeting armored ground units, small maritime vessels, and low-flying aircraft.

Beyond his combat proficiency, Heivia has demonstrated exceptional tactical awareness, particularly in his role as a former radar analyst. He visualizes the battlefield as a strategic map, analyzing the movements of Objects to identify mechanical weaknesses or behavioral patterns. His expertise in reading enemy specifications and interpreting battlefield data makes him an invaluable asset in unconventional Object warfare.

Etymology

The surname Winchell is also associated with a cocktail composed of cognac brandy, gin, Cointreau, and lemon juice. This beverage is named after Walter Winchell, a prominent American journalist and radio commentator. While there is no direct confirmation that Heivia’s name is derived from the cocktail, it follows a recurring naming convention in Heavy Object, where characters’ names reference alcoholic drinks.

Trivia

    • Heivia, alongside Quenser, was part of the first team in history to successfully destroy an Object without relying on another Object or nuclear weaponry. This unprecedented feat earned them the media-given epithet “Dragon Killers” (ドラゴンキラー, Doragonkirā), symbolizing their ability to defeat seemingly invincible machines. However, the nickname is rarely brought up in the narrative.
      • Despite being born into nobility, Heivia consistently shows disdain for formalities and rarely uses his status to his advantage, preferring to act as a common soldier.
      • Heivia often serves as comic relief in contrast to Quenser’s analytical nature, though his battle instincts and marksmanship are top-tier.
      • He once expressed frustration over being part of so many dangerous missions, believing he enlisted only for quick, easy medals and a smooth return to noble life.
