Haruki Takehaya’s Appearance in Manga

In 2034, Haruki Takehaya was active in the Asakusa racing league, which served as his primary source of income. During this time, reports surfaced of fraudulent ticket dispensing. Haruki and a companion pursued three perpetrators; while one was apprehended, Haruki continued to chase the remaining two. Cornered against a fence, Haruki was nearly stabbed before Robin Inazaki intervened, incapacitating the attackers. Following this encounter, Robin criticized Haruki’s lack of combat readiness and entrusted him with a white jacket, which Haruki continued to wear five years later.

Determined to prove himself, Haruki later attempted to participate in a Hiruko extermination mission despite Robin’s disapproval. His inexperience earned him harsh reprimand for reckless behavior.

Soon after, while waiting for his sister’s race to begin, Haruki noticed a cloaked Hiruko near the track. Attempting to warn others, he instead confronted the creature directly. Although his weapon struck its target, the attack proved ineffective. Panicking, Haruki resorted to stabbing the Hiruko, but the man-eater absorbed his arm and began digesting him. He lost consciousness as Kiruko arrived, crashing a cart into the Hiruko and pulling Haruki free. Despite her efforts, Haruki had sustained catastrophic injuries, with his lower body consumed. He briefly heard his sister’s cries before succumbing to unconsciousness.

Haruki Takehaya is portrayed as a young adolescent boy with short, straight black hair and a slender build, reflecting his youth and involvement in racing activities. He typically wears a white jacket layered over a simple shirt and trousers. The jacket, given to him by Robin Inazaki following their first encounter, is both a practical garment and a symbolic reminder of the guidance he received. Five years later, Haruki continues to wear it, making the jacket his most recognizable feature. His overall appearance emphasizes both his inexperience and his determination to emulate the strength of his mentor.

Personality

Haruki Takehaya is characterized by his impulsive and reckless nature, often rushing into dangerous situations without fully considering the consequences. This tendency reflects both his youthful inexperience and his desire to prove himself capable in a hostile world. He demonstrates a strong emotional dependence on his sister, Kiriko Takehaya, with his attachment bordering on obsession. This fixation shapes many of his decisions, driving him to take risks beyond his ability and underscoring his struggle to balance personal feelings with survival.

Relationships

Kiriko Takehaya
Haruki shares a close but complex bond with his sister, Kiriko. His strong attachment to her often borders on possessiveness, influencing many of his decisions. His concern for her safety and approval drives much of his recklessness, and his devotion underscores his inability to separate personal feelings from survival instincts.

Although Robin criticizes Haruki’s lack of combat awareness, he entrusts him with his white jacket, which becomes a lasting symbol of their connection. Haruki admires Robin and attempts to emulate his strength, though his impulsive behavior often clashes with Robin’s warnings.

Skills and Abilities

Marksmanship
Haruki demonstrates notable dexterity with ranged weapons. Although inexperienced in large-scale combat, he is capable of handling firearms with confidence and accuracy. His reliance on ranged attacks reflects both his limited physical strength and his determination to contribute to Hiruko extermination efforts despite his inexperience.

Racing Proficiency

Etymology

The given name Haruki (春希) combines haru (春), meaning “spring,” with ki (希), meaning “hope.” Together, the name can be interpreted as “spring of hope,” symbolizing renewal or optimism.

The surname Takehaya (竹早) is formed from take (竹), meaning “bamboo,” and haya (早), which can mean “already,” “early,” or “fast.” Bamboo in Japanese culture often represents resilience and flexibility, qualities that contrast with Haruki’s impulsive personality but may reflect the potential expected of him.
