Haruka Hasebe (長谷部 波瑠加, Hasebe Haruka) is a student of Class 1-D at Advanced Nurturing High School in the Classroom of the Elite series. Known for her laid-back and easygoing personality, Haruka is a member of the Ayanokōji Group, a close-knit circle of friends formed early in the school year. Though she initially appears carefree and indifferent to the school’s meritocratic structure, Haruka later reveals more depth, particularly in how she handles personal loss and emotional struggles.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Haruka Hasebe is generally a laid-back and introverted individual who prefers to keep a low profile and avoid unnecessary attention or conflict. This is evident early on when she chooses not to participate in class activities like the swimming session, preferring to keep to herself to avoid attracting trouble. Despite her seemingly relaxed attitude, Haruka is selective about whom she opens up to, often only engaging deeply with members of the Ayanokōji Group, her close circle of friends.
In the light novels, it is revealed that Haruka is self-conscious about her appearance, particularly her large bust, which draws unwanted attention from male classmates. As a result, she tends to avoid flirtatious boys and prefers companionship over superficial interactions. However, once comfortable with someone, Haruka becomes chatty and playful, often teasing those close to her. She has a habit of giving cute nicknames to her friends for instance, calling Kiyotaka Ayanokōji “Kiyopon” or “Ayanon”, which reflects her lighthearted and teasing nature.
While she enjoys teasing, Haruka is also capable of seriousness and emotional depth. In Volume 1 of the Second-Year Arc, she addressed Kiyotaka by his full name rather than his nickname, signaling a rare moment of emotional weight and sincerity. She is also shown to be a caring and attentive friend, particularly in her efforts to support Airi Sakura. Haruka encouraged Airi to be bolder in pursuing Kiyotaka’s attention, even suggesting she wear a revealing swimsuit like hers and confronting Kiyotaka directly to ask how he felt about Airi. She believed that love could help Airi grow as a person and was frustrated by Kiyotaka’s indifference toward her friend’s feelings.
After Airi’s expulsion in Volume 5 of the Second-Year Arc, Haruka was deeply affected and even nominated herself for expulsion, though the attempt failed. She withdrew from school for a week, returning with a newfound sense of resentment, particularly toward Kiyotaka and Suzune Horikita. She expressed a desire for revenge, claiming she wanted to see them fall as retribution for Airi’s departure.
Her grief and anger led her to a darker perspective, where she confessed that helping Airi may have been more about feeling superior to someone weaker than herself, rather than genuine empathy. When both Kiyotaka and Kikyō Kushida accused her of lacking real concern for Airi, Haruka admitted that there was some truth to their claims. She showed signs of a self-centered worldview, believing her own perceptions above all else. When she received a suspicious package, she claimed it was sent due to Airi’s hatred for Kiyotaka, refusing to accept alternate explanations from others like Akito Miyake.
Kushida later remarked that Haruka reminded her of her own family unable to make genuine friendships before entering the school. However, after learning about Airi’s past as an idol and recognizing the effort Airi had put into improving herself, Haruka experienced a turning point. Motivated by admiration and guilt, she resolved to work hard and graduate from Class A, so she could meet Airi again with pride and purpose.
Appearance
Haruka Hasebe is a teenage girl considered to be highly attractive by her classmates. She has waist-length blue hair with bangs parted on both sides of her face, and striking orange eyes, with a distinct beauty mark beneath her left eye. Her well-endowed figure and average height further contribute to her noticeable presence among the students.
Haruka is typically seen wearing the standard Advanced Nurturing High School uniform, though she adds her own casual touch to it. She keeps the upper button of her shirt undone and her tie loosely knotted, giving her a slightly relaxed and nonchalant appearance that reflects her easygoing personality.
Plot
Haruka Hasebe makes her first appearance during Class 1-D’s swimming session, where, unlike most of her classmates, she chooses not to participate. Instead, she quietly sits in the bleachers, watching from the sidelines, reinforcing her tendency to keep a low profile and avoid unnecessary attention.
Following this, Haruka is often seen in the classroom, usually either working on assignments or sitting idly, rarely taking initiative in class activities. Despite her laid-back attitude, she gradually becomes a more visible presence within the class, particularly as a member of the Ayanokōji Group, where she begins to form deeper bonds with a few classmates.
During the special survival test on the uninhabited island, Haruka plays a more active role. After the theft of Kei Karuizawa’s underwear, which stirred suspicion and tension among the students, Haruka is among the female students who supported the idea of separating the boys from the girls. Her concern highlights her protectiveness toward her peers, especially in situations that compromise the safety or dignity of others.
Abilities
Academic Abilities
Haruka Hasebe possesses above-average academic ability, particularly excelling in Science and achieving relatively high scores in Mathematics. However, she struggles in subjects like World History and Language, where her performance tends to be weaker. Despite this, Haruka is capable of dedicated studying when necessary, allowing her to avoid failure in her weaker subjects.
Her academic performance has been noted to be remarkably similar to that of her close friend, Akito Miyake. In fact, Kiyotaka Ayanokōji once remarked that their test answers were so alike that it almost appeared as though a single person had completed both exams, highlighting not only their comparable academic level but also their close study habits and shared approach to exams.
