Haruka Tenou (Sailor Uranus)

Haruka Tenou (天王はるか, Tenou Haruka) is the civilian persona of Sailor Uranus (セーラーウラヌス, Seeraa Uranusu).

I am Sailor Uranus, the guardian of the sky and the wind. I’ll never let anyone stand in my way
— Sailor Uranus

Appearance

Civilian
Haruka is an older teenager with short, pale tan hair and dark blue eyes, standing as the tallest among the Sailor Senshi. Known for her androgynous style, Haruka typically wears masculine or unisex clothing, with rare instances of her in more traditionally feminine attire. Often mistaken for a boy, she rarely corrects others’ assumptions.

In her introductory episode, Haruka wears the boys’ winter uniform of Mugen Academy: a brown, formal suit jacket adorned with the school emblem, a white button-up shirt with a green necktie, green and black checkered pants, brown loafers, and white socks. Later in the episode, she is seen carrying her jacket, with her tie removed and her shirt slightly unbuttoned for a more relaxed look.

She also wears the boys’ summer uniform: a short-sleeved white button-up shirt with a pocket on the left side, along with her tie, school pants, and loafers from her winter uniform.

Haruka’s primary casual outfit throughout most of the series includes a light yellow formal jacket, a green short-sleeved undershirt, white pants with a brown belt, and brown leather shoes. She accessorizes with a golden cross necklace. In one episode, both her jacket and pants appear in a light green color with a black shirt. InSailor Stars, her outfit changes to a gold jacket and matching pants.

Sailor Uranus
In her Sailor Uranus form, Haruka keeps her civilian appearance with the addition of a gold tiara featuring a dark blue gem in the center. Her Sailor Senshi uniform includes a white leotard with dark blue as the dominant color, a yellow bow with a matching dark blue gem at the center, and a dark blue bow at the back. Her skirt, choker, and ankle-length boots are also dark blue, and her boots are designed with two belts. She wears a single hoop earring in her left ear.

Super Sailor Uranus
In her Super Sailor form, Haruka’s appearance aligns with the other Super Senshi. She gains a second hoop earring in her right ear, and her back bow extends in length. Her uniform also gains a single white line on each side, her bow’s gem becomes heart-shaped, and her choker features a gold star at the center.

Information

Sailor Moon R
While Haruka doesn’t make a full appearance in the second season, she appears briefly in silhouette alongside Sailor Neptune in the final episode, hinting at their roles in the upcoming third season.

Sailor Moon S
Haruka and Michiru make their official debut in Episode 92, where Haruka challenges Minako to a car racing game after beating Usagi. Both girls are immediately captivated by Haruka’s androgynous look and confident demeanor, and Haruka wins the game against Minako. Michiru soon joins her, surprising Usagi and Minako, who are unaware that the two have been discussing the recent threats facing their world. Later, when one of Haruka’s best mechanics becomes a target of Kaolinite’s Daimon, Haruka initially wants to intervene, but Michiru cautions her. The two pursue the Daimon on Haruka’s motorcycle and, as they leap into the air, they transform off-screen into Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. Together, they attack the Daimon with World Shaking and Deep Submerge, allowing Sailor Moon to finish it with Moon Spiral Heart Attack. Afterward, at the arcade, Minako realizes Haruka is female, leading to comic reactions from Rei and Makoto, who had been enamored with her. Michiru playfully reveals their identities, and Haruka humorously apologizes for the confusion, with Usagi claiming she “knew” the truth all along.

Sailor Moon SuperS
InSailor Moon SuperS, Haruka appears briefly in the second SuperS special with Michiru, as well as in the SuperS movie with both Michiru and Setsuna. During this season, she remains in her standard Sailor form instead of her upgraded Super Sailor form.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (Nehellenia Arc)
In the fifth season, Haruka and Michiru return to Azabu-Juban and are first seen together at an aquarium, where Michiru teases Haruka, leaving her momentarily speechless. As they leave, they notice “shooting stars,” and Haruka is grazed by a shard of glass. These shards transform into Mirror Paedri, prompting Haruka and Michiru to transform and fight. During the battle, they are astonished to see Sailor Pluto alive and caring for baby Hotaru, whom she has taken from Professor Tomoe. Hotaru, sensing the danger, strengthens the three of them, upgrading Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna into their Super Sailor forms.

In the following episode, Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna are shown living together and raising Hotaru, who affectionately calls Haruka “Haruka-papa.” The three are surprised by Hotaru’s growing precognitive abilities, which reveal an impending crisis that will threaten both the Earth and Moon. Haruka, eager to understand the full extent of the threat, encourages Hotaru to push her powers further.

When the Outer Senshi join the other Sailor Senshi to confront Nehellenia, they are split into separate arenas where Nehellenia taunts them. Sailor Uranus and Sailor Mercury find themselves paired together, and while Uranus attempts to defeat Nehellenia with brute strength, Mercury devises a strategic plan, allowing them to succeed. However, they are ultimately trapped in a mirror until they are later saved and able to participate in Nehellenia’s final defeat.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (Stars Arc)
During the second arc of the fifth season, Haruka becomes wary of the Three Lights, suspicious of their motives and origins, especially as Seiya begins spending time with Usagi. Their first confrontation occurs when Haruka invites Usagi to visit Michiru’s dressing room, only to find Seiya there, attempting to charm Haruka. Haruka promptly dismisses him, though Michiru playfully teases her afterward. Later, when Haruka’s car breaks down near Usagi’s house, she and Michiru join a gathering of the Sailor Senshi and the Three Lights. Tensions arise, with Haruka and Seiya locking eyes in a standoff, while Michiru and the Senshi poke fun at Haruka for her aversion to “popular men.”

As the situation intensifies, Haruka becomes increasingly resistant to the idea of the Sailor Lights and Sailor Senshi joining forces. She is protective of Earth, as are Michiru and Setsuna, and their priorities clash with the Sailor Lights’ mission. After Seiya is injured while protecting Usagi, Haruka and the others insist that Usagi should avoid him.

When Sailor Galaxia’s assault begins, Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna, and Hotaru confront her directly. However, they quickly realize their combined power isn’t enough to defeat her. Galaxia offers them an alternative: to join her and take on her bracelets. After a moment’s hesitation, Haruka agrees, deciding that as long as she is with Michiru, any consequence is worth it. Michiru joins her, and together they accept the bracelets, gaining power and defeating Setsuna and Hotaru. They follow Galaxia to confront Sailor Moon and the Sailor Lights, preparing for one final battle.

Trivia

    • In the anime, Haruka has two image songs: “I Want to Become the Wind” and “Initial U.”

    • Although fully devoted to Michiru, Haruka occasionally flirts with Usagi, particularly in the manga.

    • In the CWi English dub, Haruka’s name was changed to “Amara,” a name that sounds somewhat similar to Haruka. “Amara” can mean “bitter,” “unfading,” or “peaceful.”

    • In 1998, Irwin Toys released a series of Outer Sailor Senshi dolls before Sailor Moon S aired in North America. The packaging for Sailor Uranus dolls gave her the civilian name “Corinn,” meaning “maiden,” which contrasts with Haruka’s masculine presentation.

    • In the CWi English dub, Haruka and Michiru’s romantic relationship was famously altered, recasting them as cousins instead of lovers.
