Harumi Taniguchi (谷口 はるみ, Taniguchi Harumi) is the tritagonist of the manga and anime series Citrus. She is the younger sister of Mitsuko Taniguchi and the best friend and classmate of Yuzu Aihara at Aihara Academy. Known for her easygoing, fun-loving, and supportive personality, Harumi often serves as a source of emotional grounding and comic relief throughout the series.
Unlike many of the other students who are captivated by Mei Aihara’s serious and strict presence, Harumi remains unimpressed by school politics and prefers to live by her own carefree standards. Despite her lighthearted approach to life, she is deeply loyal to Yuzu and frequently offers her guidance, comfort, and a sense of normalcy amidst the emotional turmoil of Yuzu’s relationship with Mei.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Harumi Taniguchi is a kind-hearted, humorous, and easy-going girl with a grounded yet playful nature. She shares a similar mindset with Yuzu Aihara, often indulging in fun, harmless mischief and activities that skirt the boundaries of her school’s strict rules. She refers to herself as a “gyaru in disguise,” embracing a laid-back lifestyle while maintaining a subtle rebellious streak. Harumi has a keen sense of fashion, enjoys shopping, and brings an energetic, youthful charm to her interactions.
Despite her cheerful and outgoing exterior, Harumi is also mature, responsible, and emotionally intelligent. She tends to conceal her true feelings, especially when it comes to her family or those she cares about. She avoids causing conflict and is often empathetic and considerate, choosing to support her friends quietly rather than confronting situations head-on. According to Matsuri, this tendency stems from Harumi’s fear of being emotionally hurt, leading her to build emotional walls even while remaining deeply loyal and dependable to those close to her.
Appearance
Harumi Taniguchi is an attractive and tall young girl with a distinctive and stylish appearance. She has chest length plum-colored hair which appears as dark auburn in the anime usually styled in low twin pigtails with perfectly straight bangs that cover her forehead. She also has longer side bangs that frame her face and ears. On occasion, she changes her hairstyle by tying it into a low ponytail or wearing it loose. Her eyes are hazel, and she possesses a voluptuous figure, which she sometimes uses to conceal items banned by school regulations, such as makeup and her cellphone.
Much like her best friend Yuzu Aihara, Harumi has a strong sense of fashion and keeps up with the latest trends. When outside of school, she often wears trendy and sometimes revealing outfits that showcase her midriff, cleavage, or other features, expressing her individuality and casual rebellion against the school’s strict dress code. Her fashion-forward appearance complements her free-spirited and confident personality.
Relationships
Yuzu Aihara
Harumi Taniguchi quickly forms a close friendship with Yuzu Aihara, bonding over their shared interests and similar personalities. Harumi is often seen encouraging and supporting Yuzu, especially when she is upset or emotionally conflicted. She acts as a protective figure, frequently warning Yuzu about potential trouble particularly when it involves Matsuri Mizusawa or her own older sister, Mitsuko.
When Yuzu eventually confides in Harumi about her romantic feelings for Mei, Harumi offers her full support, respecting Yuzu’s emotions despite the complex nature of their relationship. Interestingly, Matsuri suggests that Harumi might have romantic feelings for Yuzu, which Harumi initially denies. However, her reactions such as awkwardly clarifying that she loves Yuzu “as a close friend” hint at deeper, unspoken emotions. Even after Yuzu commits to Mei, Harumi continues to stand by her as a loyal friend, possibly choosing to suppress any romantic feelings she may have. Matsuri frequently teases her about being too affectionate toward Yuzu, further suggesting that Harumi may be harboring a quiet crush, though she chooses not to act on it.
Mei Aihara
Unlike many of their classmates, Harumi is not infatuated with Mei, and this neutrality allows for a cordial relationship between the two. While not particularly close, Harumi and Mei are generally respectful toward one another. Initially, Harumi is unaware of Yuzu’s romantic feelings for Mei, and she does not fully grasp Mei’s emotional complexity or their evolving relationship. However, once she learns about their relationship, she offers her support without hesitation and even helps Mei indirectly, such as when she warns Yuzu about overexerting herself for Mei’s sake.
Matsuri Mizusawa
Harumi’s relationship with Matsuri begins on shaky ground. From the moment they meet, Harumi is suspicious of Matsuri’s intentions and hesitant to leave Yuzu alone with her. Matsuri, in contrast, takes an interest in Harumi, often teasing her playfully. Despite their clashing personalities, Matsuri observes that Harumi tends to stay on the sidelines, suggesting it stems from a fear of being emotionally hurt something Matsuri believes is masked by Harumi’s easygoing “gyaru” persona.
Over time, the two begin to develop a mutual understanding, growing into a more casual friendship. Though they often argue usually in a lighthearted, comedic way Harumi does show genuine concern for Matsuri, encouraging her to be more honest about her feelings and let her guard down when she’s troubled. Their dynamic evolves into one of reluctant yet meaningful support, marked by bickering, playful banter, and moments of sincerity.
Etymology
The given name Harumi (はるみ) is written in hiragana, which means it does not carry an explicit meaning through kanji in the series. However, if written in kanji, it could be interpreted in several ways:
Her surname, Taniguchi (谷口), consists of the kanji 谷 (tani), meaning “valley,” and 口 (kuchi or guchi), meaning “mouth” or “entrance.” Together, the name literally translates to “mouth of a valley,” evoking a sense of openness or a peaceful natural landscape—perhaps reflecting Harumi’s warm and approachable personality.
