Hatsuka Suzushiro (蘿蔔 ハツカ, Suzushiro Hatsuka), is a supporting character in the anime and manga series Call of the Night (Yofukashi no Uta). A vampire affiliated with Nico Hirata’s clique, Hatsuka is notable for his androgynous appearance and flirtatious charm. Although he is often mistaken for a woman due to his style and appearance, Hatsuka is in fact a man who simply prefers wearing women’s clothing, stating that he enjoys what suits him best.
As one of the more open-minded and emotionally perceptive vampires, Hatsuka plays a key supportive role in the story, particularly in Kou Yamori’s journey to become a vampire. His calm, elegant demeanor masks a sharp wit and deep understanding of the complexities of both love and the vampire condition.
Background

Appearance in anime
Hatsuka is one of the many vampires introduced after Kou Yamori begins to interact with the greater vampire society. Like Nico Hirata, Hatsuka belongs to a social group of vampires who are aware of the rules surrounding vampiric reproduction particularly the condition that a human must fall in love with a vampire in order to be turned.
Though Hatsuka lives with several human partners (all of whom are attracted to him and eager to become vampires), he takes a more philosophical and passive approach to turning others, believing that mutual emotional understanding should be at the heart of such a transformation. When he meets Kou, Hatsuka quickly becomes intrigued by his sincerity and unusual hybrid nature, and offers both advice and support throughout Kou’s transformation arc.
Appearance
Hatsuka is beautiful and feminine in appearance, with long, silky blonde hair, soft facial features, and a slender build. He typically wears stylish women’s clothing, such as dresses, skirts, or fashionable blouses, pairing them with accessories like chokers or earrings. His fashion sense and grace make him stand out among the other vampires.
Despite his femininity, Hatsuka makes no effort to hide his identity as a man. He exudes confidence in his choices and often uses his appearance to playfully disarm or confuse others, while remaining true to himself.
Personality
Hatsuka is mature, composed, and emotionally intelligent. He often acts as a mediator or voice of reason among the more chaotic personalities in the vampire circle. Though he has a flirtatious and teasing side, especially toward Kou, it’s clear that Hatsuka genuinely cares about emotional connections and is perceptive of the feelings of others.
Unlike many other vampires who are aggressive or manipulative when choosing humans to turn, Hatsuka is empathetic and encourages consent and emotional readiness. He takes a genuine interest in Kou’s unusual situation and supports Nazuna Nanakusa in her own complicated feelings toward Kou. Hatsuka is also aware of the toll that eternal life can take on one’s mental state, and values emotional clarity over instinct.
Role in the Story
-
Introduction and Kou’s Supporter
Hatsuka is introduced as a vampire admired by many, including a group of male followers who are deeply infatuated with him. He interacts with Kou after the latter’s run-ins with Nico and the rest of the vampire circle. Initially playful, Hatsuka takes a deeper interest in Kou’s honest desire to fall in love with Nazuna in order to be turned into a vampire. -
Guidance on Love and Transformation
Recognizing Kou’s emotional confusion and Nazuna’s fear of intimacy Hatsuka offers thoughtful advice and encouragement, subtly pushing both of them to confront their feelings. Hatsuka acts as a neutral observer and supporter, helping Kou understand what it means to love and to change, especially in a supernatural context. -
During Kou’s Hybrid Revelation
As Kou’s half-vampire nature emerges, Hatsuka continues to support his journey, observing with curiosity and compassion. Though not deeply involved in combat or conflict, he contributes by grounding the emotional stakes, providing Kou with reassurance that even vampires have questions and complexities.
Relationships
Kou Yamori
Though he teases Kou occasionally, Hatsuka truly respects Kou’s sincerity and supports him in his journey toward vampirism. He is one of the few vampires who doesn’t pressure Kou or treat him as an anomaly, and instead offers guidance with empathy.
Nazuna Nanakusa
Hatsuka understands Nazuna’s emotional blockages and supports her from a distance, hoping she will accept her feelings for Kou. Though their interactions are limited, he respects her independence and role in Kou’s growth.
Nico Hirata and the Vampire Clique
As part of Nico’s social circle, Hatsuka is considered a respected peer. He has his own lifestyle and boundaries, choosing to maintain an emotionally safe dynamic with his human companions, unlike others who treat humans more casually or possessively.
